My Daily Blog 2026#190

[ENG] Yesterday was my last day off, so I naturally took advantage of the free time to get some fresh air and activity. With the heat baking everything, the only thing that crossed my mind was to go for a spin in the woods between Ghlin and Nimy. It's just a small pocket of the Bois de Baudour, but it was more than enough for a fantastic ride.

[ENG] The trip gave me a perfect chance to compare Polish and Belgian forests. Just last week, while riding through the Masurian wilderness, I told my wife that Polish forests are far more beautiful. You can really feel the sense of open space there, and unlike Belgian woods, they are free of dense undergrowth. In Belgium, stepping off the beaten path instantly means hacking your way through thick bushes. In Poland, on the other hand, wandering off-trail, strolling easily between the trees, and foraging for mushrooms is just a normal part of life.

[ENG] This particular forest threw a bit of an obstacle course at me in the form of fallen trees. The larger trunks had usually been cleared, but the smaller ones required me to dismount and carry my bike over, though occasionally I could find a narrow, beaten-down alternative trail. Deep in the woods, I stumbled upon a fascinating sculpture carved directly into the stump of a broken tree. The piece, titled "Bois brûlé," was created by Félix Mahieu. Back home, I checked out his portfolio on his Facebook profile, and some of his chainsaw sculptures are absolutely spectacular.
