Harrisville State Park: A perfect way to end the summer!

Even if we had known this was going to be our last camping trip of the year, I don't think we could have planned it any better. The fact is, we weren't even supposed to be in Harrisville on this weekend. We had plans to camp at another campground a bit further south, but still right on the shores of Lake Huron.

The way the Michigan State Parks reservation site works is you can book your camping dates no more than six months in advance. That means we have to plan ahead and book most of our trips back in November - January of the previous year. The way camping has exploded since Covid hit, if you don't book that early, you likely won't get any trips in.

IMG20230817155328.jpg

What ended up happening this year is the friends we had booked our trip to camp with six months ago, didn't realize that their kids were going to be involved in marching band and football. When the weekend rolled around that we were supposed to go camping, they realized they were booked solid, so they had to cancel.

@mrsbozz figured, why go to the place we were going to go if we were just going to be there alone, so she immediately started looking for openings at other campgrounds that might be more appealing. It was total luck that someone canceled this site in Harrisville last minute and we were able to snatch it up and have probably one of our best trips of the summer.

IMG20230817171546.jpg

Harrisville State Park is probably one of our most favorite parks in the state of Michigan to camp at. If you are lucky enough to get one of the sites right along the beach, it is pretty amazing as you will see from my pictures.

We pulled in on Thursday afternoon just ahead of some storms that were heading our way. In fact, as you will see, our first night was a bit of a bust and we ended up going inside and watching TV while the rain pounded down around us outside.

IMG20230817170827.jpg

I had just finished grilling some burgers when the rain started coming down. You can see it pouring off the edge of our awning in the photo above. We quickly realized a fire was going to be out of the question, so after sitting under the awning for a while and watching the rain come down, we eventually decided to call it an early night.

Luckily, the ground was pretty dry, so the rain soaked in right away and we had zero issues with mud or puddles the rest of the weekend. In fact, the weather was near perfect the rest of the weekend for us.

IMG20230818083033.jpg

Harrisville is on the "sunrise side" of Michigan. That means on any given morning you can be greeted with a sunrise like this. I decided to cook up some pancakes on the Blackstone and snap a few pictures of what might possibly be heaven.

I'll let you be the judge. You sure can't beat that view can you?

IMG20230818144557.jpg

It was quite amazing just how blue the sky was the rest of our weekend and the contrast of how green the leaves were on the trees was just amazing. I love taking photos like this where you can see the stark difference in the colors. I'm not going to lie, I might have dozed off a time or two the afternoon I took these photos listening to the waves crash along the beach.

IMG20230818144633.jpg

I even took a selfie or two. You might notice I actually had a jacket on for this photo. The wind coming off the lake was pretty chilly and despite the sun being out, I needed to have the jacket on to keep me warm.

I'm not a fan of hot weather (like we are getting right now), so I kind of prefer it the way it was in the photo above.

IMG20230818150421.jpg

As I was sitting there, I noticed a bit in the distance over on the next site there were some wildflowers growing. We didn't have neighbors at the time, so I quickly ran over and started to snap some photos with my smartphone.

IMG20230818150429.jpg

IMG20230818150442.jpg

I think they turned out pretty cool. It probably would have been better earlier in the season when the blooms were open, but despite that, it was still rather pretty. The fact that you could just see the colors still hanging on was kind of cool. I said wildflowers, but I know most of these were probably actually weeds. That didn't make them any less pretty to look at though.

IMG20230818155039.jpg

In the evening, @mrsbozz and I would move our chairs down to the rocky beach area and take a couple of adult beverages with us to have our own private happy hour before dinner time. It was so relaxing. As you will see from the photos, there was a bit of a wind, so the waves were crashing quite nicely on the rocks.

It was actually a fine line between being totally relaxed and sensory overload if that makes sense.

IMG20230818155218.jpg

I took well over 100 photos on this trip that I am likely going to be sharing here and there in various posts through the rest of the year. The fact is, they all turned out really great and I am proud of them. Then again, when you have a backdrop like that, it's hard not to take a good picture! Am I right?!

IMG20230818161442.jpg

This is another picture of the flowers/weeds, and our neighbors two sites over who put their picnic table up on the bluff so they could sit and enjoy the view while having coffee or a meal.

IMG20230819155400.jpg

There were downed trees around our area of the beach that almost made it feel like we had our own private alcove. Eventually some rock hounds would come wandering onto our section of the beach, look around, and then move along to another area.

If you look really closely, you can see a sandy path out into the water in the photo above. I thought about taking a swim one of the days, but I never got around to it. Like swimming in the ocean, there is something special about swimming in one of the great lakes. It's unlike any other body of water.

IMG20230819155724.jpg

IMG20230819160315.jpg

I even tried my hand at some rock stacking and perspective shots. In case you wondered, @mrsbozz is a much better rock stacker than I am! Which doesn't surprise me, because I am more about stacking crypto anyway!

IMG20230819171418.jpg

IMG20230819201022.jpg

Words can't begin to express how amazing of a trip this was. We normally do some fall camping too, but with the health of our dog Jovi deteriorating, our nieces and nephews all in falls sports, and the fact that we are taking a big trip for our anniversary in a month or so, we decided to skip any fall camping trips this year.

As I said, we didn't know at the time this would be our last camping vacation of the year, but looking back now, I can't think of a better way to send off summer.

That looks a great way to wrap up the summer camping. I also am not so keen on very hot weather and prefer 25° max. Good to hear you managed to eat well and out the grill to test too.

Yeah, I am definitely not a hot weather kind of guy. It just makes me sick to my stomach most of the time. This trip was amazing. I have a couple more food posts to share from this trip and then I think I am all caught up!

Thanks, I appreciate that! It was pretty amazing. We had a site down in this area once before, but it was when the weather was much colder and it was hard to enjoy it.

Great photos. Lake Huron is the best. Or a very close second to Lake Superior….

Cleanest water in the World.

Indeed! You really can't beat it. I love the northern shoreline of Lake Huron. Even the Saginaw Bay is nice if you don't mind all the people and stuff.

We did the lake superior circle tour when I was a kid, but we never went that far east. At least not while we were that far north. We did travel out to New England, but that was a different trip.

For sure! I'm heading to Vermont in about a month here. I'd like to get up to Nova Scotia one day. My friend goes to Drummond Island each year for the Jeep thing, but I have never been there.

Thanks, I appreciate it. Unfortunately, it's just the effects of age. I don't expect she will ever be back to 100%.

Having a beach beside the park is actually cool and I guess that is why you love it more
Am I right?

Yeah, this park is pretty awesome like that. We have several right along the water, but this is one of the only ones that actually has sites right on the water.

That is a great camping spot! We don't get to that side of the state that often. We always end up on the Lake Michigan side since we have the cabin. I like the rockier shores my wife would love to pick through them.

Oh, this place has no shortage of rocks! There was a brewery right up the road too. We didn't visit it, we drove up to Alpena one day for lunch.

That is such a beautiful park to spend time in! I'm so sad that the summer is over and haven't been camping at least once this year. But the freedom and silence your pictures are sharing, makes me get motivated to not let this happen anymore 🙏🏻

I totally understand. We are a bit bummed that this was our last trip of the year. We usually have one or two more to look forward to at this point. I guess we just need to make up for it next year!

I will probably never understand love of camping, but it's so popular that there must be something to it that I just don't see 🙂

Could you go for a swim too? I see that your wife has a hoodie on a photo, so it looks like it was quite cold?

Have a great day!

It was pretty chilly when you were down by the water. That wind was coming out of the northeast, so it was giving us goose bumps for sure! I could have walked right out and went swimming if I had wanted to yes. My wife and I grew up camping, so we have always had a love for it. I can see how you might not if you aren't familiar with it. I just like being out in nature and exploring new places. Plus the views are amazing!

You sir are living the life. I should take a page from your book, and start planning my getaways like months in advance. Book it and pay for it that way i’ve got no other choice but to unwind and relax. I always put myself in a position where work comes first and play comes later. Due to that the vacations dont really materialize anymore, there’s always something that comes up which takes top priority. I gotta switch things around.

You do, we are the same way. The fact that my wife gets summers off makes it more of a priority for us. If that wasn't the case, we probably wouldn't go like we do. Heck, we got married in October and since we both work for a public school district we didn't take a honeymoon so we could be back for the beginning of the year. I had a cancerous tumor removed on a Friday and was back to work by Monday one year. That's just not right... If you wait too long, you won't be able to enjoy it!

Your photos capture the magic of Harrisville State Park beautifully! It's amazing how last-minute changes led to such a memorable trip. The wildflowers (or weeds!) add a charming touch. Wishing Jovi all the best. Cherishing these moments is a perfect way to bid farewell to summer. 🏕️🌅

Yeah, this is one of our favorites for good reason! Jo is just getting old. She can't move around like she used to. She has lost a lot of muscle mass in her back legs and she has nerve damage back there. At 14 years old I fear she isn't going to be around to make us smile much longer.

I'm really sorry to hear that Jo is going through this difficult time. It must be tough for both of you to see her struggle. It's clear she's been a beloved part of your life. Cherish the moments you have with her and make her as comfortable as possible. Sending you and Jo lots of love and positive thoughts during this time.

Thanks, I appreciate that. She is a pretty stubborn thing, so she could be with us for longer than we expect. She's on two different meds and still has a lot of trouble getting around though.

Thanks! It was really awesome. We have been close to the water here before, but never quite this close. After that first night of rain the weather was perfect too.
