| Covering my hometown for a change. Because my laptop broke down completely, only a couple of days after I arrived here in Trivandrum, & I haven't yet been able to recover the files on the harddrive, I'm a bit limited in my choice of topics for now. But because I used my compact camera to take photos of Gladbach & had not yet uploaded them to my laptop, that gives me the opportunity to introduce my hometown to you. | Zur Ausnahme geht es mal um meine Heimatstadt. Da mein Laptop kurz nach meiner Ankunft in Trivandrum den Geist aufgab & ich noch nicht dazu gekommen bin, die Daten auf der Festplatte zu retten, ist meine Auswahl an Themen etwas eingeschränkt. Da ich aber mit meiner Kompaktkamera in Gladbach einige Bilder machte & diese noch nicht von dieser gelöscht hatte, kann ich immerhin mal meine Heimatstadt vorstellen. |

| In the past I had not taken a lot of pictures in Gladbach. Having grown up there, I didn't find anything much remarkable. After spending a lot of time abroad, photographing interesting features there & introducing them on Hive, during my last visit in my hometown I noticed that there are some nice features as well. So, here is the Basilica of St. Vitus. | Habe früher nicht viele Fotos in Gladbach aufgenommen. Fand nicht viel Bemerkenswertes dort, da ich dort aufwuchs. Nach langer Zeit im Ausland, wo ich Interessantes fotografierte & auf Hive vorstellte, fiel mir bei meinem letzten Heimatbesuch auf, daß es da doch auch einiges Nettes gibt. Also zeige ich heute das Münster St. Vitus. |

| Being one of the first buildings ever erected there, it is right in the heart of town. The basilica is located on a hill above the Geroweiher (~ Gero's Pond), which you can see above. As is common in Gladbach, there is some construction work going on around it. Now they seemingly want to enlarge the pond. | Als eines der ersten dort errichteten Gebäude ist es genau im Herzen der Stadt. Es befindet sich auf einem Hügel über dem Geroweiher, den man oben sieht. Wie üblich in Gladbach wird dort mal wieder gebaut. Diesmal will man anscheinend den Weiher vergrößern. |

| The basilica was built in the spot where there were 2 other churches before. The first ever was probably erected by a Frankian nobleman called Balderich at the beginning of the 9th century. It is said to have been destroyed by the 'Huns' (or 'Magyars') in 954. 20 years later, archbishop Gero of Cologne decided to build a monastery in the same place, which included a new church. Parts of this building were used until the 12th century. | Das Münster entstand dort, wo es vorher schon 2 andere Kirchen gab. Die erste wurde vermutlich von einem fränkischen Adligen namens Balderich am Anfang des 9. Jahrhunderts gebaut. Diese wurde wohl von den 'Hunnen' (Ungarn) 954 zerstört. 20 Jahre später entschied Erzbischof Gero von Köln, an gleicher Stelle ein Kloster mit einer neuen Kirche zu errichten. | Already in the 11th century, though, they started rebuilding the church. From this time we have the oldest surviving parts in Romanesque style, particularly the crypt. (I was in it once as a child. One sarcophagus there has a large crack. The guide told us, that according to legend, the devil lost a game of dice there & in anger banged on the sarcophagus, which caused the crack.) Even before the new church was finished, they rebuilt it again in the 12th & 13th centuries. From this time there is a lot of stuff in Gothic style. | Schon im 11. Jh. fing man jedoch mit einem Neubau an. Aus dieser Zeit stammen die ältesten erhaltenen Teile in romanischem Stil, insbesondere die Krypta. (War als Kind mal drin. Ein Sarkophag hatte einen großen Riss. Der Führer erzählte uns, daß laut Legende der Teufel dort ein Würfelspiel verlor & vor Wut auf den Sarkophag schlug, wodurch es zum Riss kam.) Noch bevor die neue Kirche fertig war, kam es im 12. &13. Jh. zu neuerlichen Umbauten. Aus dieser Zeit stammt einiges in gotischem Stil. |

Construction continued at least until the 15th century. & in the 17th & 18th century parts of the church were converted to Baroque style. | Säulenverzierungen am Haupteingang. | Directly beside the basilica is part of the former monastery. During Napoleon's reign, in 1802, the monastery was dismantled. Since 1835 parts of it became the townhall of Mönchengladbach. | Direkt neben dem Münster ist ein Teil des früheren Klosters. Unter Napoleon wurde es im Jahr 1802 verstaatlicht. Seit 1835 sind Teile davon das Gladbacher Rathaus. |

| The entrance as seen from the inside. Particularly interesting for me is the nice ceiling construction. Must have been quite some work. & that's it with the Mönchengladbach Basilica. Since I have some more photos of older buildings in the city, there will be at least one more post about my hometown. But for now, just a few more pics: | Der Eingang von innen gesehen. Besonders interessant für mich ist die Deckenkonstruktion. War vermutlich nicht einfach zu bauen. & das war's auch schon zum Gladbacher Münster. WOW the building is from 1892, it's so beautiful. People must have done a great job to maintain its orginal beauty.
Well, originally the church is more than 900 years old. Only that the 2nd World War destroyed much of it. Most of what you see from outside is just some 70 years old.

I didn´t know you are from Germany. I know Monchengladbach mostly because of Borussia, I used to bet on Bundesliga quite a lot when I was a teenager (long time ago) :D You have some impressive architecture over there!

Yeah, Borussia is the major attraction of Gladbach. But, as I noticed, there are other interesting things in the city as well. Could be more, had there not been that moronic war.
