Gyalthang - Day 2 - Walks / 2. Tag - Spaziergänge

My procrastination got a boost recently, because shoulder pain hindered any prolonged time at the computer. Which is of course a good excuse not to write longer articles. Sadly, or luckily, the pain is subsiding. Let's see whether I get through this without too much of it. Today I wanted to write about days 2 & 3, but in preparation it seemed a bit too much, so I split it. Therefore this post is only about walking around the 'old town' of Gyalthang on the 2nd day there. Day 1 can be found here & here's the Golden Temple.Meine Aufschieberitis bekam zuletzt etwas Auftrieb, da Schulterschmerzen mich daran hinderten, zu lange am Computer zu arbeiten. Was natürlich eine tolle Ausrede ist. Leider, oder zum Glück, läßt der Schmerz langsam nach. Mal sehen, ob ich die Schreiberei durchstehe. Wollte eigentlich über Spaziergänge am 2. & 3. Tag schreiben, aber dafür war es doch etwas zuviel Material. Also habe ich es aufgeteilt & in diesen Beitrag nur die Besichtigung der 'Altstadt' Gyalthangs am 2. Tag gepackt. Der 1. Tag findet sich hier & der Goldene Tempel ist hier.

The 'old town' surrounds the Golden Temple, & Chinese websites like to call it "Dukezong Ancient City", but it is neither very old nor ancient. Much of it had been built in the 90's. Worse, in 2014 a large fire destroyed most of it. So, if you visit it now, most of what you see is probably newer than your home.Die 'Altstadt' umgibt den Goldenen Tempel & wird von chinesischen Webseiten gerne mal "Antike Stadt Dukezong" genannt. Ist aber weder sehr alt, noch antik. Der Großteil wurde erst in den 90ern gebaut. Schlimmer noch, 2014 brannte die 'Altstadt' weitgehend ab. Wer sie also heutzutage besucht, lebt vermutlich in einer Wohnung, die älter ist.

We visited in 2008, hence we could see the slightly older buildings. Even though they were not what they seemed to be, the architecture is still interesting, at least to someone like me, who had never been to Tibet before (or after).Wir waren 2008 da, weshalb wir noch die etwas älteren Gebäude sehen konnten. Auch wenn sie nicht das waren, was angepriesen wurde, so ist die Architektur dennoch interessant, zumindest für jemanden wie mich, der zuvor (oder auch danach) nie in Tibet war.

Of course, this being the PRC, there has to be propaganda. In this case it shows Mao, Deng, Jiang & Hu with the slogan: "Unity & struggle together for common prosperity & development". Note how it hasn't changed much under emperor Xi?Natürlich muß es auch Propaganda geben. Man ist ja in der VRC. Hier sieht man Mao, Deng, Jiang & Hu mit dem Slogan: "Einigkeit im gemeinsamen Ringen um allgemeinen Wohlstand & Entwicklung". Man beachte, wie wenig sich unter Kaiser Xi geändert hat.

The streets in the 'old town' are essentially souvenir shopping streets, similar to Lijiang or Dali, but - at least in 2008 - on a smaller scale & less overrun by tourists. The shops are usually run by Han Chinese who rented the buildings from locals who then moved into more 'modern' parts of town.Die Straßen der 'Altstadt' sind im Endeffekt Souvenir-Einkaufsstraßen, ähnlich Lijiang oder Dali, aber - zumindest 2008 - in kleinerem Ausmaß & mit weniger Touristen. Die Geschäfte gehören meist Han-Chinesen, die die Gebäude von den ursprünglichen Bewohnern (die dann in modernere Gebäude zogen) mieteten.

I particularly like this architectural style, with the huge wooden pillars.Sehr interessanter Gebäudestil. Diese massiven Holzsäulen haben was.

A slightly less commercialised street. Note the Chinese signs & lack of Tibetan writing, although shop owners are (for what I know) required to have Tibetan signs as well.Eine nicht gar so kommerzialisierte Straße. Die Schilder sind ausschließlich auf Chinesisch, obwohl - soweit ich weiß - die Läden verpflichtet sind, auch Tibetisch zu verwenden.

In some cases, as seen above, the bricks indicate older buildings, from poorer times, but the wooden structures appear to be of a more recent origin.In einigen Fällen scheinen die Ziegelsteine auf ältere Gebäude zu deuten, aus ärmeren Zeiten, aber die Holzkonstruktion erscheint deutlich jünger.

Not sure about these 2 above, the brickwork is either old or of poor quality. The wooden structures don't look that great, either. Hard to say how old this stuff is, but definitely interesting constructions.Bei den beiden obigen Gebäuden bin ich mir nicht sicher. Die Ziegel sind entweder alt oder schlecht. Die Holzkonstruktion erscheint auch nicht toll. Schwer zu sagen, wie alt die sind, aber auf jeden Fall interessant.

This one is of a much higher quality. Looks fairly new, but also very nice. I like the woodwork.Dieses ist von deutlich besserer Qualität. Sieht recht neu aus, aber doch sehr nett. Mir gefallen die Holzarbeiten.

More 'ancient' buildings in the making. Even before the fire there was a lot of construction work going on in Gyalthang. The Golden Temple also got some additions since then. & everything is 'ancient'.Weitere 'antike' Häuser in der Mache. Selbst vor dem großen Brand wurde schon viel gebaut in Gyalthang. Auch der Goldene Tempel bekam zusätzliche Gebäude. & alles ist 'antik'.

From the hill on which the Golden Temple stands, you have a nice overview in all directions. Beyond the 'old town', you can see a very normal, very Chinese town.Vom Hügel des Goldenen Tempels hat man einen schönen Ausblick über die Umgebung. Jenseits der 'Altstadt' sieht man eine sehr normale, sehr chinesische Stadt.

Even if you're not interested in architecture, the landscape alone validates a trip to Gyalthang. But, as I said, there has been a lot of development since 2008. No idea how much green you can still see nowadays.Auch wenn man nicht an der Architektur interessiert ist, lohnt allein die tolle Landschaft eine Reise nach Gyalthang. Aber, wie gesagt, es wurde viel gebaut seit 2008. Weiß nicht, wieviel Grün man heute noch sehen kann.

More ancient buildings under construction. The building in front makes me think, that in some cases they re-use old bricks to make new buildings look more authentic.Weitere antike Häuser im Bau. Das vordere läßt mich vermuten, daß in einigen Fällen alte Ziegelsteine verwendet werden, um die Gebäude authentischer erscheinen zu lassen.

No matter how old or new, the woodwork is just nice.Egal wie alt oder neu, die Holzkonstruktion hat was für sich.

In the evenings, people come together for very Chinese public dancing. Unlike in all the other places in China I've been to, in Gyalthang, a lot more people come to together for one big circle dance. But a bit more about this in my next Gyalthang post.Allabendlich kommt man zusammen, um ganz chinesisch auf Plätzen zu tanzen. Anders als sonstwo in China, ist es aber in Gyalthang eine größere Menge, die gemeinsam im Kreis tanzt. Dazu aber etwas mehr im nächsten Gyalthang-Beitrag.

Just like all over China you also find some nice Chinglish in Gyalthang. &, also like all over China, food hygiene is not necessarily the highest priority:Ganz wie überall in China findet sich auch in Gyalthang interessantes Chinglish. & auch wie überall in China genießt Lebensmittelhygiene keine Priorität:

To me, walking around is way more interesting than visiting some pseudo-ancient temple, even if it is a town that is also just pseudo-ancient. If you visit Gyalthang (if that ever becomes possible again), that's what you should do. Just don't get distracted by all those souvenir shops. & now, just a few more pics:Für mich sind Spaziergänge deutlich interessanter als Besuche in pseudo-antiken Tempeln, selbst wenn es auch nur eine pseudo-antike Stadt ist. Wer also Gyalthang besucht (falls das mal wieder möglich ist) sollte einfach rumlatschen. Man darf sich nur nicht von den Souvenirläden ablenken lassen. & jetzt nur noch ein paar Bilder:

You're right the architecture are very interesting. I like the wooden work too, the designs are so intricate! The whole view of the houses remind me of some of the Chinese movies I saw with this "village type" set up.

For what I know, the locals actually moved to the outskirts. By now, these outskirts probably are bang in the city, though.
