| & after that little excursion into Anglicanism we're back to Orthodoxy. Today's church is quite special in one specific way, its outer appearance. Can't remember having seen another just like it. | Nach der kleinen Exkursion in den Anglikanismus wird es wieder orthodox. | The church in question is called Church of John the Forerunner & of St. John the Russian (Ekklisia Agios Ioannis Prodromos ke Agios Ioannis o Rossos, Εκκλησία Άγιος Ιωάννης ο Ρώσσος). So, not only the outside is special, it also has an especially long name. It is located in the south of the city centre, at the main road from the east of Patras to the new port. The address is Agias Triados 117, Patra 26333 (Αγίας Τριάδος 117, Πάτρα). | Es handelt sich um die Kirche von Johannes dem Vorläufer & von Johannes dem Russen (Ekklisia Agios Ioannis Prodromos ke Agios Ioannis o Rossos, Εκκλησία Άγιος Ιωάννης ο Ρώσσος). Also ist nicht nur das Aussehen speziell, der Name ist auch besonders lang. Sie befindet sich südlich des Stadtzentrums an der Hauptstraße vom Osten Patras' zum neuen Hafen. Die Adress lautet Agias Triados 117, Patra 26333 (Αγίας Τριάδος 117, Πάτρα). |

| When I talk about a special appearance, I mean mostly the bricks. It is not so much the fact that it's just the bare bricks on the outside, but how they appear. I rode along this church quite often on my way to the coast. All the time I thought it had tiles on the outside, because it looked so shiny (which sadly doesn't really come out in the photos). But when I finally took a closer look, it turned out to be just red bricks. | Mit dem besonderen Aussehen beziehe ich mich v.a. auf die Ziegel. Dabei geht es nicht so sehr darum, daß bloße Ziegel die Außenseite formen, sondern wie sie erscheinen. Fuhr recht oft auf dem Weg zur Küste an dieser Kirche vorbei. Dachte immer, die Wände seien gefliest, da sie so zu glänzen schienen (was auf den Fotos leider nicht rauskommt). Als ich schließlich mal näher hinsah, waren es doch nur einfache Ziegelsteine. |

| Major construction occurred between 1997 & 2003, when a new parish around this church was created. If I understand the source correctly, though, that was not the time that the church building was actually finished. Only in 2012, the final consecration happened. | Der Bau scheint hauptsächlich zwischen 1997 & 2003 erfolgt zu sein. Dann wurde eine neue Gemeinde für die Kirche gegründet. Wenn ich das richtig verstehe, wurde der Bau aber erst 2012 wirklich vollendet, als die eigentliche Weihe stattfand. |

| John the Russian was a prisoner of war in the Ottoman Empire at the beginning of the 18th century, who then became a slave of an Ottoman official. He refused to convert to Islam & is alleged to have performed miracles. His relics are interred in Prokopi on the island of Euboea. Well, most of them, his right hand is said to be in a Russian monastery. | Johannes der Russe war ein Kriegsgefangener im Osmanischen Reich Anfang des 18. Jahrhunderts, der einem Offiziellen als Sklave diente. Er weigerte sich, zum Islam zu konvertieren & soll Wunder vollbracht haben. Seine Reliquien befinden sich in Prokopi auf Euböa. Naja, das meiste davon, seine rechte Hand soll in einem russischen Kloster sein. |

| The building lacks the usual iconography on the outside, but the doors are very nicely engraved. John the Forerunner is actually John the Baptist. He's the one who is supposed to have baptised Jesus. | Außen fehlen dem Gebäude die üblichen Ikonen, aber die Türen sind hübsch graviert. Johannes der Vorläufer ist eigentlich Johannes der Täufer, welcher Jesus getauft haben soll. |

| Beside the front entrance stood this little sailing boat. I took these photos around christmas time & new year, so it is related to these celebrations. & as is common in Greece, it was nicely lit at night: | Neben dem Vordereingang stand dieses kleine Segelboot. Die Bilder stammen aus der Weihnachtszeit & dürften mit den Feiern verknüpft sein. Wie üblich in Griechenland war es hübsch erleuchtet: |

| Front entrance with bell-less (?) towers. A nice church, although quite new. The outside may be lacking the usual iconography, the inside is full of it. Definitely worth a visit, if alone for the unique outer appearance, & being close to the centre, easy to reach. So much for today, now just a few more pics: | Vordereingang mit Glocken(losen?)türmen. Dem Äußeren mag es an Verzierungen mangeln, aber das Innere ist voll davon. Definitiv einen Besuch wert, selbst nur für das Erscheinungsbild. & da sie nahe des Zentrums ist, leicht zu erreichen.
