Fungi Friday - THE MUSHROOM-THEMED PRANK OF THE YEAR

avatar
(Edited)

First of all, I would like to say that this is my contribution to #FungiFriday by @ewkaw. With that said, let's continue with the unusual little story this post has to tell. Hope you'll like it.

The summer was hot & dry, and even now, at the beginning of autumn, the situation isn't very different. The days are warm. There is a bit of humidity in the form of the dew early in the morning, but the last rain fell quite a few weeks ago, and even that one wasn't long or strong enough to be significant.
The nature around me doesn't look ready for a fungi season ...

(Enlargeable)

... so you can imagine my surprise when I saw these lovely Agaricus fruiting bodies on the lawn by the side of an unpaved road that leads through Marlera, the coastal area a couple of kilometers from the village of Liznjan, and five or six kilometers from where I live. I was there for insects & spiders - mushrooms were the last thing on my mind.

(Enlargeable)

At first, I thought about some golf-related event that left a bunch of golf balls behind. This area was meant to be turned into a golf course a decade or so ago but then the project came to a dead end. There was too much illegal stuff involved. A plan for covert urbanization of the area, and stuff like that. I thought, who knows, maybe the golf people are up to something again. Then, for a few seconds only, I was pretty sure I was looking at some kind of puffball mushrooms.

(Enlargeable)

One look at this photograph I took when I came closer, makes it clear that these are Agaricus mushrooms of some kind. You can also see that the mushrooms are cut. The weird thing is - I didn't cut them. I just overturned them to see the color of the gills. Someone else cut them and set them up on the lawn. The next weird thing ...

(Enlargeable)

... is their shape and size. They are all more or less the same. When you come across a bunch of wild Agaricus in this area, they are always a mix of smaller and bigger fruiting bodies, and furthermore, they are always in various stages of development. Some are closed, egg-like, or golf ball-like, just like the ones shown in these photographs, while others look like meaty umbrellas.

(Enlargeable)

A scene like this just doesn't look right. But is also absolutely believable at the same time. I don't have DNA evidence or anything like that, but all the circumstantial evidence strongly points toward the theory that someone bought a bunch of cultivated mushrooms, let's say in the supermarket, and then brought them here to set up the mushroom-themed prank of the year, and who knows, maybe even of the century.

When I realized what this congregation of mushrooms was probably about, I started laughing from the deepest depths of my heart and an ordinary day turned into an especially happy one. Later at home, I started being a bit jealous that I wasn't the one who thought and put in practice a prank like this. I don't know who brought these champignon mushrooms to Marlera but I'm very impressed by his or her dedication to the art of making things funnier than usual. If I somehow discover who the author is, I'll make another post that sheds more light on things seen in this one.

(Enlargeable)

These mushrooms are all in good shape, fresh, and perfectly edible, but I didn't pick them. It would be a shame to deny this prank to other people who like to walk around Marlera.

Before leaving, I put the mushrooms I displaced to get some of these photographs, back in their original position. The scene was perfect again, ready to fool another wanderer.

However, I didn't drive back home immediately. I was there primarily for the insects & spiders, so I photographed quite a few of them for my "MACRO OCTOBER IN MARLERA" series. But that's another story, this one ends here.

AS ALWAYS IN MY POSTS ON HIVE, THE PHOTOGRAPHS ARE MY WORK - THE END.

is it really not you who pulled that prank?
the guy/woman who did that must be really dedicated
because that mushroom should end up in the pan, and become part of dinner. : )

I wish I would have been the one to do it. 😃 But nope, this is someone else's masterpiece.

Wow! These white balls look so nice! It would be much more fun if they could creep around at night too! 😂

Great Idea! I'm gonna put them in more or less the same constellation in a place five or ten meters from there if I see them again! They will be like creeping mushrooms from outer space that way!

It was a funny constellation, the fact is that last week I found 10 snowball mushrooms.
I cooked a nice stew!

That's a great find. Here is too dry for now. Supermarkets are the best places to find them these days.

I have seen many mushrooms , different species. This one is really amazing and interesting. Looking like balls on the ground that were attached to soil but actually great fruiting bodies.

Yes, one could certainly play some kind of golf with them.

This is best prank I have ever seen, just look how beautiful they are. Whoever brought this must be a genius. I like the view of this one

Yes, from that angle the scene looks the best. I agree, whoever did this is probably a pretty cool person.

Someone pulled off the perfect mushroom prank! They definitely look like golf balls. It would be hilarious if the prankster was hiding somewhere and videotaped your reactions. You might be a YouTube or TikTok star! @borjan😅🎬

Very funny story. I thought at first that they were figurine mushrooms - they looked so perfect. I think you arrived shortly after the prank was set up. It is nice that you replaced them exactly how they were. Nice photos.

Yes, they are so neatly shaped that look a bit fake. 😃They were very fresh, so the prankster could have been still somewhere near.

What an interesting find! Laughter is the best.. I haven't laughed hard (the kind that hurts) in many years now. I miss that.

I'd be too scared to try one anyway, just in case they were poisoned somehow. Though I live in South Africa as you know, and you have to watch your back all the time (nothing surprizes me).

Look forward to your upcoming posts buddy!

That was my line of thinking as well. 😃 Here is pretty safe, but I can easily imagine quite a few unrealistic dangers and behave like they could be real.

Para mí las setas silvestres son las mejores. No reconozco muchas especies, pero las que conozco y escojo son muy buenas. Mucho mejor que las setas del supermercado.

Maybe the mushrooms have some kind of mystic symbolism, in the shape of something or a specific pattern perhaps. Who knows? but whatever, it's a great story to accompany your photos Today! !VSC

Could be! Maybe this was a part of some mushroom ritual. 😃 Maybe an attempt to change the weather through mysticism and bring the right conditions for the wild mushrooms to appear.

At first, when I saw your photograph I thought it was about something that our friend @ewkaw talked about a few days ago in his post, the "fairy circle", I would never have thought that it was a joke created by someone, although It was great that I came across this panorama, it allowed you to create a post from it
I appreciate you sharing this experience. May you enjoy the weekend

"Fairy circles" are extremely cool. Yes, the "fairy circle" came to my mind as well when I saw these mushrooms, but this was more like a "fairy herd of sheep or something similar" so I excluded the circle quickly. But yes, you can see mushrooms grow in sparse groups fairly similar to this fake one. I wish you a great weekend.

Maybe one day I discover who's the mad genius who did this. 😃 It made me laugh a lot ... and the fact that the joke gave me the opportunity to make an easy but fairly attractive post also has to be appreciated.

Conclusion other people have already done a job and you simply manage to take the photos, possibly some people were watching that man take photos of the mushrooms, if they don't come closer it is because they realize that you are only taking photos.
This makes me remember, sometimes I go to take photos of roses, some ladies look at me, they realize that I'm not going to steal them hahahaha, that I just take the photos and they move away from the window hahahaha they see me and I I see them .
I wish you a happy weekend
