PhotoFeed Contest - Cityscape - Martim Moniz Square.
Hi everyone!
Continuing with a tour of Lisbon from the air, this time we arrive in Martim Moniz Square!
Found to the east of the centre and just aroud the corner from this square is usually very busy.
According to local legend, nobleman Martim Moniz saved the castle of Lisbon from Moorish (invading forces from north Africa) occupation in 1147. He sacrificed himself by throwing his body under castle doors to precvent them from closing which gave Christian soldiers time to arrive and reconquer the castle at the birth of the nation of Portugal.
In modern day, the area is unofficially known as Chinatown as the majority of restaurants around the perimeter offer Asian cuisine.

In the centre of the square are three fountains- each vastly different from another. According to the architects. the designs are based on different elements of the castle.
In the images below, the fountain orientated east to west across the square represents where the wall protecting the original city and castle once stood. This leads to the ruin of a guard tower up a small hill opposite the castle. From here, the wall zig zagged west over the valley side, reaching the southern most point of Praça dos Restauradores, just behind the Teatro Nacional D. Maria II.

To the north, a long tree lined avenue leading to Almeda Park and beyond.

To the west is the headquarters for the fire service.

The ruin of a wall guard tower mentioned earlier.

To the east is a stop for the iconic Tram 22 route which snakes through some of the oldest streets in the city. Tourists head here as a starting point for some reason- maybe a lot the travel advisory companies say it's the best place(?). There is always a queue!

At the southern end of the square is Hotel Mundial.

Further south after passing the hotel is getting close to the flight restricted zone of the Pombaline District and Praça Dom Pedro IV. so I kept a safe distance.
Take care everyone, until the next time!
¡Cuida a todos, hasta la próxima!
