PhotoFeed Contest - Cityscape - BAP Union Visits London.
Hey everyone!
Another week, another unique guest arriving in London.
BAP Union is a training ship for the Peruvian Navy & serves as a floating ambassador for the country.
She was built in the early 2010's and is the second largest sailing vessel in the world.
I was amazed by the sheer scale of her as she came on to the horizon at Tilbury. If you have ever stood next to the Cutty Sark for example, she has a longer beam, one extra mast and the three main masts are a few metres taller.
She was moving up the Thames at about 2 metres per second, I looked for other locations along the river and stopped off in Purfleet on Thames. I found a path on an unused piece of land nestled between industrial estates and fuel depots.
Here I was able to get shots of her in front of Dartford Crossing and fly along side it once again. Fortunately, she passed close to the north bank owing to sandbanks and silt under the water that forms a narrowish channel.
As if the ship isn't photogenic enough already- a huge Peruvian flag had been hoisted on the rear mast.
Continuing to drive west to my planned destination- I met her just as she arrived at the O2 and was then expertly manoeuvred by two tug boats into the Isle Of Dogs where she will be docked until the end of the week.
There are quite a few images of the ship visiting other countries and personnel are standing on the masts in some form of presentation - Could it be a tradition or a 'goodbye'? Hopefully they do it on the way out!
Thankfully, there are no airspace warnings or restrictions anywhere near Tilbury or Purfleet, just east of the O2 is London City airport so I just had to be mindful of any aircraft, obstacles and checking if the boat used its own drone crew flying.
I hope you enjoyed seeing her as much as I did flying around her!
Take care.
