PhotoFeed Contest - Cityscape - BAP Union Leaving London.
Hi everyone!
The sailing ship BAP Union covered in the previous post left London a couple of days ago in the late afternoon.
She waited near the lock bridge for a while before being expertly moved out onto the river by the tug boats and escorted along the river.
Forgive similar shots to my previous post when she arrived, there is only one way in and out of the dock!
I had a shot in mind of capturing the O2 in the background as a contrast. There were a lot of seagulls flying around so extra care was taken.
The temperature standing in direct sunlight was 27 celcius which was demanding for myself and the drone. I had to keep my bag in my shadow for lack of trees around whilst looking out across the river. I also made sure to ventilate the drone when I landed it to give time for it to cool.
The next location I planned to visit was Dartford Crossing. I found a footpath on the south side of the river which meant I could fly closer to the bridge than last time. Turns out that the path runs right under the bridge which I never expected.
The shot I had visualised in my head was from under the middle of the bridge, looking along the underside to snap the top of the masts as the ship passed under.
Unfortunately it was a little gusty so I decided to fly at a safe distance. I did raise the drone to the height of the road on bridge for some idea of clearance. I'm still happy with the outcome!
The tug boats assisting her parted ways a little further along the river at Gravesend.
She is now on her way to Aberdeen to compete in a tall ship race that zig zags around various different cities around Europe each year.
The group of almost one hundred sailing vessels should look very impressive from land or air and I am quite gutted I won't be able to see it in person.

Thanks! From what I have seen on social media, the company operating it has a drone team / hired a company to film it so I'm glad I got so much footage :)
