PhotoFeed Contest - Cityscape - Avenue da Liberdade.
Hi everyone!
Continuing with a tour of Lisbon from the air, we reach Marques De Pombal monument. It is a glorious ornate example of stonework and craftsmanship. It took 17 years to build and features many details including portraits representing the reforms and female figure representing the rebuilt city.
Pombal himself however is controversial- on one hand, he was the prime minister working directly under the King and was responsible for igniting the Portuguese economy and trade. He also personally designed and oversaw the rebuilding of the city after a devastating earthquake in 1755.
On the other hand, the boosting of the economy came at great cost to lower classes of society with fatal consequences.

Avenue da Liberdade is a long tree lined avenue linking Marques De Pombal with Praça dos Restauradores which leads further south, ending with Praça Dom Pedro IV. Along the way, statues of significant figures throughout the history of the city and the country are found.

The avenue was completed in 1755 and was a park only accessible to residents in the highest class. That was until 1886 when the walls were removed and all classes were free to use it.

Finally Praça dos Restauradores is a medium sized public square at the very end of Avenue da Liberdade.

The square is named after and dedicated to independence of Portugal in 1640.
The Monument here was built in 1886 and for the Restorers and marks the battles fought against the Spanish between 1640 and 1668.

As the avenue is on a hill and the road inclines away from this point, this makes a regular image appear to be a trippy inception style photo!

My second favourite building in the city is this amazing retro style facade of an old theatre that is now a hotel.

Take care until the next time!
