A Huge Highland Adventure! [Part Four]
Next day I headed to the south east. I decided to go directly to the coast and the town of Stonehaven. I stopped off in Kirriemuir. Reason being because it is the birthplace of a couple of famous people. One being J.M Barrie, creator of Peter Pan.
This was the street he lived on.
Very sad story of a family struggling with the loss of a child, of which Peter Pan is based on.
Small warning before you continue reading, skip to the next photo if so..
Barries older brother and the mothers favourite child, tragically died whilst iceskating at the age of seven. Thereafter, Barrie would dress up as the older brother to aid his mothers trauma. When it came to the creating the sculpture of Peter Pan (below), Barrie himself wanted to dress up for the sculptor to use as reference, as he had done so for his mother since the death of his brother. It was politely decided that a child would dress up as it would be more true to the story for visitors.
On a much happier note, the town was also home to AC/DC legend Bon Scott.
Above was where the family once lived and owned a small shop when he was a child, for just a year. The town takes as much as they can from that fact, so much so that there is an annual rock festival- Bonfest, where for the past 18 years, thousands of fans descend on the small town to socialise, support local bands and honour AC/DC.
Other shops ride the wave and have themed goods (below).
A life sized statue of Scott was funded by the global AC/DC fanbase and there is information about it nearby.
Trivia: He was named Bonnie Scott but when the band was formed, his name was shortened as it was thought he would be more manly.
Stonehaven
Before I explored, I ate in 'The Cool Gourmet' to try out Beef Stovies which were absolutely incredible.
To walk it off, I was advised to walk along a boardwalk on the coast to check out some sculptures made by local artists.
I found my way to location just south of the town called Downie Point. From there I could take off from a footpath and take in views of the town from a higher vantage point. The wind was strong preceding the cloud front that passed over.
Here's what that rain cell looked like from the drones perspective, the clouds were seemingly just above the surface of the ocean.
There is also a war memorial for those Scots who lost their lives during World War 1.
One final photo of the cliffs for good measure.
Arbroath
I drove around north of Inverbervie Montrose in interest of time and ended up in Arbroath. On the way there I randomly passed two bridges, one for cars, one for trains that crossed a small valley and almost intersected at one end.
I'll be honest, I had no intention of exploring the town of Arbroath itself, however I did stop off for a few drone shots.
I just saw the cliffs on Google Maps and put the area on the 'to go' list.
Pictures would never do it justice but here is an idea of the terrain. From a free carpark, it is a short, easy going and very flat walk that is a very small part of a huge coastal walk.
The cliffs have a unique structure after being eroded over time. There is an arch which a lot of tourists stand on top of for a photo op and there is a formation inside a nature reserve called Devils Heid.
Although this gives you an idea of what the rocks looked like, I actually found it more interesting to look at from the ground perspective!
Take care everyone, stay tuned for part five!

Wow, that pano shot of the rain cells is amazing.
Thanks! It was incredible to watch it come over and I had a little giggle to myself how amazing it looked as I packed up in the rain 😅
