This farmer was going home from his field and he was accompanied by couple of cows as well. He had stopped to allow me to take the pictures. The mud on the road was making it little tricky for me to stand and the rain which followed made sure that I had to run !

Those are wonderful :) ... Is it still common in your area to use elephants?

Elephants are these days mostly used for rescue of wild animals. For examples these elephants seems to be "trained rescue" elephants and reside in a national reserve.

Elephants are otherwise used in various religious and other festivals.

How can elephants rescue other animals? I guess one day they will only be in the refuges, the way things are changing?

So these elephants help other wild elephants which are injured or fallen into trenches etc. I have seen photos/read news about this multiple times. When an injured wild elephant is treated, they are often sedated and these elephants help them to navigate back. Also pull them up from pits etc.

As you said, the elephants are mostly going to be in refuges pretty soon as domesticating is no more legal.

In a way that's good, because they deserve to be free. But it does make me wonder what will happen when they begin to overpopulate too.
