The painter's workbench! A suggestive image. The struggle of colors to get onto the canvas...

What might be the best time to visit an exhibition? I think the answer is "whenever it is open but especially on Sundays". I think Sunday is the best day because it is supposed to be a day of rest so we can put aside the problems that bother us during the week and we are ready to admire something beautiful. Made by the hand of man, a man gifted with a special talent!

Unfortunately, the habit of going to exhibitions and museums has long since been lost. That's why I can call the day when I rarely happen to see an exhibition a sublime day. In this case, a sublime Sunday!

A recent trip to a mountain resort in Romania, Sinaia, gave me the chance to visit another painting exhibition. It was an unplanned visit. I wanted to visit the casino building, which is no longer a casino but the building is beautiful. Especially the interiors. Because I paid for a ticket to visit the casino, I got a bonus to visit a painting exhibition hosted in a room of the casino. An exhibition by a Romanian painter unknown to me, to my shame. Because I am a very small collector and know little about contemporary painters from my country. Well, I didn't know about this painter. Augustin Costinescu!

It was a pleasant surprise and I'm so glad I could learn about this painter. I learn something from every trip but I didn't expect to learn about painting from a trip to the mountains.

Pictures At An Exhibition

Costinescu's paintings are bright and beautifully colored.
Of course, there are many influences, from Picasso, Matisse, and even Theodor Pallady, a classic Romanian painter.
But that doesn't mean I wouldn't want a Costinescu painting in my home.

When I'm at an exhibition I love to look not only at the paintings but also at the people looking at them. I like to photograph these people, especially as they are looking into the paintings and not noticing that they have become subjects for the photograph...

About the title of this post.

I like to use titles inspired by the names of movies or music I like.
In this case, I remembered the title of an LP by a band I really like.

Emerson, Lake, and Palmer. Only Palmer is still alive...

If you'd like to hear some of this record, here you can: Pictures At An Exhibition

*Post inspired by #sublimesunday, suggested by @c0ff33a, #beautifusunday, by @ace108, and, of course, dedicated to all readers but, especially, to all viewers!

I think so, too. Thefore, which day you visit might not be important. People have recently been struggling to make a living.

That seems like trying hard to get the right color the artist want. 😎

My mom used to paint oils and had a workbench much like that. I can see it in my mind, but I can smell it even more so. The paints and the turpentine, I love it.

It is a sad truth that exhibitions and museums have fallen out of favor for many. I still enjoy going and I will admit that because Washington, DC is a destination for many, the museums get more visits here than they would with just us locals.

I like to think it is influenced by how these things socialize with children and young people. If it is not being nurtured at home, then it never becomes part of their natural life. People used to introduce culture, art, dance, and music into the lives of their children. Now, they work outside of the home instead and schools no longer introduce it, but, you can select to learn it if you want.

So, these things fall out of favor.

It is never a shame to not know of an artist, there are so many and their talents are varied, according to your tastes. Augustin Costinescu has come up for auction, but, I have only come across his name twice, more recent than not. The price was pretty consistent, but, I am more of a looker. :) I am envious that you have that right there, but, he is Romania's - and is he from Bucharest or just displayed there?

In any case, I think you spent a wonderful Sunday there, beautiful and sublime!

That's right, unfortunately, regular museums are no longer in demand. As you say, the education in your family may push you to want to visit a museum... or school. I learned about museums at school.

Yes, there are so many painters. Costinescu and many like him are from other cities of the country and are much better known locally. Costinescu died last year and his family donated his works to the town of Sinaia and a permanent exhibition was opened at the casino. I was glad that, totally by accident, I found out about him.
