Greece Is Calling Me Back
That's how I like to think and dream... that Greece wants me back on the island, the only island of my life, the island of Thassos in the Aegean Sea in northern Greece.
I am a sea lover who has no sea... around. A few hundred kilometers separate me from the sea, hundreds of kilometers I travel every summer to see and feel the sea.
This love of the sea, this permanent longing for the sea, seems a bit exalted and inappropriate for a man of my age. I see it but do nothing to... stop doing it! It is exaggerated, of course, but I especially let this state overtake me, lest I forget. Forgetting, at my age, is a reputable enemy.
One of the most effective weapons with which I fight forgetfulness is image. The image was preserved and reproduced to me by photographs.
In the last few years, unfortunately, only in the last ten years, I have collected a lot of photographs from my travels. So many that I no longer have enough memory space in my laptop. Nor is the external memory. Because when I travel, I take pictures almost all the time. Without making too careful a selection. This takes its toll and now I have to do a photo check and discard those that are not of acceptable quality.
On this occasion, I revisited the photos from my travels in Greece and thought I would post some of them.
The short ferry trip from Keramoti (mainland Greece) to Limenas (capital of Thassos island).
Only half an hour sailing by ferry. It is interesting, at least for me, to observe what people do when they are on the boat. Everyone manifests differently, according to age, gender, and degree of excitement. I was very excited, which cannot be said about my very young fellow traveler. I think his father was more nervous and tried to hide his excitement in a beer can...
Just as presidential jets are escorted by fighter jets our ferry has been taken under protection by gulls.
Thassos is a large island, I think the tenth in the ranking of thousands of islands in the Greek archipelago. It is a mountainous and forested island. It is a very beautiful island!
Approaching the island arouses the interest and impatience of passengers. They all want to get to the island as quickly as possible. Some to discover... others to revisit!
I was already in the category of those looking forward to seeing it again.
Arrived in the small port on the island, looking at the ships waiting for the next crossing.
For an earthling like me, sitting on an island seems a bit uncomfortable. The fact that there's only water around makes me a little nervous. What if the boats disappear and I can't get home?

Thanks!
Thasos is about 5 hours far from Istanbul by bus. It is also preferred by Turkish people in recent year. I would like to visit it one day as well.
Close enough. Worth a visit sometime...
