Amateur Photography Mistake (also can you guess the story of this play?)

Avoid this easy to fix Photography Mistake

2P3A7551.jpg

You can partly see the mistake in this first photo (i could claim it was done on intentionally because i didn't show all the bad ones :))

It is motion blur. Caused by slow shutter speed. You can check all the details about SHUTTER SPEED HERE

2P3A7438.jpg

In short, i made an amateur mistake by keeping the shutter speed to slow. Setting for most photos were 1/160 sec. I wanted to keep the ISO as low as possible (1000 ISO for this one) and thought 1/160 of a sec. would be ok for a play.

2P3A7441.jpg

If you mess it up big time, you will see motion blur on your camera screen because everything will be blurry. But when you make a half mistake it is hard to see it on the screen of the camera if you don't zoom in on the part it is blurry. And in this half mistake blurry parts were those that were moving faster (mostly hands and legs 😄 sometimes head or full body)

2P3A7467.jpg

So the easy fix here would be to set the Shutter speed to 1/250 (think that would work) and get the ISO up to probably 1600.

Now the shoot was not a waste but there were some photos that were blurry and i would be happy with them, if i only got the speed up.

2P3A7471.jpg

Think about your shutter speed when you photograph moving subjects.

2P3A7483.jpg

Now to the second part of this post. Can you guess what is the story of the play?

One clue that was not possible to capture and it is pretty important for the story.
There is a sting of a bee somewhere half into the play :)
(it was hard to capture imaginary bee :) )

Cheating? I tried my best and it's a good guessing game but I am not sure I'm right.

you could say that a side part of the story is the accusation of cheating but not the main plot. the name of it is But don't walk around naked!

Would have never guessed to be honest, but it was a good game 😀

This is so obvious... did you learn smth you did not know before, no, really?

it is a basic photography if you know what shutter speed does. and still there are situations where you could have a shutter speed of 1/30 and not get motion blur.

(Edited)

sure thing! ps. when I started photography with DSLR, this was my very prominent error. I was inspired by the idea of getting a) more sharp and detailed photos, b) with less digital noises - so I shoot mostly with ISO 400 or less, and aperture 4-5 > thus, was getting shutter speeds at 1/30 and less automatically... not only indoors but outdoors too... well, I long grew up from that xD

My first fascination with DSLR was long exposure and lightpainting, but i did photograph a lot of on stage stuff. and amateur theatres and stages usually don't have a great light. so i accepted the noise (and a lot of BW). was also lucky to make a decision and buy 50mm 1.8 from the start, helped a lot.

but if you don't aim for photography prizes and shoot for memories you can get away with a lot. i do have some shots that are blurry, noisy but are a great capture of a moment for everyone. i just don't look at them in full screen on my new monitor 😁

ha! canon 50 1.8 was my 1st lens too - and the only one, for like 6-7 years. awesome starting point of evolution.

i also got the kit 18-55 with the camera, but if you have to be on a budget there is nothing better than plastic fantastic 50mm :)

Motion blur may not always be a mistake. Sometimes it's also an authorial intention to emphasize movement. 😀

Sometimes you simply have no choice! camera is not capable of operating 10500 ISO, and the lighting is below zero.... I use to capture at 1/30, 1/15 a lot.... sadly. :D well, there is another choice here actually: walk away and do not shoot at all, hehe.

i started my photography with low light places and camera where everything over 1600 ISO is not really usable. there are few options there. Accept the noise (that i done, just don't look at it on 4k 30inch monitor :D ), find a good mix of motion blur and noise ratio.
I photographed handball with 1/160 shutter speed, you just end up panning a lot and hoping the face is not blurry :)

yes... there are given conditions, consequences, and when you live with it, you develop one solution or another. there is also an extra one - in such poor light spaces, one may change to B-W, it allows you to accept higher ISO's and you may get less blur in the captures.

Good subject to talk about, anyway. !BEER

yap, BW is the "artistic choice" when colors look bad because of no light. Done that a lot 😂

sometimes you think i would never show this photo to anyone because the colors look so washed up and noisy, then you go BW and look at it on the phone and it is a great image 😄

Exactly so! I also used (sometimes) to mask this with x-processing effect, which create some attractive colors where there are none, but that is non universal solution (like B-W).

panning is also a good example for motion blur that works well :)

A slower shutter speed can work in this situation if you only capture gestures made with the hands I think, but not so good if faces get blurred.

that is why i said i could claim it was as intended (but there were few shots that i liked but were blurry).
Main problem probably was that first few shots were pretty static so there was no blur there, and i just didn't check after that as i was happy with exposure.

Thank you for the tips @bil.prag !

By the way, your publication has the "feel" of an old magazine photo-novel! Spectacular! I can't guess which play it is... And I bet it's a play that's easily recognizable, but as it's an art that I don't follow very closely, it passed me by.
My photos next to yours are so miserable... Ahahah Photographing with a simple Samsung A40 isn't as enjoyable as I'd like it to be... I'll have to invest in a camera ;)

Cheers

the exact name of the play is probably hard, i had problems finding it with knowing the name of it but translated to slovak :) it is happening in Paris probably somewhere around 1910. the story could probably be guessed. or maybe it just looks like that to me because i watched it :)

you can do a lot with phones today, but there are some limitations in specific situations that you just can't overcome.

i like this video about phone photography, it is pretty inspirational :)

Thank you so much for the video!

I found it very inspirational, indeed, just like you said. And seeing the work of Kathy Ryan, and what she could capture with her phone, and on her work (a single place), made me think that by "limiting my self to a particular set, and camera/lens (like a smartphone's one), can trigger my imagination and creativity.

One thing that i already do by "intuition" is to shoot high contrast themes (like streetart), and the #8 tip : Shoot in Black%White mode! I love to do that, cause I can find much more quality with a monochromatic composition, releasing me from the colors and hue question seeing in mobile photos.

I will surely download the Lightroom Mobile App, and use it as my camera function enhancer! Gonna download it right away!

Thank you so much for this inspirational video!

i like his videos because there are some good tips but they are pretty inspirational and always goes to the art side of photography.

phone is specific because there are some thing that you just can't do with it. but there is a lot that they do well nowadays. i always invested in camera gear and had cheap phones, cheap phones 99% of the time means bad camera :) now i got pixel 6a and should make myself take more photos with it.

i also like snapseed for editing on mobile.

Yes, the pixel 6a it is well known for the photographic features. About the editing, I prefer to do it in the computer, with a big (normal) screen, and more time ;) I use PhotoScape X (free version), and I have a lot of choices. The interface it's easy and a lot of parameters!

I will install the Snapseed and try it out ;)

About the Lightroom Mobile App I don't have the choice to use as a camera app for my phone :| To bad, i'll try to find it out another one that allows me to control more things in my phone camera.

Btw. great photos, despite the mistake with the shutter... :)

Nice vibe on how 'oldschool' the plays actually looks... But uhhhh which one is it? (I have no idea so no guessing on this one)

But yeah, shuttertime....big issues on when people have the audacity to move :D

the name would be probably hard to guess, the story maybe a bit easier. it is a play from a French writer from 1911. Not sure how much it was changed, but i would not guess they had this kind of a problems at that time.

problem is they didn't move a lot at the start, when i was setting my exposure :) they started moving more later on :)

If you wouldn't say what the mistake was in the first picture, it would take me a while to notice it, haha. But I think it blends well with the rest of the scene, making it more realistic somehow :D
