Meet Las Delicias Zoo in Maracay-Venezuela [ENG-ESP]

Hello fellow travelers. Within the city of Maracay in the state of Aragua-Venezuela, we find the Las Delicias Zoo, this place was first inaugurated by General Juan Vicente Gomez as a place where he had animals of the national fauna, over the years it became the Maracay Zoo and brought different species of animals from Africa and other parts of the world.

Since 2015 it was closed for remodeling and it was not until early 2023 when its doors were reopened. I had not had the opportunity to visit it after the remodeling and I remember that before I went and the animals had given me pity for their neglect, but I had faith that this time it would be different.

Hola amigos viajeros. Dentro de la ciudad de Maracay en el estado Aragua-Venezuela, encontramos el Zoológico Las Delicias, este lugar fue inaugurado por primera vez por el General Juan Vicente Gómez como un sitio donde tenía animales de la fauna nacional, con el pasar de los años se convirtió en el Zoológico de Maracay y trajo diferentes especies de animales de África y otros lugares del mundo.

Desde el año 2015 estuvo cerrado por remodelación y no fue hasta principios del 2023 cuando se reabrieron sus puertas. No había tenido la oportunidad de visitarlo luego de la remodelación y recuerdo que antes fui y los animales me habían dado lastima por el descuido de los mismos, pero tenía fé que está vez seria diferente.

I want you to know that the facilities are beautiful, from the entrance you can see the modernity and the decoration of the walls with murals of different animals, I think what I liked most were these murals that are in each area to distinguish the animals that we are going to find in the area. We also found two large statues of felines where we can take pictures before entering because we can not do it with the real animals.

At the entrance we find the rules of the place, what can and cannot be done with the animals and in the green areas. Then there is the ticket office, the cost itself is not very high since the general admission is 2$, children from 3 to 11 years old pay 1$ and adults over 65 and children from 0 to 2 years old are exempt from payment.

Quiero que sepas que las instalaciones son preciosas, desde la entrada se ve la modernidad y la decoración de las paredes con murales de diferentes animales, creo que lo que más me gustó fueron estos murales que están en cada área para distinguir los animales que nos vamos a encontrar en la zona. También encontramos dos grandes estatuas de felinos dónde podemos tomarnos fotografías antes de entrar ya que con los animales reales no podemos hacerlo.

En la entrada encontramos las normas de lugar, lo que se puede o no hacer con los animales y en las zonas verdes. Luego está la taquilla, el costo en si, no es muy alto ya que la entrada general cuesta 2$ , los niños de 3 a 11 años pagan 1$ y los adultos mayores de 65 y los niños de 0 a 2 años están exonerados del pago.

Upon entering we realized that the green areas are very well kept, everything looks very nice and in every part there are signs that tell you not to step on the grass. We started to walk around the place on the right side to go by parts since this zoo has 7 hectares and we wanted to go all over it.

The first animal we found was the manatee, although I could not take pictures because it was submerged and when it came out I did not have time to activate my camera, then the ostriches and wild pigs that by the way are quite many and are spread over several cages, as well as the Morrocoy Sabanero that are also many and of different sizes. On this road we find some empty cages but we keep walking.

Al entrar nos damos cuenta que las áreas verdes están muy bien cuidadas, todo se ve muy bonito y en cada parte hay carteles que te dicen que no debes pisar el césped. Empezamos a recorrer el lugar por el lado derecho para ir por partes ya que este zoológico cuenta con 7 hectáreas y queríamos recorrerlo todo.

El primer animal que encontramos fue el manatí, aunque no le pude tomar fotografías porque estaba sumergido y cuando salió no me dio tiempo de activar mi cámara, luego los avestruces y los cerdos salvajes que por cierto son bastantes y están repartidos en varias jaulas, al igual que el morrocoy sabanero que también son muchos y de diferentes tamaños. En este camino nos encontramos algunas jaulas vacías pero seguimos caminando.

Again I would like to say that I loved the place, it has many trees and you can breathe fresh air, it makes you sit and camp in the green areas but you know you can’t do it. Although the day I visited there was little influx of people, by the Instagram I could realice that other days like Children’s Day there were many people.

Further ahead were the wolf dogs, jaguars, otters and others. We found a kind of square with wooden benches and in the center there is a large fountain made of stones, I imagine it is a construction from the years of General Gomez, at the time of our visit the fountain was not lit and I have no knowledge if it works.

Nuevamente quiero decir que el lugar me encantó, tiene muchos árboles y se respira aire fresco, provoca sentarte y acampar en las áreas verdes pero sabes que no puedes hacerlo. Aunque el día que lo visité había poca afluencia de personas, por el Instagram pude darme cuenta que otros días como el Día del Niño había mucha gente.

Más adelantes estaban los perros lobos, jaguares, nutrias y otros. Nos encontramos una especie de plaza con unas bancas de madera y en el centro hay una gran fuente elaboradas con piedras, me imagino que es una construcción desde los años del General Gómez, en el momento de nuestra visita la fuente no estaba encendida y tampoco tengo conocimiento si funciona.

The zoo has a café area where there is a restaurant called Lucky Café, in honor of the elephant 🐘 that lived many years in this zoo until the time of his death in 2012, there are also vendors of ice cream, cotufas and other treats.

Further on we also find a work of art in honor of this elephant that was very emblematic for the zoo, this work is made of rubber and metal painted in gold color.

El zoológico cuenta con un área de cafetín dónde se encuentra un restaurante llamado Lucky Café, en honor al elefante 🐘 que vivió muchos años en este zoológico hasta el momento de su muerte en el 2012, también hay vendedores de helados, cotufas y otras golosinas.

Más adelante también encontramos una obra de arte en honor a esta elefante que fue muy emblemática para el zoológico, está obra está elaborada con caucho y metal pintados de color dorado.

We arrived at the mansion where the General is said to have lived and which currently houses a museum where we can find the skeleton of a Manatee and we could also learn thanks to their facilitators about Taxidermy, which is the art of drying animals and where we could sit on some chairs that are preserved from its beginnings, when the mansion belonged to Gomez.

The tour is facilitated by the signs on the trails that guide us through the place.

Llegamos a la casona dónde se dice vivía el General y en la que actualmente se encuentra un museo donde podemos encontrar el esqueleto de un Manatí así como también pudimos conocer gracias a sus facilitadoras sobre la Taxidermia, que es el arte de desecar animales y dónde nos pudimos sentar en algunas sillas que se conservan desde sus inicios, cuando la casona le pertenecía a Gómez.

El recorrido se facilita gracias a los carteles que se encuentran en los senderos y que nos guían por el lugar.

As I said at the entrance of each area we found the beautiful mural, in the felines unlike other zoos here you can see them through a glass, in this area I could not see many, but the ones we could see were the pair of white lions posing to be admired and even saw them playing with each other.

Cómo dije a la entrada de cada zona nos encontramos con el hermoso mural, en los felinos a diferencia de otros zoológico aquí los puedes ver a través de un vidrio, en esta área no pude ver muchos, pero a los que si pudimos ver fue a la pareja de leones blancos quienes se posaron para ser admirados y hasta los vimos jugando entre si.

I also liked the bird habitat very much, since the tour is done through the center, giving the feeling of being inside the cage, here you can see birds like the harpy eagle, scarlet macaw, toucan, condor of the Andes, King Zamuro, parakeets, peacock and other species of birds.

El hábitat de las aves también me gustó mucho, ya que el recorrido se hace por el centro, dando la sensación de estar dentro de la jaula, aquí se pueden ver aves como el águila arpía, guacamayo rojo, tucán, cóndor de los Andes, Rey Zamuro, pericos, pavo real y otras especies de aves.

This Zoo also has a small contact farm where you can find cows, goats, ostriches, wild pigs and like the other areas also has its beautiful mural.

In two different ponds you can find the caimans. The Orinoco caiman and the caiman of the coast, here there is only one animal of each of these species.

Este Zoológico también cuenta con una pequeña granja de contacto dónde se pueden encontrar vacas, chivos, avestruces, cerdos salvajes y al igual que las otras áreas también tiene su hermoso mural.

En dos estanques diferentes se encuentran los caimanes. El caimán del Orinoco y el caimán de la costa, aquí solo hay un animal de cada una de estas especies.

If after so much walking you are tired again, we find another rest area with wooden seats so you can enjoy the scenery in the shade.

We can also find deer, llamas and capuchin monkeys that are in an area with wooden houses that are connected by bridges made with ropes where they can play, this habitat is not enclosed with fences but is surrounded by water.

Si después de tanto caminar vuelves a estar cansado encontramos otra zona de descanso con asientos de madera para que puedas disfrutar del paisaje en la sombra.

También podemos encontrar venados, llamas y los monos capuchinos que están en un área con casas de madera que se conectan a través de puentes elaborados con cuerdas donde pueden jugar, este hábitat no está encerrado con rejas pero se encuentra rodeado por agua.
