Azores - Lagoa do Fogo without Fogo

What I´m going to show you today from our fourth day, or better, from our third morning at Sao Miguel, the most popular from the 9 Azores island is one of the highlights. The island has many many beautiful spots and sights to visit and it really wasn´t easy to pack most of them into a 7 day Holiday. Not only because of the time itself, but also because of the constantly changing weather.

As you can imagine and as the name already suggests, it is often foggy at the well-known Lago do Fogo. As you can already see on the photo above, we once again were quite lucky since we had the best weather that morning. Below you will find an image from the webcam I was talking about last time. The image is a few days old and as you can see...you can see nothing. Pretty much the same like it is right now http://www.spotazores.com/cam/lagoa-do-fogo/

Anyway, thanks to this awesome webcam that I´ve checked after breakfast we managed to get the best out of this day again. We immediatelly packed our stuff for the day and went off. It was only a short ride up to the lake in 575 m hight. This beautiful lake does exist since the last eruption of the Pico da Sapateira in 1563, which has not existed since then.

The only thing that concerned me that morning was the temperature display in the car that was dropping drastically the further we went up. I started the morning in shorts but after getting out of the car at 11 degree I changed my mind and my pants. :)

Although it felt freezing cold with the additional wind and the blue sky, we decided to go for a short walk over the rim along the crater. As I have mentioned in posts before we did not have any professional hiking shoes or other equipment to go on longer hikes and this morning I actually regret it for the first time. The views were fantastic, the weather cold but really nice and the track to walk was amazing.

It was an unbeatable start in the morning and a great walk but after 20 mins we gave up since the path was muddy and the wind was absolutely freezing cold as you can see in our faces below. The views we had from all these different angles were breathtaking. When we got up in the morning we did not expect to see such a beauty of nature on that day.

See yourself on the photos and make sure to visit that place whenever you plan to go to Portugal. Its is absolutely worth it and still not as touristy as other regions.

The one below is my favourite shot of the day and I bet there are even better angles if you continue the walk around the crater or come either at sunrise or sunset. You can actually walk down to the lake but it will take you a while.

It is not only the view on to the lake, the area is also considered a bird paradise and the green and lush surroundings are no less beautiful. All in all this is one beautiful place to visit and should definitely be on your list while travelling the Azores. And remember to use the webcam since that's really something I wouldn't have wanted to miss.

That was really a beautiful morning and you now may think how I want to top this and if it is even possible to find something more beautiful on the island. Well, we did and we actually managed to do it on the same day but more about the most amazing day of our Azores trip in my next blog. Hope you enjoyed it.

yes got a bit of luck this morning :). Unfortunately I can´t see your photos. They immediatelly disappear but I can imagine that it doesn´t look really nice when its foggy up there. as said the webcam saved us many times during that week.

Here is one of the shots from Lagoa do Fogo:

No, we were only on Sao Miguel the whole time. When we lived in the north in a little village called Joao Bom, Sete Cidades was just like 30 minutes walk from our house :) Amazing location...
