From All Over Turkiye 5 / Türkiye'nin Dört Bir Yanından 5: Selimiye Mosque and Foundation Museum, Üç Şerefeli Mosque
Hello everyone!
Today we are saying goodbye to Istanbul, which we will not visit for a while, and heading towards Edirne. Selimiye Mosque, Selimiye Foundation Museum, and Üç Şerefeli Mosque are among our destinations today. Of course, since these destinations are within walking distance, I will try to add a few photos of the buildings I encountered on the way. Our first stop will be a mosque. The famous Edirne Selimiye Mosque.
Selimiye Mosque, the work of Mimar Sinan:
This mosque, the construction of which was owned by the famous Mimar Sinan, was built when he was 75 years old. It is not an early age at all, as you can approve. The construction of the mosque, which started in 1568, took about 8 years and was completed in 1575.
When we visited, the 450-year-old mosque was under restoration, which I think it has survived well despite such bad use. You can easily see the minarets under restoration in the cover photo and in the photos just above. I should also add that this mosque is known as the masterpiece of the famous Sinan Efendi.
Why Selimiye?
It should not be difficult to think that the name father could be one of the Ottoman Sultans. Selim, yes, but which one? The answer to that question is Selim II. He was a bit aggressive. According to what we were told, there is an inverted tulip motif in the mosque. This tulip was made to represent Selim II's aggressiveness and impudence.
Unfortunately, I could not take a photo of the tulip because it was in the restoration area, and I could not even see it myself, but I think it is good information to share.
His Masterpiece:
Surely there is a reason why this mosque is known as Mimar Sinan's masterpiece, right?
Architectural Reasons;
Octagonal Base; One of the important details is that the base of the mosque is octagonal instead of the traditional square. You can easily see what I mean in the picture left above. Just as the upper part was octagonal, so was the base.
Semi-Domes; He added semi-domes to the eight buttresses (a kind of carrier, building supporter) carrying the main dome of the mosque, thus providing more support to the dome and increasing the resistance of the mosque against earthquakes. Again, in the photo above, you can easily see the half domes near the lower right side.
Marble Minarets; The minarets of Selimiye Mosque are made of marble, which was used for the first time in the Ottoman Empire at that time.
Acoustics; The acoustic design of the mosque is quite successful. In this way, the imam's voice can be easily heard in every corner of the mosque. Unfortunately, we could not test the acoustics in the whole mosque, but the sound level in the centre of the mosque made me take off my headphones and listen to the instructor without headphones.
Location;
Mimar Sinan built the mosque at the highest point of the city. I was able to see the mosque from the parts of the city I visited. Of course, this is not the case for the newly industrialised and concreted city. It is not so easy to see the mosque through 3 or 4 floor houses, but it is possible to say that the centre of Edirne is a very flat area. Maybe if I could go up to the roof of those houses I could see it.
Aesthetics;
The interior and exterior of the mosque are harmoniously decorated with tiles and calligraphy. It would be a very accurate description to say that the brightness of the tiles catches the eye. It is also possible to say that it is quite harmonious with the best quality stones and marbles of the period. Personally, I was not satisfied with the new restoration because instead of trying to preserve the historical texture, it was aimed to feel as if it was newly built. I think this should not have been done.
Historical Significance;
Selimiye Mosque was built during the brightest period of the Ottoman Empire. It is a very good example of the power and splendour of that period. It also became the apple of the eye with the effect of being the capital of the same period. I am sure that the fact that it is the masterpiece of Mimar Sinan was a great body show as well as a gift.
I should also add that the mosque houses a piece of the Kaaba, which is considered sacred by Muslims.
UNESCO World Heritage:
On the website of the UNESCO National Commission for Turkiye, Selimiye is included in the World Heritage List within the borders of the Republic of Turkiye. Accepted in 2011, the mosque ranks 10th in the list of 21 items. I think this is a source of pride. You can access the website of UNESCO National Commission of Turkiye from here. I am sure you will see things you did not expect.
Edirne Selimiye Foundation Museum:
Edirne Selimiye Foundation Museum was opened in 1975 as a part of the Selimiye Mosque Complex. We saw that the museum is located in the madrasah in the courtyard of the complex. There are tools used during the construction of the Selimiye Mosque, documents related to the history and architecture of the mosque, edicts from the Ottoman period, calligraphy works, tiles and wax sculptures and animations of how they treated patients.
I especially liked the wax sculptures. It was even fun to make fun of some of them.
Of course, you can't make fun of everything. You just learn and move on, right?
Üç Şerefeli Mosque:
Üç Şerefeli Mosque and Selimiye are actually not that far from each other, or the reason why it felt like this to me may be because we travelled around Edirne on foot. It is possible to say that we went everywhere on foot except the Lausanne Monument. I think it is normal not to feel it in that hurry and habit.
The mosque was built by the Ottoman Sultan Murad II and dates from 1437-1447. There is no definite name for the architect of the mosque in the records and as a result of research, but the names of the architects Muslihuddin and Şehâbeddin Usta are quite compatible with the region and building type of the period.
Origin of the Name:
The reason why it is called Üç Şerefeli is that each minaret can be reached by separate stairs, which was not very common at that time. Such a rare feature immediately gives the mosque a name and identity.
Fortunately, there was no restoration in this mosque and we could easily visit its interior.
I even had the chance to take a photo that I liked very much. What more could I ask for?
Significance:
Üç Şerefeli Mosque is one of the important works of Ottoman Architecture. The mosque attracted my attention with its skilful use of classical Ottoman architectural elements such as dome, minaret and cheers.
The mosque is also one of the oldest mosques in Edirne, older than the Selimiye Mosque and an important part of the city's historical and cultural heritage.
Conclusion:
To tell the truth, Edirne seemed a bit empty to me after Istanbul. After the full history of Istanbul, it did not leave an impression on me except the work of Mimar Sinan, whom I love very much.
We could not enter the Synagogue, which I had visited before, because of the restoration. Apart from a few old buildings we came across on the way, there was nothing much related to my profession and interests.

Bugün bir süre uğramayacağımız İstanbul'a veda edip Edirne'ye doğru ilerliyoruz. Selimiye Camii, Selimiye Vakıf Müzesi ve Üç Şerefeli Camii bugünkü destinasyonlarımız arasında. Tabii ki bu destinasyonlar yürüme mesafesinde olduğundan dolayı yolda karşılaştığım binalar hakkında da birkaç fotoğraf eklemeye çalışacağım. İlk durağımız bir camii olacak. Meşhur Edirne Selimiye Camii.
Mimar Sinan'ın Eseri Selimiye Camii:
İnşaatını meşhur Mimar Sinan'ın üstlendiği bu camii kendisi 75 yaşında iken yapıldı. Hiç de erken bir yaş değil takdir edersiniz ki. 1568 yılında yapımına başlanılan camiinin inşaatı yaklaşık 8 yıl sürüyor ve 1575 yılında tamamlanıyor.
Biz gittiğimizde 450 yıllık camii restorasyondaydı ki bence bu kadar kötü kullanıma rağmen iyi dayanmış durumda. Kapak fotoğrafında ve hemen yukarıdaki fotoğraflarda restorasyonda olan minareleri rahatlıkla görebilirsiniz. Ayrıca bir de eklemeliyim ki bu camii meşhur Sinan Efendi'nin ustalık eseri olarak biliniyor.
Neden Selimiye?
İsim babasının Osmanlı Padişahlarından birisinin olabileceğini düşünmek zor olmasa gerek. Selim, evet, ama hangisi? Bu sorunun cevabı II. Selim. Kendisi biraz agresif birisiymiş. Camiide bize söylediklerine göre bir ters lale motifi var. Bu lale II. Selim'in agresifliğini ve hoyratlığını temsil etmek için yapılmış.
Restorasyon alanında olduğu için ne yazık ki lalenin fotoğrafını çekemedim, hatta kendim de göremedim ama paylaşılacak kadar güzel bir bilgi olduğunu düşünüyorum.
Ustalık Eseri:
Bu camiinin Mimar Sinan'ın ustalık eseri olarak anılmasının bir sebebi vardır elbet değil mi?
Mimari Sebepler;
Sekizgen Taban: Camiinin tabanının geleneksel kare yerine sekizgen şeklinde yapmış olması önemli detaylardan biri. Sol yukarıdaki resimde ne anlatmak istediğimi rahatlıkla görebilirsiniz. Üst kısım nasıl sekizgen ise aynı şekilde taban da öyleydi.
Yarı Kubbeler: Caminin ana kubbesini taşıyan sekiz payandaya (bir tür taşıyıcı, yapı destekleyici) yarı kubbeler eklemiş ve bu sayede kubbeye daha fazla destek sağlamış, caminin depremlere karşı dayanıklılığını artırmış. Yine, yukarıdaki fotoğrafta alt sağ tarafa yakın kısımda yarım kubberleri rahatlıkla görebilirsiniz.
Mermer Minareler: Selimiye Camii'nin minareleri, o dönemde Osmanlı'da ilk defa kullanılan mermerden yapılmış.
Akustik: Caminin akustik tasarımı oldukça başarılı. Bu sayede imamın sesi caminin her köşesine rahatlıkla duyulabiliyor. Ne yazık ki bütün camiideki akustiği test edemedik fakat bulunduğumuz orta kısımdaki ses düzeyi bana eğitmeni dinlediğim kulaklığı çıkarttırıp kulaklıksız rahatça dinletti.
Konum;
Mimar Sinan Camii'yi şehrin en yüksek noktasına inşa ediyor. Kendim de camiiyi şehrin gittiğim yerlerinden görebildim. Tabii bu durum yeni sanayileşmiş ve betonlaşmış şehir için geçerli değil. 3 ya da 4 katlı evlerin arasından camiiyi görmek o kadar da kolay değil fakat Edirne merkezin oldukça düz bir alan olduğunu söylemek mümkün. Belki o evlerin çatısına çıkabilseydim görebilirdim.
Estetik;
Camiinin içi ve dışı uyumlu bir şekilde çini ve kaligrefiler ile süslenmiş. Çinilerin parlaklığı göz alıyor demek oldukça doğru bir betimleme olur. Özellikle de dönemin en kaliteli taş ve mermerleri ile oldukça uyumlu olduğunu söylemek de mümkün. Sadece şahsen, yeni yapılan restorasyondan memnun kalmadım çünkü tarihi dokuyu korumaya çalışmak yerine sanki yeni yapılmış hissi amaçlanmış. Bence bunun yapılmaması gerekiyordu.
Tarihi Önemi;
Selimiye Camii, Osmanlı İmparatorluğu'nun en parlak döneminde inşaa edilmiş. O dönemin gücünün ve ihtişamının oldukça güzel bir örneği. Bir de yine aynı dönemin başkenti olmasının da etkisi ile gözbebeği olmuş. Mimar Sinan'ın ustalık eseri olması da yanında hediyesi harika bir gövde gösterisi olmuştur eminim ki.
Ayrıca eklemeliyim ki camii Müslümanlar tarafından kutsal olarak kabul edilen Kabe'den bir parçaya ev sahipliği yapıyor.
UNESCO Dünya Mirası:
UNESCO Türkiye Milli Komisyonu'nun internet sitesinde Türkiye Cumhuriyeti sınırları içerisinde bulunan Dünya Mirası Listesi'nin içerisinde bulunuyor Selimiye. 2011 yılında kabul edilen camii 21 maddelik listede 10. sırada. Bence bu tam bir gurur kaynağı. UNESCO Türkiye Milli Komisyonu'nun internet sitesine buradan ulaşabilirsiniz. Eminim beklemediğiniz şeyler göreceksinizdir.
Edirne Selimiye Vakıf Müzesi:
Edirne Selimiye Vakıf Müzesi, Selimiye Camii Külliyesi'nin bir parçası olarak 1975 yılında açılmış. Müzenin, külliyenin avlusunda yer alan medresede olduğunu gördük. Selimiye Camii'nin inşası sırasında kullanılan aletler, caminin tarihi ve mimarisi ile ilgili belgeler, Osmanlı dönemine ait fermanlar, hattatlık eserleri, çiniler ve balmumu heykelleri ile nasıl hastaları tedavi ettiklerine dair canlandırmalar bulunuyor.
Özellikle balmumu heykellerini çok sevdim. Hatta bazıları ile dalga geçmek oldukça eğlenceliydi.
Tabii ki her şeyle de dalga geçilmez. Sadece öğrenip geçersiniz değil mi?
Üç Şerefeli Camii:
Üç Şerefeli Camii ve Selimiye birbirlerine o kadar da uzak değiller aslında ya da bana böyle hissettirmesinin sebebi Edirne'yi yürüyerek gezdiğimiz için olabilir. Lozan Anıtı dışında her yere yürüyerek gittiğimizi söylemek mümkün. O acele ve alışkanlıkla hissetmemiş olmak normal bence.
Osmanlı padişahı II. Murad tarafından yaptırılan camiinin tarihi 1437–1447 yılları arasına tekabül etmekte. Kayıtlarda ve araştırmalar sonucu camiinin mimarı için kesin bir isim yok fakat Mimar Muslihuddin ve Şehâbeddin Usta'nın isimleri dönemin bölgesi ve yapı tipi ile gayet uyumlu.
İsminin Kökeni:
Üç Şerefeli denmesinin sebebi ise o dönemde çok sık rastlanmamakla birlikte her bir minaresine ayrı merdivenlerden çıkılabiliyor. Böyle nadir bir özellikle hemen camiiye bir isim ve kimlik kazandırıyor.
Neyse ki bu camiide herhangi bir restorasyon yoktu ve içini rahatlıkla gezebildik.
Hatta çok beğendiğim bir fotoğraf dahi çekme şansı buldum. Daha ne isteyebilirim ki?
Önemi:
Üç Şerefeli Camii, Osmanlı Mimarisi'nin önemli eserlerinden biri. Cami, kubbe, minare ve şerefe gibi klasik Osmanlı Mimari öğelerinin ustalıklı bir şekilde kullanılmasıyla dikkatimi oldukça çekti.
Ayrıca cami, Edirne'nin en eski camilerinden biri, Selimiye Camii'nden de eski ve şehrin tarihi ve kültürel mirasının önemli parçalarından biri.
Sonuç:
Ne yalan söyleyeyim, İstanbul'dan sonra Edirne bana biraz boş geldi. Dolu dolu İstanbul tarihinden sonra çok sevdiğim Mimar Sinan'ın eseri dışında bende bir etki bırakamadı.
Daha önceden ziyaret etmiş olduğum Sinagog'a yine restorasyon yüzünden giremedik. Yolda denk geldiğimiz birkaç eski bina dışında benim mesleğimle ve ilgi alanımla ilgili çok bir şey yoktu.

Oh I'm sorry you didn't find many impressive things there, but the Selimiye Mosque is definitely a masterpiece. Although I haven't visited it, I've seen a video about it and as you said, the acoustics are amazing.
Selimiye is really beautiful. But I cannot say the same thing for Edirne, unfortunately. And the acoustics were really good. It still was a good trip in Edirne.
