Walk with me through these red and yellow streets with dragons everywhere: Chinatown in Buenos Aires, Argentina

Hello my dear friends from Pinmapple and Hive, today I'm here again to bring you another corner of Buenos Aires that honors an oriental culture and it's Chinatown. I had a bit of a strange experience, because I went to this place at 10:30 in the morning and all the stores were closed, especially the food stores; I thought there would be more businesses open, maybe a coffee shop waiting for the public, but there were not. Even though there were two or three coffee shops ready for visitors, it was not the majority, so in the end you could not really choose where to have breakfast in Chinatown, because on top of that, those coffee shops were very Argentinean, hehe.

Besides, as I was telling you, the traditional Chinese food places, which is what this neighborhood has become so famous for, were closed at that time, and started to open at 12:30 noon, which was when I was leaving. This sector also offers us a very beautiful architecture corresponding to the culture in question.

Hola mis queridos amigos de Pinmapple y de Hive, hoy estoy nuevamente por aquñi para acercarles otro rincón de Buenos Aires que hace honor a una cultura oriental y se trata del Barrio Chino. Yo tuve una experiencia un poco extraña, porque fui a este lugar a las 10:30 de la mañana y estaban todos los locales cerrados, especialmente los de comida; pensé que iba a haber más negocios abiertos, quizás alguna cafetería esperando al público, pero no. Si bien sí habían dos o tres cafeterías funcionando listas para los visitantes, no era la mayoría, por lo que al final no se podía realmente elegir dónde desayunar dentro del barrio Chino, porque encima esas cafeterías, eran bien argentinas, jeje.

Además, como les comentaba los lugares de comida tradicional de la China, que es por lo que más se ha hecho tan famoso este barrio, estaban cerrados a esa hora, y empezaron a abrir a las 12:30 del mediodía que fue cuando yo me estaba yendo. Igualmente este sector nos ofrece una arquitectura muy bella correspondiente claro, a la cultura en cuestión.

Red, gold and yellow captivate the eye in those majestic ornaments that characterize the different Chinatowns of the world, as in New York and London, I could enjoy similar urban landscapes.

Beyond the gastronomic issue and its opening hours, I really enjoyed the visit. Maybe I would not even have eaten something, hehe, because the truth is that I do not usually eat when I go walking, only that day I just had not had breakfast.

De este modo, se puede ver el hermoso arco a la entrada del barrio, anunciando que estamos ante un giro urbano importante. El rojo, el dorado y el amarillo cautivan la vista en aquellos majestuosos ornamentos que caracterizan a los diferentes barrios chinos del mundo, pues en Nueva York y en Londres, pude disfrutar de paisajes urbanos similares.

Más allá del tema gastronómico y su horario de apertura, disfruté muchísimo la visita. Tal vez no hubiese ni comido algo, jeje, porque la verdad es que no suelo comer cuando voy paseando, solo que aquel día justo no había desayunado.

Llegué al Barrio Chino por lo que se llama el Paseo Beijing, que es un sendero precioso que se encuentra junto a una avenida. Está hacia el norte de Recoleta, ya llegando a la zona de Belgrano, y cuando empiezas a acercarte al Barrio Chino, se puede observar a lo lejos la presencia del ingreso al barrio, en donde hay una gran cantidad de turistas tomando fotos y observando sorprendidos el espectáculo estático y permanente de aquella decoración. A los costados de la entrada, hay dos estatuas de dragones; esta criatura mitológica, es muy importante en la cultura china; de hecho en el horóscopo chino tenemos al dragón (justo yo soy dragón, es mi signo, dragón de tierra) y es un un signo realmente muy bonito porque se considera que el dragón protege al pueblo; de hecho, van a ver varios dragones en las callecitas de este lugar, que son en verdad grandes esculturas.

I arrived at Chinatown through what is called the Paseo Beijing, which is a beautiful path that is located next to an avenue. It is towards the north of Recoleta, already reaching the area of Belgrano, and when you start to approach Chinatown, you can see in the distance the presence of the entrance to the neighborhood, where there are a lot of tourists taking pictures and watching in amazement the static and permanent spectacle of that decoration. At the sides of the entrance, there are two statues of dragons; this mythological creature is very important in Chinese culture; in fact in the Chinese horoscope we have the dragon (I am a dragon, it is my sign, earth dragon) and it is a really beautiful sign because it is considered that the dragon protects the people; in fact, you will see several dragons in the streets of this place, which are really great sculptures.

Recently they have made a new sector of Chinatown which I did not go to, because I found out about it after that, but I did walk through the two or three main blocks where you can enjoy a very peculiar public road, which has no point of comparison with other sectors of Buenos Aires. It invites you to take pictures quite often. I also liked to see the large number of murals in the area, in businesses, in the streets, in the houses, with paintings that represented something of their culture. I thought it was beautiful, because they really looked like paintings worthy of being in a museum.

Recientemente han hecho un sector nuevo del barrio chino al cual yo no fui, porque me enteré después de eso, pero sí caminé por las dos o tres cuadras principales en donde se puede disfrutar de una vía pública muy peculiar, que no tiene punto de comparación con otros sectores de Buenos Aires. La misma invita a tomar fotos con bastante frecuencia. Me gustó mucho además, ver la gran cantidad de murales en la zona, en negocios, en las calles, en las casas, con pinturas que representaban algo de su cultura. Me pareció algo precioso, porque realmente parecían cuadros dignos de estar en un museo.

On the negative side, I could tell you that near some markets, I smelled a lot of fish, something I did not like. It was a very strong smell, but I had already been to Chinatown in Buenos Aires about 10 years ago and I remembered it worse (referring to this smell), and I also had the memory that it was a little more messy, but nowadays it is truly a beauty that you must visit.

It is also interesting the fact that there are shops there that sell things from China, for example if you go to buy a can of soda or anything else, it will be written in Chinese; that at least to me, is something that fascinates me. Even the people who serve in the few stores that I found open, are from China, so some of them do not even speak Spanish very well.

Como negativo les podría decir que cerca a algunos mercados, sentí muchísimo olor a pescado, algo que no me gustó. Era un olor muy fuerte, pero yo ya había ido al Barrio Chino de Buenos Aires hace unos 10 años atrás y lo recordaba peor (haciendo referencia a este aroma), y también tenía el recuerdo de que era un poco más desordenado, pero actualmente es verdaderamente una belleza que sí que hay que visitar.

También es interesante el hecho de que allí hay locales que venden cosas de China, por ejemplo si vas a ir a comprarte una latita de gaseosa o cualquier cosa, va a estar escrito en chino; eso por lo menos a mí, es algo que me fascina. Incluso las personas que atienden en los pocos locales que yo encontré abiertos, son de China, por lo que algunos ni siquiera hablan muy bien el español.

You will see that this is the second time I go to this neighborhood when visiting Buenos Aires, so I clearly recommend it. It depends a lot on the tastes of each one, but I doubt that anyone can say that it is not worth visiting, as it is something unique in the great capital of Argentina.

Verán que es la segunda vez que voy a este barrio al visitar Buenos Aires, por lo que claramente se los recomiendo. Depende mucho de los gustos de cada uno, pero dudo que alguien pueda decir que no merece la pena visitarlo, pues es algo único en la gran capital de Argentina.
