The million-dollar question: What am I doing in Vietnam?

Ladies and gentlemen, volunteering went wrong for the first time in my life, and in a destination that was completely unknown to me.

When I say “absolutely,” I'm not exaggerating. I know NOTHING about Southeast Asia. After this experience, I even feel like going back to my university and applying to teach a course on “Geography of World Spaces,” because I had an amazing professor who had an admirable command of world statistics. But... did he or anyone else in the Geography program tell me ANYTHING REAL about Southeast Asia?

Whatever I read or heard, I forgot. My mind is blank, my dear friends. I'm rethinking the trip and constantly wondering if I shouldn't just head back to Europe. Even Argentina has crossed my mind.

Anyway... let me introduce you to Ho Chi Minh.

La pregunta del millón: ¿Qué hago en Vietnam?

Señoras y señores, el voluntariado salió mal, por primera vez en mi vida y en un destino absolutamente desconocido para mi.

Cuando digo “absolutamente”, no exagero. No conozco NADA del sudeste asiático. Después de esta experiencia hasta me dan ganas de volver a mi Universidad y presentarme como docente en la cátedra de “Geografía de los Espacios Mundiales”, pues tuve un profesor espectacular que dominaba la estadística del mundo de una manera admirable. Pero… ¿él o alguien en la carrera de Geografía, me contó ALGO REAL del sudeste asiático?

Lo que sea que leí o escuché, me lo olvidé. Estoy en blanco amigos queridos, estoy rearmando el viaje y preguntándome constantemente si no tengo que pegarme la vuelta a Europa, e incluso Argentina se me ha pasado por la cabeza.

En fin… les presento a Ho Chi Minh.

It turns out that Vietnam is a very inexpensive country, and since I was planning to spend a whole month volunteering in Thailand without paying for accommodation, the first thing I thought was: How can I save as much money as possible?

I asked other travelers and searched the internet, and Vietnam came up first on the list. I looked for some more information and well... yes, it was the right choice at the time.

Between the north, center, and south, I chose the south. I booked my flight to Ho Chi Minh City, a city that seemed to be a normal size and promised some nature. I paid for good accommodation in a shared room, as I was terrified, and entrusted myself to God.

I don't think I had ever felt so confident in placing my life in God's hands (Energy, Universe, or whatever you feel this omnipotent force is called).

I arrived in Ho Chi Minh City.

Resulta que Vietnam es un país muy económico, y dado que yo pensaba pasar un mes entero en el voluntariado de Tailandia sin pagar alojamiento, lo primero que pensé fue: ¿Cómo hago para ahorrar la mayor cantidad de dinero posible?

Averigüé con otros viajeros y busqué en internet y Vietnam apareció primero en la lista. Busqué algo más de info y bueno… sí, era el indicado para el momento.

Entre el norte, centro y sur, elegí el sur. Saqué mi vuelo a Ho Chi Minh, una ciudad que aparentaba tener un tamaño normal y que prometía algo de naturaleza. Me pagué un buen alojamiento en una habitación compartida, ya que estaba aterrorizada, y me encomendé a Dios.

Creo que nunca antes había sentido depositar de esta manera mi vida en las manos de Dios (Energía, Universo o como sientas que se llama esta fuerza omnipotente).

Llegué a Ho Chi Minh.

Lights, noise... constant: “taxi, taxi taxi; money, money, money, SIM card, SIM card.” Hundreds, if not thousands, of people around, generating a DEAFENING cloud of sound.

Ho Chi Minh City, in the country that showed photos of dreamlike landscapes on the internet, as if suspended in the middle of the sea.

The first two days I got a little lost and ended up going to less traveled parts of the city. This way, I could see the pollution that resulted from the constant economic activities of the huge urban center.

Ten million people and seven million motorcycles could only generate what even consuming half a liter of water as a tourist generates: TRASH. According to the website vietnam.vn Ho Chi Minh City remains the most populous city in the country, with 14,002,598 inhabitants (according to the mid-term census of 2024).

Luces, ruido… constantes: “taxi, taxi taxi; money, money, money, SIM card, SIM card”. Cientos de personas sino miles, alrededor, generando una nube de sonido ENSORDECEDORA.

Ho Chi Minh, en el país que por internet mostraba fotos de paisajes de ensueño, como suspendidos en medio del mar.

Los dos primeros días me perdí un poco y terminé yendo a partes poco transitadas de la ciudad. De esta manera, pude ver la contaminación que había, resultante de las constantes actividades económicas del enorme núcleo urbano que tiene.

10 millones de personas y 7 millones de motos no podrían sino generar lo que hasta consumir medio litro de agua siendo turista genera: BASURA. Según la página vietnam.vn Ho Chi Minh sigue siendo la ciudad más poblada del país, con 14.002.598 habitantes (según el censo de mitad de período de 2024).

Trash everywhere, in the river, in the streets (although for that number of people, there is more cleanliness than you would expect).

However, there are parts of the city that you will fall in love with:

The area around Notre Dame Cathedral, currently under reconstruction, enchants visitors with a mall, squares, and a book promenade, approximately one block long, lined with bookstores and cafes that invite you to have a drink while you read.

The District area, with the prominent Nguyen everywhere, offers the best international and high-end stores, such as Louis Vuitton and others like it.

The city's squares surprise you with people practicing dance or sports, the Central Market offers dance competitions, and its cafes share delicious Vietnamese coffee.

Basura por todos lados, en el río, en las calles (aunque para esa cantidad de gente, hay más limpieza de la que se esperaría).

Sin embargo, hay partes de la ciudad que enamoran:

La zona alrededor de la Basílica de Notre Dame, en este momento en reconstrucción, encanta con un Mall, con plazas y también con el paseo del libro, hecho de una cuadra aproximadamente, repleta de tiendas de libros y cafeterías que te invitan a tomar algo mientras lees.

La zona del Distrito el con el destacado Nguyen que está por todos lados, ofrece las mejores tiendas con presencia internacional, y de alta categoría, como Luis Vuitton y otras similares.

Las plazas de la ciudad sorprenden con personas practicando danza o deportes, el Mercado Central ofrece competencias de baile, sus cafeterías comparten el delicioso café vietnamita.

Ho Chi Minh City is a huge city, and although it is very dynamic, the noise allows you to find rest and lets you suspend yourself in time for a moment.

For those adventurers who want something new, completely different from the
Western lifestyle, I say that Ho Chi Minh City is an option to discover that there is another way of life in the world.

Ho Chi Minh como tal, es una grandísima ciudad, y aunque su dinámica es intensa, en tanto ruido permite encontrar el descanso, te deja suspenderte por un momento en el tiempo.

Para aquellos aventureros que quieren algo nuevo, completamente diferente al
y estilo de vida Occidental, les digo que Ho Chi Minh es una opción para enterarse que en el mundo, hay otra manera de vivir.

In addition, its extremely low prices are a real attraction if you are on a tight budget but want an exceptional travel experience, as for very little money you can even enjoy guided tours. I'm talking about paying around $18 for a full-day tour with food and water included in the price.

Además, sus precios sumamente bajos, son un atractivo real si estás con un presupuesto ajustado, pero si al mismo tiempo querés una experiencia de viaje excepcional, ya que por poco dinero podés disfrutar incluso de excursiones con guías turísticos, y me refiero a pagar unos 18 dólares una excursión de día completo con comida y agua dentro del precio.
