A Wednesday Hike - From Son Bou to Santo Tomás: The Cami de Cavalls Trail in Menorca

Hello, dear friends! Today I’m sharing a hike with you after quite a while. It’s not that I haven’t been hiking, but I wasn’t focused on taking photos. Anyway, this trail is part of a path that circles the island of Menorca, and I thought it was a great opportunity to bring a little bit of sports and physical activity back to the Hive community.

Una caminata de miércoles - Tramo Son Bou a Santo Tomás: Cami de Cavalls de Menorca

¡Hola, queridos amigos! Hoy les traigo una caminata después de mucho tiempo. No es que no haga caminatas, sino que no estaba enfocada en tomar fotos. De todas maneras, este sendero forma parte de un camino que da la vuelta a la isla de Menorca y me pareció una gran oportunidad para introducir nuevamente un poquito de deporte y actividad física a la comunidad de Hive.

As I mentioned, this time I’m going to share a section of the Camí de Cavalls (the Horse Trail). It’s a route that has been walked in Menorca for almost as long as anyone can remember; in the past, people used to circle the island on horseback, and that tradition continues even today, although it’s also commonly done by bike and on foot.

Como les comentaba, en esta ocasión voy a estar compartiendo un tramo del Camí de Cavalls (el Sendero de los Caballos). Es un recorrido que se hace en Menorca casi históricamente; antiguamente se daba la vuelta a la isla a caballo y esa tradición se sigue manteniendo incluso hoy, aunque también se hace mucho en bicicleta y a pie.

In this case, I walked the section connecting Son Bou and Santo Tomás. I walked part of the way along the beach and part along the trail, which is very well marked. Originally, the trail has sections that cross the beach; the sand is quite beautiful, and along the way you can see yellow arrows indicating the path to follow, and orange arrows indicating where the trail doesn’t go but where it could. You can see lots of people doing it in sections every day, depending on their fitness level. Tourists often take on this trail because it’s well-known locally and nationally, since Menorca is part of the Balearic Islands and is a designated Biosphere Reserve.

En este caso, hice el tramo que conecta Son Bou con Santo Tomás. Lo hice un poco por la playa y otra parte por el sendero, que está muy bien señalizado. Originalmente, el camino tiene tramos que atraviesan la playa; la arena es bastante bonita y se puede ver a lo largo del trayecto cómo hay flechas amarillas que indican por dónde sigue, y las flechas anaranjadas que indican por dónde no es el sendero pero por donde sí podría ser. Se puede ver a diario a muchísima gente haciéndolo por tramos, de acuerdo al entrenamiento que cada persona tenga. Incluso los turistas toman parte de este sendero porque es reconocido a nivel local y nacional, ya que Menorca es parte de las Islas Baleares y estamos hablando de una isla que es Reserva de la Biosfera.

Of course, the most striking feature of this walk is the water, which is completely crystal-clear. As you make your way along this stretch, you can see different shades of blue in the sea, ranging from turquoise to sky blue. The color of the sand also changes, and in some places you can even see patches with tiny pink specks, which is related to the northern part of the island where there are indeed beaches with orange or pink sand.

I walked this stretch for two hours: one hour to get to Santo Tomás and another hour back. Halfway along the path, there’s a nude beach where people were already enjoying the start of spring. There’s also a section that takes you through a beautiful meadow, full of greenery, flowers, and rolling hills. You can see houses in the distance, and there are some traditional wooden gates that you have to open as you walk to keep moving forward.

Por supuesto, en esta caminata lo que más destaca es el agua, que es completamente cristalina. A medida que se va avanzando en este tramo, se pueden ver diferentes tonos de azul en el mar, pasando al turquesa y al celeste. El color de la arena también va variando e incluso se pueden ver partes que tienen como unos pequeños restos rosados, lo que se relaciona con el norte de la isla donde hay efectivamente playas con arena anaranjada o rosa.

En este tramo estuve caminando dos horas: una hora hasta llegar a Santo Tomás y otra hora de vuelta. En el medio del camino hay una playa nudista en donde ya había gente estrenando la primavera. También hay una parte que se tiene que hacer por un prado que es precioso, que está repleto de verde, de flores y colinas. Se ven casas a lo lejos y hay unas puertas de madera típicas que tenés que ir abriendo a medida que vas caminando para poder seguir avanzando.

This little stretch of the Camí de Cavalls is truly a paradise, and I imagine the rest of the trail must also be beautiful to see and enjoy. Walking here makes you feel as though the island is telling you its story step by step, amid the scent of the sea and the sound of the wind in the grass. It’s one of those places where there’s no need to rush, because the landscape itself invites you to stop and look around. Without a doubt, it’s an experience that recharges your energy and leaves you eager to keep discovering every corner of this map.

Es un paraíso realmente lo que se vive en esta partecita del Camí de Cavalls, y estimo que el resto del camino también debe ser muy bello de ver y de disfrutar. Caminar por acá te hace sentir que la isla te va contando su historia paso a paso, entre el olor al mar y el sonido del viento en el pasto. Es de esos lugares donde no hace falta correr, porque el paisaje mismo te pide que te detengas a mirar. Sin dudas, una experiencia que te renueva la energía y te deja con ganas de seguir descubriendo cada rincón de este mapa.
