A Getaway to Sitges and Rediscovering Myself

Sitges—that place I carry with me in photos, though not many. That place that somehow embraces, soothes, and relaxes me. A large town or a small city. I really love those places that can’t be easily defined, that straddle the line between categories, because they’re so unique that it’s hard to pigeonhole them.

One of the most alternative, gay-friendly, and welcoming places in Spain when it comes to diversity. I’ve left Menorca for the first time in three months, and I feel free; I feel the laughter and the structure fade away as I walk through these streets.

Una escapada a Sitges y el reencuentro conmigo

Sitges, ese lugar que traigo con fotos, pocas. Ese sitio que de alguna manera abraza, calma, relaja. Un pueblo grande o una ciudad pequeña. Cómo me gustan esos sitios que no pueden definirse muy bien, que están en el límite de las categorías, porque son tan particulares que no es fácil encasillarlos.

Uno de los puntos de España más alternativos, más gay friendly, más amables con lo diverso. He salido de Menorca por primera vez en 3 meses y siento libertad, siento las risas y la estructura esfumarse a medida que camino por estas calles.

Going from Ibiza to Menorca was a big change. There’s no direct flight to Ibiza from my new island, so I found myself somewhat forced to look for a new destination—somewhere affordable that didn’t involve extremely long layovers, a place that would feel like home. And that’s when Sitges came up, for the third time.

I’ve come for a few days and stopped by the statue that has become my favorite in Europe. That silhouette gazing out at the Mediterranean, looking out at a small coastline yet brimming with life, color, and acceptance.

De Ibiza a Menorca fue un gran cambio. El vuelo a Ibiza directo de mi nueva isla no existe, y me vi algo arrinconada a buscar un nuevo destino. Un lugar accesible económicamente y que no implicara larguísimas escalas. Un lugar que fuese hogar. Y apareció Sitges, por tercera vez.

He venido por unos días y he pasado por la estatua que se ha convertido en mi preferida de Europa. Esa silueta mirando al Mediterráneo, mirando a una costa pequeña pero repleta de vida, de colores, de aceptación.

Its streets are of average width, and Sitges offers a seaside promenade that’s hard to match, as the town coexists with coves, hills, and hotels, allowing you to enjoy a constantly changing landscape within just a few kilometers—one that truly reflects its defiance of categorization.

I came here once to get away from Barcelona; I came here for a lecture by Lain García Calvo; and I’ve come here once again to escape Menorca. But… you know what? Being here, I’ve realized that I wasn’t looking to escape—I was actually looking forward to being in Sitges. I chose Sitges; I chose this coast again—that silhouette of the chapel standing out in the distance, telling us that this isn’t just another place, but a place brimming with culture and diversity.

Sus calles tienen un tamaño normal y Sitges brinda un paseo marítimo junto al mar muy difícil de igualar, pues coexiste el pueblo, con calas, con montes, con hoteles, permitiéndote disfrutar en pocos kilómetros de un paisaje por demás cambiante, muy resonante con su falta de categorización.

Aquí vine una vez para escaparme de Barcelona, aquí vine a una conferencia de Lain García Calvo, aquí he venido una vez más para escapar de Menorca. Pero… ¿saben algo? Estando acá me he dado cuenta que no buscaba escaparme, estar en Sitges me hacía ilusión. Yo elegí Sitges, yo elegí esta costa otra vez, esa silueta de aquella capilla que a lo lejos se destaca, diciéndonos que este no es un lugar más, que es un lugar repleto de cultura y de variedad.

I’ve been lucky—and I’m grateful for it. I was looking to sleep alone in a nice room, and I’ve managed to do just that. Once again—and I don’t mean to brag—I’ve been able to give myself this gift. As I grow, as I continue on this journey of life, as I learn, and as I choose today to embrace tremendous discomfort. It’s hard for me, but I’ve decided to stay and, at least on my part, not to throw in any more unexpected twists.

He tenido suerte, la agradezco, buscaba dormir sola en una buena habitación, y lo he conseguido, una vez más, lejos de alardear, he podido hacerme este regalo. Mientras crezco, mientras camino más en este viaje de la vida, mientras aprendo y mientras hoy elijo habitar una tremenda incomodidad. Me está costando, pero he decidido quedarme y al menos de mi parte, no ofrecer más giros inesperados.

The conservative, the static, the closed-off—these are all part of my life today, in my day-to-day existence, while my whole being screams: FREEDOM. There I am, challenging myself day after day to express what I feel. And there’s something I love about this: having the courage to accept the challenge.

Lo conservador, lo estático, lo cerrado, están hoy en mi vida, en mi día a día, mientras todo mi ser grita: LIBERTAD. Ahí estoy, desafiándome día a día a expresar lo que siento. Y hay algo que me encanta de esto: tener el coraje de aceptar el desafío.
