Era domingo por la mañana, luego de una buena taza de café bien cargado y una arepa asada con bastante mantequilla y suero de leche, nos fuimos a caminar un rato por la finca.

It was Sunday morning, after a good cup of strong coffee and a roasted arepa with plenty of butter and buttermilk, we went for a walk around the farm.

Era hora de cosechar los plátanos. Mis primos y mi tío llevaban varias maras, sacos y machetes, sobre una carrucha arreada por una mula. Yo iba cabalgando, a paso lento, sobre mi yegua “Princesa”.

It was time to harvest the bananas. My cousins and my uncle carried several gangs, sacks and machetes, on a cart driven by a mule. I was riding, at a slow pace, on my mare “Princess”.

Algunos eran para la venta y otros para nuestro consumo. Me encantaba acompañarlos porque así aprovechaba de recolectar algunas frutas y disfrutar de la naturaleza.

Some were for sale and others for our consumption. I loved accompanying them because that way I took advantage of collecting some fruits and enjoying nature.

Al llegar al platanal, mis primos empezaron a cortar los racimos. Mientras que mi tío iba organizando en las maras, los que eran para el consumo de la casa y en los sacos los que eran para la venta.

Upon reaching the banana plantation, my cousins began to cut the bunches. While my uncle was organizing in the gangs, those that were for the consumption of the house and in the sacks those that were for sale.

Yo, en cambio, estaba con mi cesta recogiendo ciruelas, cerezas y guayabitas silvestres. Aproveché de recoger algunas flores que le encantan a mi tía Lucía.

I, on the other hand, was with my basket picking plums, cherries, and wild guayabitas. I took advantage of picking some flowers that my aunt Lucía loves.

Mi tío me llamó para que eligiera, como de costumbre, el racimo que iba a poner a madurar. Sabe que me encanta el pastel de plátano que mi tía prepara, pero ésta vez él quería que yo lo preparara, porque ya se acercaba la Semana Santa.

My uncle called me to choose, as usual, the bunch that was going to ripen. He knows that I love the banana cake that my aunt makes, but this time he wanted me to make it, because Holy Week was approaching.

Al llegar a la casa, le di a mi tía las flores, me coloqué un sombreo de cogollo que estaba colgado en la pared, recordé el eslogan de la propaganda de Natuchips y sin pensarlo mucho, dije: Éste es el plátano más bonito que he cosechado. Todos nos pusimos a reír de inmediato, mientras disfrutábamos de las anécdotas de mi tío.

When I got home, I gave my aunt the flowers, I put on a bud hat that was hanging on the wall, I remembered the Natuchips advertising slogan and without much thought, I said: This is the most beautiful banana, beautiful that I have harvested. We all immediately laughed as we enjoyed my uncle's anecdotes.
