Visiting María Rodríguez Boulevard: a tribute to the Mermaid of Cumaná (Eng - Esp)
Greetings, fellow travelers! I hope you are having a wonderful day with your loved ones. I am delighted to share my visit to the newly inaugurated María Rodríguez Boulevard. Named after the distinguished artist from Cumaná—a dancer, singer, and composer known as the "Siren of Cumaná"—this recreational space was built to honor her legacy. It occupies the former site of the Fernández de Zerpa Plaza. Fernández de Zerpa was one of the founders of Cumaná; after the settlement had been destroyed several times in the 16th century by the indigenous people inhabiting this part of eastern Venezuela, he refounded the city in 1569. Structures, roads, and institutions were established, fostering the growth of the "Firstborn of the Americas"—the first city founded on the mainland by the Spanish.
The new boulevard, named after this celebrated artist—who was known for adorning her outfits with hibiscus flowers and butterflies—utilizes the space of the former plaza. (The theater at the Peñalver Cultural Complex also bears her name in her honor.) The boulevard covers a large area, beginning at the traffic circle near the police station; from there, a caico tile walkway extends outward, featuring a beautiful palm tree surrounded by various plants in its center. Upon crossing the avenue, the path continues, showcasing a color scheme of yellow, blue, and green. The plaza is equipped with benches, trash receptacles, and wooden shelters for shade, while beautiful planters line the walkway. On the day of my visit, workers were watering and planting greenery to create a lovely natural setting. Branching off the main walkway are several paths leading to different points and the central area, which features a pedestal displaying a beautiful hibiscus sculpture—a highly realistic design that served as María Rodríguez's signature motif on her costumes.
Saludos amigos viajeros, espero que tenga un excelente día en unión de sus seres queridos, me siento feliz de compartir mi visita al recién inaugurado Bulevar María Rodríguez, quien fue una destacada artista cumanesa, bailarina cantante y compositora, conocida como la Sirena de Cumaná, en honor a su legado, se construyó este espacio recreativo donde anteriormente quedaba la plaza Fernández de Zerpa, el cual fue uno de los fundadores de Cumaná, tras haber sido destruida varias veces por los indígenas que habitaban esta parte del oriente venezolano, en el siglo XVI, en el año 1569 Fernández de Zerpa, refunda la ciudad y se crean estructuras, camimos e instituciones, que promueven el crecimiento de la primogénita del continente americano, hasta convertirse en la primera ciudad fundada en tierra firme por los españoles.
Utilizando los espacios de esta plaza, se inauguró el bulevar que lleva el nombre de esta destacada artista cumanesa, que solía colocar en sus atuendos cayenas y mariposas, en su honor se colocó el nombre al teatro del complejo cultural Peñalver; el bulevar abarca un amplio espacio e inicia en la redoma cercana a la sede de la policía, desde allí se extiende un pasillo de caico y en el centro tiene una hermosa palmera con varias plantas alrededor, al cruzar la avenida se extiende un pasillo que combina los colores amarillo azul y verde, la plaza cuenta con bancos papeleras, casas de madera para protegerse del sol y en el pasillo se encuentran las hermosas jardineras, el día de mi visita los trabajadores estaban regando y sembrando las plantas para crear un hermoso entorno natural, a lo largo del pasillo principal hay varios senderos que conducen a diferentes puntos y el área principal, un pedestal donde se encuentra una hermosa cayena, la cual tiene un diseño muy realista y era el sello de María Rodríguez en cada atuendo.
Along the sides, very close to the hibiscus flower sculpture, are the benches with their respective overhead shelters; the roof is made of wood and finished in green, while the benches feature light and dark gray tones. Nearby stands a trash bin with a lovely handcrafted wooden design, accompanied by various plants and the walkway's characteristic striped patterns. A beautiful hibiscus flower is painted on the ground in the center, serving as the boulevard's emblematic figure and the signature motif of artist María Rodríguez. The walkway's concrete benches feature curved edges and bases striped in yellow, gray, and blue. The next photograph shows part of the hibiscus design and a bench beneath its shelter; the long walkway combines stripes of various colors, with the hibiscus being the most prominent feature. The image also captures the length of the path and the benches lining both sides, alongside planters that come in various shapes, including circular and square designs.
En los laterales muy cerca de la escultura de la flor de cayena, se encuentran los bancos con sus respectivas casillas, el techo es de madera y está cubierto con una capa de color verde, el banco es de color gris claro y oscuro, a continuación la papelera con un lindo diseño artesanal elaborada con madera, también al lado de ella varias plantas y las características franjas de este paseo; en el centro hay una hermosa flor de cayena pintada en el piso ya que esta es la figura emblemática y representativa del bulevar y el sello personal del artista María Rodríguez, los bancos ubicados en la caminería son de concreto con forma rizada en los bordes y en la base tienen una franjas amarillo gris y azul, en la siguiente fotografía se aprecia parte de la cayena y el banco debajo de la casilla, el pasillo es largo y combina franjas de diferentes colores, la figura que más resalta es la cayena, también se aprecia la extensión del pasillo y los bancos ubicados a cada lado, las jardineras tienen diferentes diseños hay circulares y cuadradas.
Moving toward the center, we get a closer look at the hibiscus flower and the back of the sculpture resting on a white pedestal; the edges feature a rock structure and various plants arranged in a horseshoe shape, with the pedestal itself set upon a square white base. From the front, one can see the petals, the pistil, and a leaf, while another view reveals the surrounding lines and Ixora plants positioned on either side. The name of the plaza—a tribute to this distinguished artist—is displayed on the front of the sculpture. The sight of the sculpture combined with the various colored lines on the ground creates a beautiful contrast, making this boulevard a striking and attractive space for visitors; the afternoon is the recommended time to enjoy the area, as there is little shade and the city's sun is intense.

Avanzando hacia el centro, vemos más de cerca la cayena y la parte posterior de la escultura que reposa en un pedestal blanco, por los bordes tiene una estructura de roca y varias plantas, es una especie de herradura y el pedestal reposa en una base cuadrada también de color blanco, en la parte frontal se observan sus pétalos el pistilo y una hoja, en otra vista tenemos las líneas circundantes y las plantas de Ixora ubicadas a los lados, en la parte frontal de las cultura se lee el nombre de la plaza, que es un homenaje a esta destacada artista y se resalta que funcionaba las Plaza Fernández de de Zerpa, la vista de la escultura y las diferentes líneas de colores en el suelo crean un hermoso contraste que hacen de este bulevar un espacio llamativo y atractivo para los visitantes, la hora recomendada para disfrutar estos espacios es en la tarde ya que hay pocos árboles y la intensidad del sol en la ciudad es fuerte.
