Santa Cruz Church, Anzoátegui State, and its striking mixed-Baroque design (Eng - Esp)
Hello fellow travelers! It is a pleasure to greet you and share my visit to the Santa Cruz Church in Anzoátegui state. It is located in the center of Puerto La Cruz, very close to Paseo Colón; while running errands in the area, I spotted the church, and its design and towers—which resemble castle turrets—caught my eye. Situated on Bolívar Street, diagonally across from 5 de Julio Avenue, it sits in a mixed commercial and residential zone. Several businesses operate next to the church, and the building stands out among the surrounding structures thanks to its distinctive design, featuring numerous steps that elevate it and a white perimeter fence. On the other side of the church lies the parish office—a green and light-yellow structure that echoes the color of the church's own walls. The doors are made of wood, with carved panels on each leaf, and the María Auxiliadora Chapel is located alongside the parish office; the wall next to the doors is clad in ceramic tiles.
Hola amigos viajeros, es un placer saludarles y compartir mi visita a la iglesia Santa Cruz en el estado Anzoátegui, se encuentra ubicada en el centro de Puerto la Cruz muy cerca del paseo Colón, mientras realizaba diligencia por esta zona vi la iglesia y me llamó la atención su diseño y las torres, que parecen garitas de un castillo, se localiza en la calle Bolívar diagonal a la avenida 5 de Julio, en una zona comercial y residencial, al lado de la iglesia funcionan varios establecimientos comerciales y destaca entre las variadas construcciones por su peculiar diseño, numerosos escalones que la ubican en la parte alta y reja perimetral de color blanco, al otro lado de la iglesia se encuentra el despacho parroquial, es una estructura de color verde con amarillo claro, similar al color que tiene la iglesia en sus paredes, las puertas son de madera con cuadros tallados en cada una de las hojas, además del despacho parroquial se ubica la capilla María Auxiliadora, la pared al lado de las puertas está cubierta con cerámica.
The church façade features a lovely design; I particularly liked the central nave and the triangular cornice. It also displays a central cross and three black LED light fixtures. At the top of the nave sits a circular window with stained glass, while beneath the cornice are seven semicircular windows framed by raised white borders. Below these lies the main entrance—shaped like a semi-arch—along with a semicircular archway that rises about a meter from the door, aligning with the mezzanine and the white columns.
At the base, there is a low wall formed by white chaguaramo palm-style structures that double as planters. The side doors are rectangular but share the same design as the main entrance; all three are double doors decorated with gold lines, and the cross motif is repeated on the lower section of the doors. As I mentioned earlier, the towers resemble sentry boxes, featuring a chaguaramo-style wall followed by semicircular windows—three on each side of the tower. At the top, there are two cross motifs situated between two high-relief cornices, similar to those found on the central nave; a closer view reveals the main entrance, along with its details and ornamentation. Next, one can see the cornices, towers, and handrails that provide support while ascending the steps—which, according to a local resident, number approximately eighty. I had hoped to see the interior, but no services were being held that day; nevertheless, I really liked the design and the color scheme of light yellow, dark yellow, and white. Further on, the window of one of the towers is visible in detail, while the other tower features only a white, high-relief circle; the handrails flanking the stairs and the planters situated beneath the columns are also visible. The structure is enclosed by a white perimeter fence with vertical bars, and the entrance is a wide, rectangular doorway. Finally, there is a view of the steps starting at the sidewalk and leading up to the church's main entrance; flanking the church are long perimeter walls—white on one side and yellow on the other.
La fachada de la iglesia tiene un bonito diseño, me gustó la nave central, la cornisa triangular, además tiene una cruz en el centro y tres lámparas led de color negro, en la punta de la nave se ubica una ventana circular con vidrios coloridos, debajo de la cornisa, siete ventanas de forma semicircular con los bordes en alto relieve de color blanco, a continuación se ubica la puerta principal que tiene forma de semi arco, también una en arco de medio punto, que se eleva desde la puerta hasta aproximadamente un metro, allí coincide con la mezzanina y las columnas de color blanco.
En la parte inferior se ubica un pequeño muro formado por chaguaramos de color blanco, que a su vez sirven de jardineras, las puertas laterales son rectangulares pero con el mismo diseño de la puerta principal, las tres puertas tienen dos hojas cada una y decoradas con líneas de color dorado, la figura de la cruz se repite también en la parte inferior de la puerta, las torres como lo mencioné al principio, tienen forma de garita, un muro de chaguaramos y a continuación las ventanas semicirculares, hay tres en cada lado de la torre; en la parte superior tiene dos figuras de cruz que se encuenran entre dos cornisas de alto relieve, similares a las que tiene la nave central, en una vista más cercana observamos la puerta principal, sus detalles y decoraciones, luego vemos, las cornisas las torres y las barandas para sostenerse mientras se sube la escalera, de acuerdo a la información de un residente de la zona, tiene aproximadamente 80 escalones, quería quedarme para conocer su interior pero ese día no iban a realizar servicio, igual me gustó mucho su diseño y la combinación de colores amarillo claro, oscuro y blanco, a continuación se observa en detalle la ventana de una de las torres y la siguiente solo tiene un círculo de color blanco en alto relieve, se aprecian los pasamanos al lado de las escaleras y la jardinera ubicadas debajo de las columnas, cuenta además con una cerca perimetral de color blanco, los tubos están ubicados de forma vertical, la puerta de entrada es rectangular y muy amplia, luego tenemos una vista de las escaleras que inician en la acera y se extiende hasta la puerta principal de la iglesia, a los lados de la iglesia hay una larga pared perimetral de color blanco en un lado y el otro es de color amarillo.
The main entrance at the top is decorated with a cross and several gold-colored lines resembling stalks of grain; below, the door features two rectangles and two squares, with two additional rectangular sections extending downward from them. An informational poster regarding church services is displayed on one of the door panels, and white light fixtures can be seen beneath the mezzanine and near the columns.
On one side, we see a wall lined with chaguaramo palms stretching from the second tower to the main entrance; on the other side, there is another wall of chaguaramos extending to the next tower. This area also features small gardens and a large yellow wall. The next photograph shows the stairs and their varying color tones, ranging from light beige to dark gray with various shades in between. The tower is divided into three sections; the lower section contains three semicircular windows with white grilles. The final photograph shows one of the towers alongside the central nave and its beautiful decorative features: the mezzanine, the cornice, a figure atop the tower, the lower windows, and the tower's corners and edges, which are outlined in raised white lines. I really liked the church's design; its location on high ground gives it an imposing appearance as you approach along the avenue, and I hope to see the interior design in the future.
La puerta principal en la parte superior está decorada con una cruz y varias líneas de color dorado que parecen ser espigas, luego en la puerta hay dos rectángulos, dos cuadrados y a partir de estos, dos más que se extienden hasta abajo, en una de las hojas de las puertas hay un afiche informativo sobre los servicios de la iglesia, también se observan las lámparas de color blanco ubicadas debajo de la mezzanina y cerca de las columnas.
En uno de los lados observamos el muro de conchaguaramos, que va desde la segunda torre hasta la entrada principal, en el otro lateral vemos nuevamente un muro formado por chaguaramos que se extiende hasta la siguiente torre, en esta zona también hay pequeños jardines y se observa el paredón de color amarillo, en la siguiente fotografía observamos las escaleras y los diferentes tonos de colores que tiene y van desde el beige claro, hasta gris oscuro con variaciones; la torre está dividida en tres partes y en la inferior se encuentran tres ventanas semi circulares con rejas de color blanco, en la última fotografía se observa una de las torres con la nave central y sus hermosos diseños decorativos: La mezzanina, la cornisa, una figura ubicada en la parte superior de la torre así como las ventanas en la parte de abajo, las esquinas y los bordes de las torres están cubiertos con una línea blanca en alto relieve, me gustó el diseño de esta iglesia y al estar ubicada en una zona alta se ve imponente desde que avanzas por la avenida, espero en un futuro poder conocer su diseño interior.
