Sanctuary of Our Lady of Altagracia; a modern-style building in the city center (Eng - Esp)
Greetings, fellow travelers around the world; I hope you are in good health and having an excellent, blessed day. I am happy to share my visit to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Altagracia. For several months, I had wanted to see the church's interior design, but it was closed whenever I passed by; I had only taken photos of the exterior—which is quite beautiful, by the way, and stands out for its distinctive triangular bell tower featuring a plaque on the back and windows along the sides. This tower is situated in front of the church itself. According to one of the ladies in charge, the church is named after Altagracia, who was considered a deity among the Guaiquerí indigenous people. Its design is unique in the city because it lacks the traditional flanking towers; instead, the bell tower stands separate from the main temple structure, positioned out front.
A white cross stands to one side of the façade, and the church features a trapezoidal roof. Steps lead up to the main entrance—a rectangular doorway with white metal grilles. There are gardens with striking plants out front, a perimeter fence, and the parish house located at the rear. The church's design had always caught my eye; whenever I drove down that avenue, I would check to see if it was open. While running errands with a friend, the opportunity finally arose to go inside and see the design—I couldn't believe it was open at that hour. We took a break and headed over to the church. I was finally able to see the interior, which I must say is lovely; I really liked the striking colors. As seen in the photograph, the main entrance is reached via a short flight of concrete steps, with wall-mounted lamps lining the sides. Another view shows part of the garden, a white fountain, and various plants; the church is located in the city center on Mariño Street, flanked by various commercial establishments, a bank, and government offices, among others. Its corner location gives the building greater visibility.
Saludos amigos viajeros en todo el mundo, deseo se encuentren disfrutando de buena salud y tengan un excelente y bendecido día, me siento feliz de compartir mi visita a la iglesia santuario no nuestra señora de Altagracia, desde hace varios meses quería conocer el diseño interior de esta iglesia, pero las veces que pasaba estaba cerrada, solo había tomado fotos del diseño exterior, que es muy bonito por cierto y destaca por su peculiar campanario que tiene forma triangular y una placa en la parte posterior, a los lados hay varias ventanas y esta torre está ubicada al frente de la iglesia; de acuerdo a la información de una de las señoras encargadas, la iglesia lleva el nombre de Altagracia, quien era considerada una deidad entre los indígenas Guaiqueríes, su diseño es único en la ciudad, pues no tiene las tradicionales torres a los lados, en su lugar un campanario aparte de la estructura del templo, ubicado al frente .
a uno de los lados de la fachada hay una cruz blanca, la iglesia tiene en el techo forma de trapecio, para ingresar hay unas escaleras que conducen a la puerta principal, esta es rectangular con varias rejas de color blanco, al frente hay también jardines con llamativas plantas y cuenta con su respectiva cerca perimetral y la casa parroquial en la parte posterior, siempre me ha llamado la atención el diseño de esta iglesia, las veces que pasaba por esa avenida observaba para saber si estaba abierta, mientras realizaba diligencias con una amiga, finalmente se dio la oportunidad de poder ingresar y conocer su diseño, no podía creer que estaba abierta a esa hora, hicimos una pausa y nos dirigimos a la iglesia, finalmente pude conocer su diseño interior, el cual debo decir es muy bonito y me gustó por sus llamativos colores, la puerta principal, cómo se observa en la fotografía, está ubicada luego de un pequeño pasillo de escaleras de concreto, a los lados hay varias lámparas en las paredes; en otra vista tenemos parte del jardín, una fuente de color blanco y varias plantas, esta iglesia se encuentra ubicada en el centro de la ciudad en la calle Mariño y al lado de ella se ubican varios establecimientos comerciales, una entidad bancaria, oficinas gubernamentales entre otras, su ubicación en la esquina le da mayor visibilidad al edificio.
To be honest, I was thrilled to see the church open and to be able to explore its interior design. As I climbed the stairs, I noticed the light fixtures—similar to the lanterns used in colonial times—and a handrail for support. The floor is made of granite with light and dark gray stripes, featuring a central red stripe that leads to the altar. The altar displays a beautiful painting flanked by lights, with the inscription "I am the bread of life" beneath it. On the adjacent pedestal stands a white sculpture of Altagracia, adorned with lovely flowers. The pulpit is also white and decorated with the Venezuelan flag. The ceiling features a diamond-patterned grid design that I found very attractive; it is the first church I have seen with this type of ceiling. The décor is simple yet beautiful, with wooden pews arranged on either side of the main aisle. Near the altar, there are also several bulletin boards displaying images and information about the church's activities.
I also liked the windows for their striking colors. Every church I have visited has a standout feature, and here, the ceiling and the minimalist altar appealed to me the most. While other altars may be more ornate, this one is simple yet lovely, highlighted by white grilles made of small squares that cover the windows, the front entrance, and the rear area where the altar is located. Another view reveals the ceiling again, along with pews lining the walls, additional bulletin boards, and sculptures; the windows combine yellow and blue tones with a central cross. The square-patterned grilles definitely give the church a unique style and frame the cross.
Siendo honesta, me emocioné mucho al ver que la iglesia estaba abierta y podía conocer su diseño interior, mientras subía la escalera observé las lámparas y son similares a las que se usaban en la época colonial, llamadas también faroles, al lado de la escalera hay un pasamano para sostenerse mientras avanzas, el piso es de granito con franjas en gris claro y oscuro y en el centro tiene una franja de color rojo que conduce hasta el altar, en él se encuentra una hermosa pintura con destello de luces a los lados, debajo dice Yo soy el pan de vida, y en el siguiente pedestal se encuentra la escultura de Altagracia este es de color blanco y está decorado con hermosas flores, el púlpito es de color blanco también y está decorado con la bandera de Venezuela, el techo es una especie de celdas con forma de diamante que me pareció muy bonito, es la primera iglesia que veo con este tipo de techos, la decoración es sencilla y hermosa, los bancos son de madera y están ubicados a ambos lados del pasillo principal, al lado del altar hay también varias carteleras con imágenes e informaciones alusivas a las actividades que realiza la iglesia.
Las ventanas también me gustaron por sus llamativos colores, cada iglesia que he visitado tiene un elemento llamativo y en esta el techo y el altar minimalista fueron los que más me gustaron, otros altares tienen más adornos, este es sencillo pero muy bonito y destacan las rejas de color blanco formada por pequeños cuadrados, que cubren las ventanas, la puerta delantera y posterior donde se ubica el altar; en otra vista se aprecia nuevamente el techo y los bancos ubicados en los lados de las paredes, otras carteleras y esculturas, las ventanas combinan los colores amarillo y azul y una cruz en el centro, definitivamente las rejas cuadradas le dan un estilo diferente a esta iglesia y enmarcan la cruz.
Since the service hadn't started yet, I took the opportunity to take a short tour and explore the church's interior. The side sections feature a triangular finish and various LED lights; this area houses the windows, which are decorated with cross motifs or zigzag lines. To my mind, the ceiling harmonizes perfectly with the structure, adding style and elegance to the church. Next, we see another row of pews and various religious images on the wall, followed by another view of the altar and the sculptures positioned on either side. The pews are arranged in six rows—one on each side of the central aisle and two along the outer sides, aligning with the side walls. Moving toward the other side of the altar, one can see more sculptures, a notice board, and additional rows of pews. I was struck by the presence of several images on the side walls near the light fixtures; I am actually unsure of their significance. Higher up, there is an inscription or logo—apparently the letter "M" or perhaps a figure representing the indigenous Guaquerí people.
According to the information provided by the lady I spoke with, the church originally had a traditional design and operated in a different part of the city. It was later rebuilt with a modern design incorporating elements of the colonial neoclassical style. In its original form, it featured a central triangular section and two flanking towers—typical of classical church architecture—but upon becoming a sanctuary, it adopted a new, modern style.
The lady explained that the church began in a simple hut on Bermúdez Street before moving to other locations where a proper church building was constructed; that building was subsequently destroyed by an earthquake, and a commercial establishment now operates on the site. Following the necessary administrative procedures, the site was designated a sanctuary, and the current structure was built—distinguished by its unique tower and a trapezoidal central design. It was a lovely tour of this beautiful architectural landmark in the city.
Como aún no habían iniciado el servicio, aproveché para hacer un pequeño recorrido explorando los espacios de la iglesia, en los lados tiene una terminación triangular y varias luces led, en esta área se ubican las ventanas con sus respectivas decoraciones en cruz o líneas en forma de zigzag, el techo a mi parecer va muy acorde con la estructura y agrega estilo y elegancia a la iglesia, seguidamente vemos la otra fila de bancos y varias imágenes ubicadas en la pared, luego otra vista del altar y las esculturas ubicadas a ambos lados, los bancos están distribuidos en seis filas una a cada lado del pasillo y dos a los lados, estos coinciden con las paredes laterales, avanzando hasta el otro lado del altar se aprecian otras esculturas, cartelera y las siguientes filas de bancos, me llamó la atención que en las paredes laterales hay varias imágenes ubicadas cerca de las lámparas, realmente desconozco qué significado tienen, en la parte superior hay una inscripción o logo que al parecer es una letra M o tal vez una figura alusiva a los indígenas Guaqueríes.
De acuerdo a la información suministrada por la señora, la iglesia inicialmente tenía un diseño tradicional y funcionaba en otra zona de la ciudad, posteriormente se construyó con un diseño moderno y algunas incidencias del neoclásico colonial, cuando era iglesia tenía una forma triangular en el centro y las dos torres a los lados como el diseño clásico, al convertirse en santuario se toma en un nuevo diseño de estilo moderno.
La señora me explicó que la iglesia inició en una choza que funcionaba en la calle Bermúdez, posteriormente se fue trasladando a otros lugares donde se construyó la propia iglesia, la cual fue destruida por un terremoto, en ese terreno actualmente funciona un establecimiento comercial, luego de los trámites correspondientes se eleva a santuario y se construye esta estructura que destaca por su particular torre y un diseño de trapecio en la parte central, fue un lindo recorrido por esta hermosa obra arquitectonica de la ciudad.

Usually I'm not a fan of modern churches or sanctuary but I must admit this one it's very beautiful in the inner part and very neat.
