Beautiful exhibition of paintings at the Cumaná Athenaeum (Eng - Esp)
During the celebration of Cumaná's birthday in 2025, the Ateneo held a beautiful art exhibition. This institution is located on Bolívar Street, very close to the old headquarters of the governor's office and Bolívar Square. Its training program offers courses in painting, ceramic molding, oil painting, charcoal, among others, and is aimed at both children and adults. As I was heading towards Sucre Street, where the "Noches de Antaño" (Nights of Yesteryear) event is held, I saw a small exhibit in front of the Ateneo. It caught my eye, and my son and I decided to go in. The Ateneo is a colonial-era house, as you can see from its facade. It has large windows, a wooden door, and a roof that combines wood and tile. The corner is black, and there's a black stripe along the bottom of the wall. Next to the Ateneo is the former governor's office, a white building. Looking back, we see the different windows that correspond to the spaces where the courses are held. The window has a lovely design; the interior is made of wood with raised rectangles, and the grille combines flowers with heart shapes. Behind and on the other side are several houses with similar characteristics to this building, as they all have a design inspired by the colonial style. Although some have been repaired, the aim is to maintain the original design.
On the street behind the Ateneo, there's a very pretty house with a lovely front garden. Its triangular facade makes it one of the most striking houses due to its beautiful design and lush garden. Continuing on the opposite side of the Ateneo, we see the old governor's headquarters again, with its striking white columns and a view of the street lined with houses of various designs in the colonial style. They all share a common characteristic: large windows, tiled roofs, and high walls. Continuing along the path, we find an office with a modern design. The walls have arches at the top and a square on each column. I liked the gray color of this wall.
Durante la celebración del cumpleaños de cumaná el año 2025, el Ateneo realizó una hermosa exposición de arte, esta institución se ubica en la calle Bolívar muy cerca de la antigua sede de la gobernación y de la plaza Bolívar, su programa de formación ofrece cursos de pintura, moldeado de cerámica, pintura al óleo, carboncillo, entre otros y está dirigido a tanto a niños como a adultos; cuando me dirigía hacia la calle Sucre donde se realizan las Noches de Antaño, vi una pequeña exhibición al frente del ateneo, me llamó la atención y en compañía de mi hijo, decidimos entrar, el ateneo es una casa de origen colonial, como se puede observar en su fachada tiene grandes ventanas, la puerta es de madera y el techo combina madera y teja, la esquina es de color negro y tiene una franja de color negro en la parte inferior de la pared, al lado del Ateneo se ubica la antigua sede de la gobernación, el edificio de color blanco, luego tenemos una vista desde la parte frontal hacia atrás, en ella se aprecian las diferentes ventanas que corresponden a las a los espacios donde se realizan los cursos, la ventana tiene un lindo diseño, el interior es de madera, con rectángulos en alto relieve y la reja combina flores con figuras de corazón, en la parte de atrás y al otro lado se ubican varias casas, con características similares al de esta estructura, ya que todas tienen un diseño inspirado en el estilo colonial, aunque algunas han sido reparadas, se trata de mantener el diseño.
En la calle que pasa por detrás de ateneo, se ubica una casa muy bonita con un lindo jardín frontal, la fachada es triangular y es una de las casas más llamativas por su lindo diseño y frondoso jardín, avanzando del lado contrario del ateneo, vemos nuevamente la antigua sede de la gobernación, sus llamativas columnas en color blanco y una vista de la calle con casas de variados diseños que corresponden al estilo colonial, todas mantienen una característica en común; grandes ventanas, techos con tejas y paredes altas, seguimos el recorrido y nos encontramos una oficina con diseño moderno, las paredes tienen arcos en la parte superior y un cuadrado en cada columna, el color gris de esta pared me gustó.
Before entering the Ateneo, we took a short walk around the area to admire its striking houses. It was our first time visiting the back section. The houses are beautiful, large, and most have front gardens. After our walk, we returned along the street by the old governor's office and entered the Ateneo. Besides its facade, it stands out for its colorful tiled floor, featuring various square patterns in brown and light yellow. There are also several sculptures in the hallway, including a wooden one of Simón Bolívar, the Liberator. The door leading to the hallway has a beautiful design, with wood carvings and ovals of different colors above; the frame is entirely made of wood.
Here, the floor tile has a very different design from the previous one. This one combines beautiful flowers similar to Christmas blossoms with squares, rectangles, and circles. Along the sides, there's a brickwork pattern and a painted strip in white and burgundy. Inside, you can see the hallway and the areas of the athenaeum. Like typical colonial houses, it has a long hallway with the rooms along one side, columns, and a space or corridor that was once used for the garden and stables. There's also an exhibit of brochures about prominent artists from the region. The space or corridor is used for concerts and music rehearsals. The floor is red, and from this area, you can enjoy a spectacular view of the castle, which is located on La Eminencia hill, just a few meters from the athenaeum. The windows for this event were decorated with Christmas motifs, such as reindeer, Christmas flowers, and the typical paintings that adorn the athenaeum, since, as I mentioned before, it's an institution where various activities related to the arts take place.
The Christmas decorations include pencil-shaped reindeer. To the right of the main entrance is a photograph showing the former color of the Athenaeum. Next are several charcoal drawings created by the students of this institution, depicting various fruits, vases, wine glasses, and other items. These drawings are very beautiful and have a spectacular finish. The cups have lovely details that make them look realistic. Following these are a series of drawings from the anime series Treasure Planet, featuring an anime girl in a very relaxed pose and a rocker boy hitting a ball with his guitar.
Antes de entrar al ateneo, hicimos un pequeño recorrido por la zona para observar sus llamativas casas, es la primera vez que visitamos el área posterior, las casas son bonitas, grandes y la mayoría de ellas tienen jardines en la parte delantera, luego de nuestro recorrido, regresamos por la transversal de la antigua gobernación y entramos al ateneo, el cual además de su fachada, destaca por el piso con una losa colorida, varias figuras de cuadrados en color marrón y amarillo claro, también hay varias esculturas en el pasillo, entre ellas una de madera que corresponde al Libertador Simón Bolívar, la puerta que conduce hacia el pasillo tiene un bonito diseño, con tallado en madera y óvalos de diferentes colores en la parte de arriba; el marco es totalmente de madera.
Aquí la losa del piso, tiene un diseño muy diferente al anterior, esta combina hermosas flores similares a las flores navideñas, con cuadrados, rectángulos y círculos, a los lados tiene caico y una franja de pintura con los colores blanco y vinotinto, ya en el interior se observa el pasillo y las áreas del ateneo, tiene como las típicas casas coloniales, un pasillo largo con las habitaciones hacia un lado, columnas y un espacio o corredor que era destinado al jardín y las caballerizas, también cuenta con una exhibición de folletos sobre los destacados artistas de la región; el espacio o corredor está destinado para realizar los conciertos y las prácticas de música, el piso es de color rojo y desde esta zona se aprecia una espectacular vista del castillo, el cual está ubicado en el cerro la Eminencia a pocos metros del ateneo, las ventanas para este evento fueron decoradas con motivos navideños, como renos, flores navideñas y los típicos cuadros que adornan el ateneo, ya que, como la mencioné anteriormente es una institución donde se realizan varias actividades vinculadas con el arte.
La decoración navideña incluye renos en forma de lápiz, al lado derecho de la entrada principal, se ubica una foto donde se observa el antiguo color del ateneo, luego varios cuadros realizados por los jóvenes que asisten a esta institución, con la técnica la técnica de carboncillo, se observan varias frutas, jarrones, copas de vino, entre otros, estos dibujos se ven muy bonitos y con un acabado espectacular, las tazas tienen hermosos detalles que las hacen ver realistas, a continuación una serie de dibujos que corresponden a los anime llamada El planeta del tesoro, una chica anime en una pose muy relajada y un chico rockero bateando la pelota con la guitarra.
Moving through the exhibition spaces, we saw several paintings. The first one was very striking: a girl in a yellow dress, surrounded by several angels with roses. In the background, a beautiful blue sky with clouds was visible. The next painting depicted a girl with long hair, wearing a beige dress adorned with blue and orange flowers. Her hair was decorated with various flowers, and a lovely hummingbird hovered near her and the flowers. The other paintings also featured flowers in vases. At the bottom of each painting, the names of the artists were displayed.
According to one of the staff members at the art center, the technique used was watercolor. I must say, the works are very beautiful. Although my knowledge of art isn't the most extensive, these paintings are lovely, and their colors are very vibrant. The painting of the candle is one of my favorites, as it seems that the candle is gradually melting. Next to this painting is the one of the jar with several desert flowers. Then we have a beautiful painting that reflects several houses on the shore of the lake; these have vibrant colors and the boats rest on the water.
In the other exhibition area are the works made with clay: cups, a quinceañera in a tricolor dress, sculptures of iconic city figures such as the Monk and the Indian, a girl dressed in the tricolor, and then one of the most popular drawings. The technique used for these works was India ink; there are several versions of the girls with different outfits, their hair and clothing featuring the colors pink, purple, and white.
There's also a representation of Spiderman in various styles, a boy on a motorcycle, another anime version, charcoal and ink drawings, and finally, a display of several faces done in graphite on cardboard—one of the most common techniques, as it's what the students use when they're starting out. I really enjoyed the tour of this art exhibit and learned about the different painting techniques. The Ateneo celebrated the city's birthday with a beautiful art exhibition, showcasing the talent and creativity of these young people. I can't choose a favorite piece; they all look great. These kids definitely have talent and do beautiful work. After our tour, a concert was held in the corridor area with the young people who take music classes. The concert featured the students in training and some guests who sang beautiful songs. It was a lovely experience visiting the Ateneo and seeing this beautiful art exhibition. After about three hours at the Ateneo, we headed towards Sucre Street to see the well-known Noches de Antaño (Nights of Yesteryear).
Avanzando por los espacios de exhibición, vimos varios cuadros, el primero de ellos es muy llamativo, una chica ataviada con un vestido amarillo y al lado ángeles con rosas alrededor, al fondo se ve un hermoso cielo azul con varias nubes, en el siguiente cuadro está una chica de cabello largo, lleva un vestido de color beige con flores azules y naranja, en el cabello varias flores y un lindo colibrí está cerca de ella y de las flores, los otros cuadros también corresponden a flores en su respectivo florero, en la parte inferior se pueden leer los autores de estas hermosas obras.
Según información de uno de los encargados en el ateneo, esta técnica corresponde a la acuarela, debo decir que los trabajos son muy bonitos, aunque mi conocimiento en arte es no es el más amplio, estos cuadros se ven bonitos y sus colores muy llamativos; el cuadro de la vela es uno de mis favoritos, pues parece que la vela se va derritiendo progresivamente, junto a este cuadro se observa el de la jarra con varias flores del desierto, luego tenemos un hermoso cuadro que refleja varias casas a la orilla del lago, estas tienen vibrantes colores y los botes descansan en el agua.
En la otra zona de exhibición, se ubican los trabajos elaborados con arcilla; tazas, una quinceañera con el traje tricolor, esculturas de personaje icónicos de la ciudad, como el Monje el Indio, una chica trajeada con el tricolor y luego uno de los dibujos que más tuvieron visita, la técnica en estos trabajos fue con tinta china, hay varias versiones de las chicas con atuendos diferentes, en el cabello y en la ropa llevan los colores rosa, morado y blanco.
También hay una representación de spiderman con cariados estilos, un chico en moto, nuevamente la versión de los anime, trabajo en carboncillo y tinta china, finalmente una muestra de varios rostros con la técnica de grafito sobre cartulina, una de la técnica más usada, porque es la que emplean los chicos cuando están iniciando, el recorrido por esta exhibición de arte me gustó mucho y pude aprender sobre las técnicas que se usan para pintar, en el ateneo festejaron el cumpleaños de la ciudad con una hermosa exhibición de arte, demostrando el talento y creatividad de estos jóvenes, no puedo escoger una obra favorita, todas se ven muy bien, definitivamente estos chicos sí que tienen talento y hacen un hermoso trabajo, terminado nuestro recorrido se realizó un concierto en el área del corredor, con los jóvenes que reciben clase de música, el concierto contó con la participación de los chicos en formación y algunos invitados que participaron cantando hermosas canciones, fue una linda experiencia visitar el ateneo y ver esta hermosa exposición de arte, luego de aproximadamente tres horas en el ateneo, avanzamos hacia la calle Sucre, para ver las conocidas Noches de Antaño.

What a wonderful exhibition, and such a cultural way to celebrate the city’s anniversary. I really liked the introduction you gave at the start, to set the scene and tell us a bit about the place, where it’s located, and describe it in such detail. I love the interior with that garden.
But what I liked even more was all the art on display there. The pencil drawings are very good. Of course, there are different styles and some works are better than others. My favourites are the woman in the yellow dress and the portrait next to it; they’re perfect, though I also liked the landscape with the boats. There are many styles and levels of skill. The anime pieces are also very well done, and what matters is the art and culture. Thank you so much for bringing this exhibition here; it’s been brilliant to walk around the venue looking at all of it. A big hug!🤗

El ateneo tuvo una celebración muy particular, la exposición de arte me encantó, los chicos usaron varias técnicas y los trabajos se ven muy bien, fue un lindo recorrido por cada espacio para ver las diferentes temáticas de los cuadros, las esculturas quedaron espectaculares y representan personajes históricos de la ciudad.
El diseño del ateneo corresponde al estilo colonial y destaca por sus largos pasillos, pisos coloridos, grandes ventanas y el patio central, que se emplea para las actividades musicales y presentaciones, las losas del piso son hermosas y llamativas, la decoración navideña es sencilla pero encantadora y acorde con la exposición de pintura, creo que el objetivo era darle prioridad y visibilidad a la exposición de arte sin dejar por fuera la navidad, me encantó hacer una pausa en el camino hacia la calle Sucre y ver esta increíble exposición artística.

The Ateneo had a very special celebration. I loved the art exhibition; the students used various techniques, and the works looked fantastic. It was a lovely tour through each space to see the different themes of the paintings. The sculptures were spectacular and depict historical figures from the city.
The Ateneo's design is in the colonial style and is notable for its long hallways, colorful floors, large windows, and central courtyard, which is used for musical activities and presentations. The floor tiles are beautiful and eye-catching. The Christmas decorations are simple yet charming and perfectly suited to the art exhibition. I think the goal was to give priority and visibility to the art exhibition without neglecting the Christmas spirit. I loved pausing on my way to Sucre Street to see this incredible art display.
