The First Strawberries of the Year

avatar

( EN / DE ) Everyone probably knows that feeling when you really crave a certain food. Every year in the spring I feel this way with strawberries. I love strawberries! Nevertheless, I refrain from buying imported strawberries from far away countries in winter. Firstly, all this global transport is not good for our planet and secondly, strawberries simply taste best when the season is right and they land on the dining table fresh, sweet and deliciously harvested in the region.

In downtown Graz, in one of the many old building courtyards there is this small fruit and vegetable stand. Many fresh herbs, fruits and vegetables smiled at me. And in the middle of it, there they were! :-) Strawberries from Austria! Although they come now still from a greenhouse, the summer is unfortunately waiting here, but at least they are grown regionally and so I just could not resist.

My body seemed to have the need for the color red, because the beet also smiled at me. Between all the herbs I found in addition a peppermint, because my plant on the balcony has not yet sprouted and I also like fresh mint so much.

And so I came home with a - completely unplanned - small but fine purchase. Most of the strawberries were immediately eaten pure and fresh. With the rest I made a super delicious smoothie.

Strawberries, banana, mint leaves and a little water

Smoothie makers are simply the most ingenious and important household appliances ever, I couldn't imagine life without one.

This was my sweet and healthy purchase for the wonderful #marketfriday created by @dswigle that takes us to so many fascinating markets around the world again every week.

When life gives you strawberries, enjoy them just as sweet as they are ;-)

I love strawberries, but they haven't come into the season yet in UK this year. Strawberries and cream are a big thing at Wimbledon in June (not that I'm going) so hopefully I'll get to see more of them in the shops next month.

We have a farm here where people go and pick them during a few weeks in the summer. We used to go with my Mom when were kids.
Now I just go to the grocery store. Have a great day, @beeber😆

Yes the season starts, they're lot of stands with strawberies when I drive back home from work. A kilo costs about 5-6€. But today I bought bluebeerries. Will be good with mango ice cream. 😜

Summer with all the fresh fruits is fantastic :-)

From your post yesterday I googled about asparagus, will try to plant some. Maybe wild asparagus

Hi, @beeber, the wild ones have even more flavor, we go foraging for them some 40 km away, in Slovenian Istria, they don't grow in our soil. This is waiting to be published when I have time. 😎

We don't have strawberries over here yet but I can't wait to see them on market. Already have a few smoothie recipes in mind that I want to try out as soon as possible 🥰

I love it! I have to admit, I like the sound of those words in my ears! It is such a happy phrase!

When life gives you strawberries, enjoy them just as sweet as they are.

First of all, your pictures are so beautiful! It is so nice to see when pictures are carefully framed and care is taken. Everyone snaps pictures, but, I just wanted you to know that it is appreciated when I see the effort put in. I like your thoughts on buying local, and it is true! Strawberries are a favorite of many, is it any wonder? Big, red, luscious berries, I can usually smell their flavor before I see them, especially if they are a slightly bit warmed by the sun. Yummy! My appliance is our most used and loved also! Who doesn't love the flavors of smoothie, blended to perfection?

Unplanned purchases usually work out to be the best! Thank you so much for taking us with you on your outing! It was delightful!

#MarketFriday began as a way to reach out across the globe and learn about different cultures through their markets, especially local markets and farmers' markets, and eventually branched out and evolved over time from straight shopping to a cultural affair as it highlights how we differ and then again, how much we are alike. We have become a melting pot of culture, but it is still the Rituals, Festivals, food, architecture, and even your language/languages that separate us... Along with the fact that these things are normal for us. There are unwritten rules that rule our social behaviors. I see this as allowing for increased tolerance between cultures and nations, and opportunities to come together on an even playing ground. A strong culture can be beneficial to a country as it promotes unity, especially during a crisis, peaceful debate, and open dialogue. I have learned so much about all of you and it has been an amazing experience. I can only hope that learning about each other can help us work together for a peaceful world.

Thank you for being a part of #MarketFriday

Dont know how the phrase came to my mind, but I love it too. Focus on the good things around us seems to be difficult for people these days
