A Rare Guest in the Garden

( EN / DE )
The European praying mantis is nothing unusual here, as it is quite native to our latitudes, but it is quite rare and you hardly ever see them. So I was all the more delighted when I discovered this pretty insect in our garden.

When I saw her, she remained in the position that is probably the best to lie in wait for insects. Even if you wouldn't believe it, it can still snap at you in milliseconds with its powerful tentacles.
To us humans, of course, this looks exactly as if she worships and idolises the heavens, hence the name "God's worshipper" in German meaning.

After struggling again with the sharpness setting of my mobile phone camera, I photographed for quite a long time. This must have made her nervous, because she kept crawling to find a new place.

The new place didn't seem right either, so keep looking.... It's strange, at first glance it looks like it's very clumsy when crawling on the leaves. But it is not at all. It just seems to have all the time in the world and I was especially fascinated by its long legs, how flexible they are.

From a distance it is very easy to miss, because well camouflaged and immobile it looks like a leaf. This is also their tactic to catch food that happens to fly by. I estimated the size at 6 cm, which is relatively normal for this species.

For me they are totally fascinating, also in their calmness, like a spider, trusting that the food will come flying to them.

As always I hope you liked this post and are as amazed by nature as I am :-) Yours, B.

Stunning photos here. It's not so easy to capture green on green, yet you got such a good contrast and nice framing and aperture:)

There should be more in Spain than here? But they are hiding themselves very well.

I have done a little research and where there is more is in the Canary Islands. That's farther from my house than Austria. 🤣

What a beautiful specimen, nature shows us very interesting species every day, mantises can help to control other species. Very nice pictures, have a great week.

Interesting creatures if nothing else! Here's a video of mine with one I met 5 years ago:

Wow this is amazing! How it looks at you, checking out... Shall I stay, can I jump?
And the same in your video. Somehow you think they are not good in climbing, but thats not true.

You're right. To be honest I'm a little impressed that its distinctive green colour was not so nicely captured on that video though my phone doesn't lack in colouring when it comes to videos (it lacks a bit in pictures). Useless info of the day but it might had happened due to the fact that it was brand new back in the day and the camera app got updated later for better results. Unbelievable that I still have this thing which (believe it or not) it's still my main capturing device. Literally unbreakable and still waterproof, it's the longest last phone I ever had. Even its battery doesn't show signs of wear!

Am not happy with the new phone camera 🥴 cannot set the focus to the point I tap. If by chance it focusses right than pictures are perfect.
Often get jealous when I look at others photos like @foxkoit for example. But those cameras are out of reach at the moment 🤷‍♀️
Have a nice day!

Focus on close ups while using a phone's camera can be very frustrating. Even worse, you may not notice how of focus is your picture on your phone's display but only later when it's too late. First world problems but as frustrating 🙂
Have a nice day too!

Maybe I give my old Canon 450d a second chance. But hasnt that resolution and a battery problem.

If you don't crop your pictures that much resolution is not a huge issue. Speaking of batteries, you can find replacements or carry a power bank. Funny how the latter costs much less than the former though it's capacity is multiple times larger.

It has Akkus. Strange that they get empty soon when they are in the camera, even when its turned off. But they keep the charge when they are outside.
So the strategy is to Always take them out and in wich somehow was stressy.

This started at times the phones got good cameras, so I never asked for repair shop. Maybe because no original akkus.

Hmmm... when you make photos try use timer 2s or 5s... you have very a light device in hand, if you press this button or tap the screen, the phone will immediately shake, but if you use the timer, you will get a little sharper image, because you do not tap and press anything.

Yes, they are not very common here, but they can be seen. Women are said to be cannibals, they eat men.😜

I'd love to see one in real life, I've never seen one. At least I don't remember.

I must inform myself well, but I think they don't like to live in the Caribbean!!!😁

Greetings from Havana and may that garden continue to be full of creatures that adore creation; life!!!!🙏

OW, I have only seen one in my life and that was in Croatia. They don't seem to live here in the north. The Alps probably still act as a natural barrier.
