The Sand Dunes of Maspalomas, Gran Canaria

(Edited)

As I was staying in Maspalomas in Gran Canaria, I had heard before visiting that there were Sand Dunes on the shorefront of the town. And in typical fashion, I didn't go to see them until my last evening of my visit!

First of all, a warning, you are not meant to be walking the sand dunes if I am understanding this sign correctly!
But it will become very clear soon that this sign is very much ignored!

I had timed my visit to catch sunset over the dunes, and it appears people were wanting to watch the sunset from the dunes.

And pose for photos with the sun behind them...

It's very clear the trails that have formed in the dunes with everyone walking on them, although by this area that I started from, there was no signage, so its quite easy to not be aware that this was a banned activity to be doing.

IMGP2027.JPG

And just to show how close to civilisation the dunes are, that is Maspalomas right there, just meters away!

IMGP2029.JPG

While I am sure it would have been a lovely view from the top of the dune, I honestly just didn't fancy any sand in my shoes, so staying where I was suited me!

IMGP2030.JPG

From the same viewpoint at wide angle, you can get a sense of the size of the dunes.

IMGP2031.JPG

And people seem to feel that watching the sun set while on the dune is the thing to do, although for me its about seeing the setting sun colours hitting the sand.

IMGP2032.JPG

Although I am wondering how people managed to walk that central part, as its incredibly steep and not even a Lada Niva is getting up that!

IMGP2037.JPG

And the people sit, missing out on the wonderful colouring as the sun sets against the dunes, missing that golden hour of shade.

IMGP2040.JPG

I did manage to find an official walking route so decided to explore and came across this

IMGP2038.JPG

Which I honestly cannot decide if this is some form of dead tree or purely roots from something long gone.

IMGP2041.JPG

Still as I walk back to where I started from, you can really see how the setting sun is hitting the sand and bringing our that golden colour.

IMGP2042.JPG

Which is an utter shame since the people sitting on top of the dunes looking at the direction of the sun will just be, well blinded and missing out.

IMGP2045.JPG

Still, for me I got to see the best parts of it in my mind, since the setting sun was then covered by the clouds and nobody got to see that last moment where it dropped below the water line.

Beautiful pictures! I have friends that have been in Gran Canaria literally in the last few days and they went on the sand dunes and of course experienced a sand storm!

I think they were fine... though thinking on it I haven't heard from them in two days....
goes off to check....

Aww thank you 😊 Yeah, I really liked seeing the dunes as well, was something unique to the place that I had never seen in person before. Think as a place to live, maybe not for me, but I welcomed the week in the heat and sun while it was snowing and ice back at home!

I agree , much better than snow 😅
We have very pretty sand dunes in France but as a woman i cant lay there cause many perv come to look at women laying down . I say that cause i had that issue once and never returned to the dunes anymore .

It was great, I was defrosting the car at -7c, next day I was up in the mountains at 26c! was a great escape! 🌞

Oh, such lovely people there by the sounds of that 😔 Such a shame though as can imagine they are so nice to visit as well and totally do not blame you, as all you want is peace to relax and enjoy.

Oh shoot, too bad this post is past payout but I wanted to leave a comment anyway as this looks so cool! I never heard of these dunes, only know dunes from Holland but they don't look as spectacular as these :) Shame about the clouds ruining the best moment on picture, how dare they! :)

Great post, really loved it!

Aww it's all good, thank you for popping in to comment on this though, thats always welcome 🙂 The dunes were a bit of a surprise to me, I mentioned to a friend (the one I went to Rome with) and she said about the Dunes and shouldn't be too far from the hotel if I wanted to walk down. Was the first time I had seen dunes as well so was really impressive to see!

And yeah, damn clouds, how dare they! Grandpa Simpson is required here!

Must have been impressive indeed if that was the first time. I don't remember anything that spectacular in Holland but we did have an area in the south near us where it was all dunes, like in the middle of nothing haha.. When I had dogs I often went there to let the dogs play.. but the sand was not as cool looking as it is in your pics. I never really understood why these dunes were there in Holland as there was no see near.. Gosh need to google it now :)

Have a great day!
