A visit to Roque Nublo and La Rana in Gran Canaria

Sitting at a height of 1813 meters, this is the second highest location on the island of Gran Canaria, with the highest point being Pico de las Nieves.

IMGP1608.JPG

Before stating on the trail just looking to the north for the surrounding mountains in the area.

IMGP1612.JPG

So the trail starts, just after crossing the road from the carpark. And the promised paved trail is there!

IMGP1613.JPG

Our target, Roque Nublo

IMGP1615.JPG

The view to the south of the Island, where I started the day from Maspalomas

IMGP1616.JPG

Part of the road is cut into the mountain for access which is even attempted by smaller minibuses.

IMGP1619.JPG

From the start of the trail you are within a part of the forest land as well

IMGP1621.JPG

Space starts to open out along the path but as there is no side protection it is best to be alert of your footing as it is along way down to the left.

IMGP1622.JPG

More views and it can be seen how green the land is here, not so much barren rocks as one would imagine.

IMGP1624.JPG

Lies!!!! They said it was a paved route all the way up, what is this?!? The trail definitely becomes a lot more harder from here onwards.

IMGP1626.JPG

Still after all the challenges faced, you are greeted with this view!

IMGP1629.JPG

So by this point, thats 1km completed, and another half a KM to go, but its not going to be that easy, yet!

IMGP1633.JPG

The path does continue but comes across as rather confusing as the signage doesn't continue, so along the ridge?

IMGP1635.JPG

That was pretty much a head nope! none shall pass, but lucky enough the path did continue to the right and up another hill.

IMGP1643.JPG

But once finishing all the hill hike parts, this is the view East that awaits you!

IMGP1647.JPG

Roque Nublo, and if you look closely, you can see two people to the right which gives a good idea of its size.

IMGP1648.JPG

But to access Nublo and La Rana, there is still a final challenge to complete

IMGP1649.JPG

And your footing has to be very careful on this one going up and down, as I nearly caught my ankle while doing this.

IMGP1651.JPG

The end goal in sight, both La Rana and Roque Nublo in reaching distance

IMGP1656.JPG

And some views just off of La Rana towards the south towards where I started from

IMGP1658.JPG

To the west where we can see Tenerife in the distance and Mount Teide rising above

IMGP1660.JPG

A peak to the north of La Rana

IMGP1666.JPG

And for something a little different, was this butterfly just resting by the two peaks.

IMGP1668.JPG

And a final look back towards the route towards the car park and starting point, and yes, look down, that is the path!

Gracias! It's well worth the trip if you are back again soon! Take note though. Google Maps insists the area is closed, but it is wrong, it is always open :)

Interesting , i thought it would be greener .
Not as pretty as i thought , but what a courage of you to walk all this path .
At least you had a good break , fresh air and some sun 🙂

It was a healthy break away, that I can confirm!
And thank you, glad the hike was enjoyable to witness!
It is odd though, I found it more greener then I expected, as my last canaries experience was Tenerife and was used to it being all rocky and brown.
Guess it is sitting in the middle 🙂
