The Enchantment of Paper Flowers on Monte Isola

Today I want to tell you about a truly special event, something that only happens once every
five years. I’m talking about the Festa di Santa Croce on Monte Isola. This week, the island
will welcome thousands of visitors eager to witness, after a full 10 years, this wonderful
celebration.

Oggi voglio parlarvi di un evento davvero speciale, che succede solo una volta ogni cinque
anni. Sto parlando della Festa di Santa Croce a Monte Isola. Per questa settimana l’isola
ospiterà migliaia di turisti pronti a vedere, dopo ben 10 anni, questo meraviglioso evento.

Let’s take a moment to talk about the place where this celebration takes place. Monte Isola
is not only an island but also a municipality in the province of Brescia. It lies in the heart of
Lake Iseo and holds the title of the largest lake island in Italy. Without a doubt, it’s one of the
most fascinating islands you can visit, rich in lush vegetation and offering breathtaking views
all around.
And despite its “small” size, it hosts plenty of cultural events—such as this very festival.
Getting there is simple: you just need to head to one of the ports along Lake Iseo’s shores
and hop on a ferry. We decided to leave from the town of Iseo, which actually gives the lake
its name, and from there we boarded the boat to the island. Tickets, however, must be
purchased online in advance.
Parliamo un attimo del luogo dove si svolge questa festa, Monte Isola è un comune oltre che
un'isola, della provincia di Brescia. Si trova all’interno del lago di Iseo, ed è l’isola lacustre
più grande in Italia. E’ sicuramente una delle isole più affascinanti che ci siano, ricca di
vegetazione e piena di panorami mozzafiato.
Inoltre, nonostante le sue “piccole” dimensioni, è culla di tantissimi eventi culturali, come
appunto questa festa.
Raggiungerla è semplice, basta recarsi in uno dei porti presenti lungo la costa del lago di
Iseo ed imbarcarsi sul battello.
Noi ci siamo dirette a Iseo, paese da cui prende il nome il lago, e da lì ci siamo imbarcati per
l’isola.
Il biglietto è obbligatoriamente da comprare online.
This festival has been part of the island tradition for many years, and perhaps this year it
reaches its end. It is usually celebrated every five years, but this year it returns after a full 10
years! This is because in 2020, it had been postponed due to the COVID outbreak.
The festival was born, according to popular tradition, in the 19th century. to avoid the end of
the cholera epidemic, when it ended, the inhabitants promised to celebrate Santa Croce
every five years with something truly spectacular. And so they did! Just one week, the
second of September, the whole country is filled with color! The culmination is September
14, the days of the Holy Cross.
This is a real ritual that is handed down from generation to generation, a commitment that
makes the entire community participate.
Yes, because the feast of Santa Croce requires the creation of many paper flowers, the
entire town of Carzano and the Novale hamlet are decorated with thousands of flowers!
La festa di Santa Croce
Questa festa fa parte della tradizione isolana da moltissimi anni, e forse quest’anno
raggiunge la sua fine. Solitamente si celebra ogni cinque anni, ma quest’anno ritorna dopo
ben 10 anni! Questo perchè nel 2020 era stata rimandata a causa dell’epidemia di COVID.
La festa nasce, secondo la tradizione popolare, nel XIX sec. per scongiurare la fine
dell’epidemia di colera, quando questa terminò, gli abitanti promisero di festeggiare Santa
Croce ogni cinque anni con qualcosa di davvero spettacolare. E così fecero! Una sola
settimana, la seconda di settembre, tutto il paese si riempie di colore! Il culmine è il 14
settembre, giorni di Santa Croce.
Questo è un vero è proprio rito che viene tramandato di generazione in generazione, un
impegno che rende partecipe l’intera comunità.
Si perché la festa di Santa Croce richiede la realizzazione di tantissimi fiori di carta, l’intero
paese di Carzano e la frazione Novale, vengono decorati da migliaia di fiori!
Everyone is committed, in the months leading up to the event, to the construction and
making of these wonderful crepe paper flowers, and I can assure you that from the beauty,
many of these look real.
The visit is a must, not only because of the wonder of the setup and the commitment and
work of the people who live there, but also because being present in these days means
savoring the climate of the community that jealously guards this wonderful tradition.
So keep in mind, because the next time this party happens (if it happens ) will be 2030! And I
hope to be able to tell you about it another time!

Tutti si impegnano, nei mesi che precedono l’evento, nella costruzione e realizzazione di
questi meravigliosi fiori di carta crespa, e vi posso assicurare che dalla bellezza, molti di
questi sembrano veri.
La visita è d’obbligo, non solo per la meraviglia dell’allestimento e l’impegno e lavoro delle
persone che ci vivono, ma anche perché essere presenti in questi giorni vuol dire
assaporare il clima della comunità che custodisce gelosamente questa meravigliosa
tradizione.
Quindi tenete bene a mente, perché la prossima volta che questa festa si farà ( se si farà )
sarà il 2030! E spero di potervela raccontare un’altra volta!
