A journey to my heart : Aquileia

Are you ready for a new post? Today, I’d like to tell you about one of my favorite places. This city has always been present in important moments of my life for a variety of reasons. I’ve visited it four times: the first time with my parents, the second alone for a university course, the third during an excavation campaign (you can find the article below), and the last time this June, with my daughter. For me, it was truly meaningful to bring my daughter along to visit this city because it’s an integral part of my life story.
Siete pronti per un nuovo post? Oggi vorrei parlarvi di uno dei miei posti del cuore. Questa città, per una serie di motivi, è sempre stata presente in momenti significativi della mia vita. L’ho visitata ben quattro volte: la prima con i miei genitori, la seconda da sola per un corso universitario, la terza durante una campagna di scavo (potete trovare l’articolo più sotto), e l’ultima volta questo giugno, con mia figlia. Per me è stato davvero importante portarla con me a visitare questa città, perché rappresenta una parte fondamentale della mia storia personale.

Aquileia Located in Friuli Venezia Giulia, in northern Italy, Aquileia is one of the most important archaeological sites in the region. It was one of the most significant cities during the Roman Empire, serving as a major hub for trade with the northern and eastern parts of the empire. Since 1998, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its artistic and cultural magnificence.
Aquileia Si trova in Friuli Venezia Giulia, nel nord Italia, ed è uno dei siti archeologici più importanti di questa regione. Fu una delle città più significative durante l’Impero Romano, centro nevralgico degli scambi commerciali con il nord e l’est dell’impero. Dal 1998 è Patrimonio dell’Umanità UNESCO, riconosciuto per la sua magnificenza artistica e culturale.

The Archaeological Museum of Aquileia Inside the museum, visitors can explore the entire history of the city. It’s a truly immersive experience that allows you to step into the shoes of the Roman inhabitants of the time. The beauty of the artifacts uncovered during excavation campaigns is simply indescribable. Some objects look almost as if they were machine-made, they’re so perfect — and to think they were created over two thousand years ago! It’s truly something extraordinary. On the ground floor, you’ll find the section dedicated to the territory: public spaces, statues honoring the emperors, and several funerary elements taken from the necropolises.

Il Museo Archeologico di Aquileia All’interno del museo è possibile ripercorrere l’intera storia della città. Si tratta di un’esperienza davvero immersiva, che permette al visitatore di immedesimarsi nella vita degli abitanti romani dell’epoca. La bellezza dei reperti rinvenuti durante le campagne di scavo è semplicemente indescrivibile. Alcuni oggetti sembrano quasi stampati, tanto sono perfetti — e pensare che risalgono a oltre duemila anni fa! È davvero qualcosa di straordinario. Al piano terra si trova la sezione dedicata al territorio: lo spazio pubblico, statue in onore degli imperatori e alcuni elementi funerari provenienti dalle necropoli.

On the first floor, there is an entire section dedicated to production activities and commercial trade. You can observe the different types of amphorae that were used to transport various products, such as wine, oil, garum (a fish sauce), and possibly even fruit or vegetables. The amphorae were specifically designed to be stacked during transport, ensuring that the contents would arrive intact at their destination. Another truly fascinating aspect, for which the entire city is particularly renowned, is its mosaics. Dating from between the 2nd and 4th centuries AD, they can be found both inside private homes (domus) and in public buildings, serving as floor decorations. Some of these mosaics are on display inside the museum, and it’s wonderful to be able to observe them up close—almost as if you could touch them. It truly feels like walking through an ancient Roman domus.
Al primo piano, invece, si trova tutta la sezione dedicata alle attività produttive e agli scambi commerciali. È possibile osservare le diverse tipologie di anfore, utilizzate per trasportare vari prodotti, come il vino, l’olio, il garum (una salsa di pesce) e forse anche frutta o verdura. Le anfore erano progettate appositamente per essere impilate durante il trasporto, in modo da garantire che il contenuto arrivasse integro a destinazione. Un altro aspetto davvero interessante, per cui l’intera città è particolarmente famosa, è quello dei mosaici. Risalenti al periodo compreso tra il II e il IV secolo d.C., si trovano sia all’interno delle domus che in edifici pubblici, come decorazioni pavimentali. Alcuni di questi mosaici sono esposti all’interno del museo, ed è meraviglioso poterli osservare da vicino, quasi toccarli. Si ha davvero l’impressione di camminare all’interno di un’antica domus.

On the top floor, the second, you can admire the beauty of luxury and the wealth of that era. You can see precious gems with refined decorative elements. It's incredible to think that these objects, so small yet full of detail, were made by hand without the use of any machinery. For us today, used to doing everything with just a click, it's truly surreal. The goldsmithing also left me speechless—some pieces seemed almost too perfect to have been made by human hands.

Another thing I deeply appreciated was the opportunity to visit the storage
rooms. In recent years, an important restoration project has made it possible
for the public to access these spaces. Usually, you expect dark, dusty places,
but this one impressed me with its brightness and impeccable order.

All’ultimo piano, il secondo, è possibile ammirare la bellezza del lusso e la ricchezza dell’epoca. Si possono infatti vedere gemme preziose con raffinati elementi decorativi. È incredibile pensare che questi oggetti, così piccoli ma ricchi di dettagli, siano stati realizzati a mano, senza l’ausilio di alcun macchinario. Per noi, abituati oggi a fare tutto con un clic, è davvero surreale. Anche l’oreficeria mi ha lasciata a bocca aperta: alcuni pezzi mi sono sembrati troppo perfetti per essere stati creati dall’uomo.

Un’altra cosa che ho apprezzato profondamente è stata la possibilità di visitare
i depositi. Negli ultimi anni, infatti, è stato effettuato un importante intervento
di restauro che ha permesso l’apertura al pubblico di questi ambienti.
Solitamente, ci si aspetta luoghi bui e pieni di polvere, ma questo mi ha colpito
per la sua luminosità e il suo ordine impeccabile.

What a heartfelt reflection on Aquileia—it truly feels like your visit stirred something deep within your soul. That ancient city, with its elegant basilica, gorgeous mosaics, and whispering ruins, has a way of reaching past the present and touching the heart. The museum, ancient artifacts, mosaics, amphorae and jewelry are all awesome. It’s hard to believe they were made so long ago by hand! Aquileia isn’t just a historical site to you, but a place filled with memories, growth and deep emotional ties.
