Bamboo Palm Photo - Color or Black and White?

Color or Black & White?..

I don't have much time today to mess around with taking photos or making edits.. which sometimes take way more time then taking the actual photos. BUT, I did find a little time to poke around on Hive and look through old photos I took this past year. It's always nice to look through ones old photography. I always seem to find one surprise or another in the mix.

I was looking through a file today and came across several I took of our Bamboo Palm. She sits in our foyer by the front door. It's been there for about 15 years now. She doesn't mind the constant traffic, fluctuating temperatures, her leaves being shut and pinched between the door and the door jam as people shuffle in and out. Nope.. I never hear a single complaint out of her. hehehe.

I give her an occasional haircut and weekly watering. Other than that, she is a low maintenance kind of chick! lol.

On the day I took the photos, the sun was shining through the window and directly on to her foliage. It was a strong morning sun that lit the room just right. Although I made a few edits to the actual coloring seen, there was still lots of hues present. I saw pinks and purples flashing along the wall, mixing in and out of the shadows being cast alongside. I could not resist taking a few shots of the light display!

In this color shot above .. I like how the grain of the wall adds texture, while the dark shadows soften the edges. I also think the deep green leaflets make for interesting subject matter. The pinks are light, fading into purple. It's also nice how the colors transition from one side to the next.

The Black & White version is just as interesting in my eyes.. The graininess is still present, and maybe a bit more noticeable. The leaves and shadows now blend together as one. I don't know if this is a good or bad thing.. maybe neither.. Just different.

Which is your favorite?

“The sensuous person is liquid, flowing, fluid. Each experience, and he becomes it. Seeing a sunset, he is the sunset. Seeing the night, dark night, beautiful silent darkness, he becomes the darkness. In the morning he becomes the light. He is all that life is. He tastes life from every nook and corner, hence he becomes rich. This is real richness. Listening to music he is music, listening to the sound of water he becomes that sound. And when the wind passes through a bamboo grove, and the cracking bamboos, and he is not far away from them: he is amidst them, one of them—he is a bamboo.”

Both photographs are actually very good! You've got a great eye to be able to capture it well both in color and black & white. 😊

I've got a penchant for both because I happen to like silent black & white movies, some of which are tinted. The green and purple colors you captured are common tints in certain silent movies, and they exude personal memories, so I'm slightly partial to that photograph. However, that's purely subjective!

It is subjective, but very spot on. I do not meet many people who enjoy the silent movies anymore. One really has to watch the movie and anymore I see so many on their phones instead. Nothing like the charm of a good black and white movie!

Thank you for the wonderful comment!

Color! Whether by coincidence or by design, what you have here is a perfect broken compelementary harmony. On a color wheel, the background colors are precisely mid-point between the complementary of green and the green triad. This is why it looks so good.

You're right! As always your perspective is spot on and appreciated. I never would have given that perspective much thought, so I am glad you mentioned it. 😁

That's a tough one. I have always been quite fond of black and white, but I really like the purples that are coming across in that other photo. I am not sure I would be able to pick one if you forced me to!

lol. I won't force you then. You can choose both! 😆
I like them both as well. My favorite B&W shots are always the high contrast ones. They are hard to find, but I know they are out there waiting for me.. hehe.

I personally like black and white pictures Because it has its own pleasure of looking at the picture, everything looks clear. This santa and plant looks so beautiful. Keeping such plants in the house increases the beauty of the house a lot.

We love our house plants, even though they are a lot of work. They do tend to lift the spirit more so than plastic ones. lol. I always like a good black and white. Don't mind sepia colored shots either.
