Old city courtyards

DSC06198.jpg

Do you know what a well-yard is? This is when you look out of the window and see a blank wall or the same window opposite... right under my nose. I do not know what the architect's thoughts were, perhaps rooms with such windows or without windows served as utility rooms or there was another need (for example, to keep warm), but in St. Petersburg in the old part of the city such courtyards are not uncommon.

Today, after a long period of rains, the sun came out and we went for a walk in the center. Of course, I could not pass by such courtyards...

Some of them look pretty decent, they have been renovated and they are closed with bars. You can't just get into them. Sometimes there is even a guard booth and a guard.

But I am more interested in really old courtyards with traces of time and partial destruction.

There are corners that you won't get into right away. They can be found by chance and it is not a fact that you will find them next time. Therefore, I record everything with a camera for memory. Soon they will be repaired, and the Spirit of the time will leave them.

I hope that they will remain in my archives for a long time.

The angle of the first photo is wild. I like the linear angles and composition. I also like all these soft yellow, peach, orange hues in each photo.

In the last photo, not sure if it's my imagination, but the door looks small, two thirds of the height of the window directly above it, which seems to have the same width as the door. Odd, or maybe it's just me?

Glad you liked it))

If you just go into such a yard as a casual passerby, then you will not be too comfortable there. By modern standards, serious repairs and so on are required there. If you don't do post-processing of the photo, then the pictures won't attract attention either.

But these courtyards have their own charm of time. The past era is frozen in them and I love such places. As for the proportions of doors and windows... I didn't distort them, that's what they are in reality. Most likely, a high window is designed to illuminate the stairs in the absence of electricity. The second option... the door was higher and wider, and the ground level was lower.

Unfortunately, the door was locked... :))

They do have their own charm of time. Interesting how the past is frozen like you say.

The door caught my eye, looks like a door for very short people. I think I'd tend to go with your second option. There are many old buildings in the city I live in that have such features. One most notable right near me is accessed by going down stairs, but the size of the door is the same as the windows above ground. I was reminded of this when looking at that one photo.

You tried the door?! LOL!

I saw the lock on the door and it was definitely locked. If not from the outside, then from the inside. People don't like to be bothered by strangers :)

Hahaha, even without a lock, I wouldn't want to go in without permission. True enough, people don't like being bothered by strangers, haha, I'm no exception there.

Great work! For me, it is always inspiring to explore around the city with a camera. The same places might look different everytime..
