МТО-1000А test

photo_2023-04-02_20-37-00-2.jpg

I congratulated myself on starting testing my new monster. You can join, but it's better not to put rotten tomatoes in your pockets... yes, it didn't turn out the way I expected.

To begin with, I adjusted the position of the adapter so that the tripod mounting platform was strictly from the bottom, it's simple. Then I made a sealing gasket made of plastic (perhaps this is a mistake and the gasket should be metal). All that remained was to go outside. Unfortunately, it was beginning to get dark.

Why unfortunately? This lens has a constant aperture, it is not adjustable f/10.5 For evening shooting, it is not enough. But we have ISO...

So, a control shot with another lens to compare the approximation

I didn't go far, installed a tripod on the porch of the house and just started trying to get at least something.

The tripod, which I thought was reliable enough (for ordinary lenses it is), turned out to be a rather capricious lady. Unfortunately, there was a wind outside and every gust of it... reflected on the camera shake. So in this test, the possibilities of the lens are not fully disclosed. But I couldn't wait to see what would happen.

You have seen this sign in the general photo. I was never able to focus on it correctly. When the lens angle is only 2.5 degrees and the camera has even the slightest fluctuations... the object jumps wildly all over the viewfinder/monitor field...

The result is better here, I was lucky with the setup (conclusion, a lot depends on your hands ... everything)

Then I shot into the distance. Houses are barely visible on the horizon, do you see the red circle?

And now watch your hands... :)

And also for comparison

That's something like that.
In conclusion, I can say that despite ... hemorrhoids... I liked the lens. First we need to solve the problem with the tripod, I think that will be enough. And it's better to go hunting on a clear day :)

looks like you will need a steady tripod for that and something like 1/200 shutterspeed :)

nice mirror lens , i still trying to get a sony 500mm f8 A-mount one day :)

yesterday, a passerby, seeing my exercises, said that this lens should be placed on the stone fence of the bridge, pressed down with a brick and removed from the bridge along the river 🤣😂 😅

Yes, it seems that you will have to buy an extra strong tripod, mine is not designed for such a weight :)

When I bought this lens, I had a choice. Next to it lay a 500 mm mirrored miniscule of the same company. But his focus ring was too tight... And I took this one. Cannon is so cannon :-))

I'd even go further than @stresskiller suggest, I know from experience that when there is no lens optical stabilization, the shutter speed must be above the focal length. So, on 1000mm, I'd use 1/1250 :)
And that's on full frame sensor. For cropped, that would be more than 1250 * 1.5 (or 1.6 if on Canon).
So, this results in 1/2000 :)))
Of course, on tripod, the image stabilization must be switched off. Yeah, I wouldn't care much about the ISO when shooting with such monsters :)))
I'd definitely use the 10s shutter delay instead of the 2s, as with such big lens it needs more time to settle down and decrease the vibration oscillations caused by touching the camera+lens.

I think the results are great, considering the age of the lens ;)
Now looking forward for some wildlife captures and probably you will track the activities of the aliens on the bright side of the Moon :D :P

I agree, the shorter the exposure, the better the result. But a tripod assumes immobility. I will try to create completely stationary conditions. I may have to upgrade my tripod, maybe there will be two tripods at the same time... I will work on it :)

I don't use shutter delay. I have a remote control (remote control) to control the shutter when I use a tripod. The delay can be any time.

I will set the ISO to 100 (in any case, I will strive for this. But immobility is needed. I think that one lens mounting point is not enough for this monster.

My strongest tripod is about 3.5 kg and has no problems to hold steady my heaviest lens with my biggest camera, the total is about 4 kg.
Of course, the lens has a special tripod ring to balance the weight so I don't screw the tripod holder to the camera but to the lens instead ;)

This lens also has a tripod socket. Even two sockets for horizontal and vertical shooting.. But I really need a sturdy tripod. I'm already thinking about it :)

With such weight, it is a must, I'd say. Monopod an option too, I use mine from time to time, it reduced the vibration and is much easier to carry too.

Today I tested one device on a tripod for this lens. But at the same time I noticed a strange feature of the behavior of the camera itself.
I opened the window in the room and aimed at the far building. When I focused, I noticed that he seemed to be floating, then he was being guided, then he was slightly out of focus. I tried to turn off the internal stabilizer of the camera, tried to turn it on again... the result is the same.

Perhaps the gusts of wind from the window affected (I felt them), but there was no movement on the monitor, but the focus was floating...
It remains to try in complete silence or to look for some options in the camera, maybe something is turned on, which I do not know))

About the tripod. First I will try to change the tripod head to a denser one (this one has a small backlash). But maybe you still have to buy a powerful tripod for this lens)) It's not for running photography anyway. I arrived, got up and started hunting without leaving my place :-))

That's strange, I have no idea what the reason could be, probably you're right.
From my experience, though, when on tripod, the stabilization should always be off.
For the metallic tripods, I'd go with one that is heavier than the total weight of the camera+lens. ;)

I agree, according to the instructions, stabilization with a tripod is disabled. Otherwise, with complete immobility, the brains of the camera do not understand what is happening and begin to get excited))

But my tripod in combination with this monster did not provide complete immobility. It was more like shooting with your hands...
Most likely the focus swimming was the result of micro-movements/camera vibrations from the wind. They are invisible to the eye.
However, the picture on the monitor did not look like a shake, but as if the focusing system could not catch the focus and "floated". But the monster is purely manual, what the hell is the focusing system))
It remains for me to put the monster on the table, crush it with a brick and try again to compare the results))

Hahaha, that would be too extreme.
Probably it's just the tripod needs an extra weight to reduce/kill the vibrations?
I know a guy who has a solid bag that he fills with stones/dirt/sand for extra stabilization :D

Yes, there is a hook on my tripod at the bottom, on which you can hang a bag with stones/sand/water/... but I found that the tripod head itself is not as strong as I would like. At least you will have to change it.
