My First EV Road Trip Experience ⚡🚗

Hello everyone 👋

I recently made a big change in my life: I switched from a traditional petrol car to a fully electric vehicle—the MG4 EV. 🚗⚡

This decision came after realizing just how much I was spending on fuel. Every round trip between Tak and Phuket was costing me 8,000–9,000 THB in petrol alone. That's quite a heavy expense, especially now that I need to travel more frequently due to my mother’s age and recurring health issues.

There are times when I might need to make sudden long-distance trips, and while an EV sounds modern and eco-friendly, it has brought with it a steep learning curve. Since the day I made the switch, it feels like I’ve been learning something new every day—especially when it comes to planning and managing long road trips. 😅🔋

Not long after buying my new electric car, I had to take my mother and nieces on a trip to Chaiyaphum to make merit for our late ancestors—a story I already shared in my previous post. 💛🕊️

During that trip, I encountered one of the many real-world challenges of EV life in Thailand: charging app chaos. 😅 Unlike petrol stations, where one payment works everywhere, charging your EV here means downloading and topping up multiple different apps—each one linked to a different brand of charging station.

I had to preload money into nearly every app available, and unfortunately, some of them didn't work when I needed them most. One app crashed completely after I topped it up, leaving me with money stuck and no way to withdraw it. 💸

Among the apps I used, EleXPT is the one I rely on most often—though it’s not nearly as popular as the EV stations inside PTT petrol stations, which are much more widely used and often preferred by Thai drivers. 🔋📱

One of the biggest challenges during my trip to Chaiyaphum was simply finding a charging station. In the Northeastern region of Thailand, EV chargers are still quite rare and spread far apart—unlike in the North, Central, or Southern regions, where charging points are more frequent and accessible. 🔋🗺️

What made a huge difference during the journey was discovering an EV HUB station. These are specially designed charging spots that support electric vehicles more reliably, and every time I spotted one, I couldn’t help but feel a little spark of joy and relief! ⚡😄

EV HUBs are especially convenient because they integrate seamlessly with TrueMoney Wallet, allowing users to pay with just a few taps. That’s a big plus for EV drivers like me—since TrueMoney can also be used for paying bills, shopping at convenience stores, and more. 🧾📲

Honestly, when charging becomes this smooth, it feels like the EV lifestyle might really be worth the effort. 💚

My early days of driving an electric vehicle weren’t exactly smooth. One surprisingly tricky part? Unplugging the charging cable. 😅

It sounds simple enough—all you have to do is unlock the car, wait for the indicator light to flash, and then you can safely remove the cable. But for some reason, I kept getting it wrong. I was hesitant, unsure, and always a few seconds too slow. The system would lock up, and I couldn’t remove the charger properly. 🔌🚗

Looking back, it was such a small thing, but it felt like a big deal at the time. Luckily, as I continued using the car, I started picking up little tricks and building my confidence. With every trip, I’ve learned a bit more—and now, what once felt complicated has become second nature. 💪😊

Long-distance travel has slowly become something I actually enjoy, thanks to my EV. The drive is smooth and silent, with zero emissions and a suspension that hugs the road just right—making even high speeds feel fun and controlled. 💨🌱

Sure, charging takes time—almost an hour in most cases—but I don’t mind it at all. I now see it as a built-in break. Instead of rushing, I use that time to relax, sip on my favorite iced matcha green tea, and recharge myself before getting back on the road. 🍵🚘💚

During my road trips, I’ve made it a point to use a variety of charging stations. I try to avoid long queues or the hassle of booking through apps whenever possible. That mindset led me to try charging at an MG-branded station for the very first time. ⚡📍

It wasn’t exactly smooth—I had no idea how to start the process properly. 😅 So, I walked over and asked one of the MG staff members for help. Luckily, they were kind and incredibly helpful, walking me through every step and making sure I got it right.

It reminded me that while the EV journey has its bumps, there’s always someone willing to lend a hand. 🙌

While waiting for the car to finish charging, I was able to sit and relax in the MG service center’s lounge. 🛋️

It was quiet, comfortable, and air-conditioned—just the kind of place you want to be when the sun is blazing outside. It made the whole experience feel less like a chore and more like a well-deserved break. ☀️😌

On my way back home to Phuket, I had to stop and charge the car several times. As evening set in, the long drive began to catch up with me, and I started feeling physically drained. 😓🚘

I ended up choosing to rest for the night in Krabi. While waiting for the car to charge, I searched for a nearby place to stay and was lucky to find a spacious, comfortable room just a short distance from the charging station. 🏨⚡

The room was clean, quiet, and surprisingly affordable—everything I needed to feel refreshed and ready for the final stretch of the journey. 😌🛏️

The next morning, I hit the road early and continued my journey home. Along the way, I made a few charging stops, not just for the car—but for myself as well. ⚡🍃

I took time to stretch, breathe, and enjoy the quiet moments between destinations. These short breaks turned out to be just as important as the miles covered—they reminded me that long trips don’t always have to feel rushed. 🚗✨

Matcha green tea has truly been my ultimate travel companion. Whenever I started to feel tired or sluggish behind the wheel, a few sips were all it took to perk me up and keep me going. 🍃🚗💚

By the time I reached home in Phuket, I wasn’t just returning from a long trip—I was coming back with a whole new perspective. This first journey with my MG4 EV taught me more than just how to charge a car. It taught me patience, planning, and the value of slowing down to enjoy the ride. 🚗🌿

Was it perfect? Not at all. But every stop, every sip of matcha, and every little moment of confusion became part of a story I’m glad I lived. Driving an EV is not just about going green—it’s about learning to travel a little differently, to listen more, and to appreciate the quiet hum of the road. 💚🍵

To anyone considering the switch to an electric car: be ready for a few surprises, a bit of trial and error, and some deeply rewarding moments. It's a journey worth taking. ⚡🛣️

Thanks for reading, and see you in the next adventure! 😊
