George Orwell's route of Spanish civil war and a hidden Charterhouse in Monegros(Spain)[ENG-ESP]

(Edited)

Today I wanted to share with you two places located in Monegros (Aragon) in Spain, which we traveled on a motorcycle trip.

One of them is the so called "Orwell's route" and the other one is the "Charterhouse of Our Lady of the Fountains", a former monastery of the 18th century in the baroque style and the first of the three Carthusian monasteries in Aragon.

The British writer George Orwell (1903-1950), of whom much has been said lately because of the similarity of the novel 1984 and the restrictions imposed by our governments with the subject we already know, was also enlisted with the militias of the MUWP (Marxist Unification Workers Party), and was assigned to the Alcubierre Mountains in January 1937.

For three weeks he fought in Mount Pucero and later in this position of Mount Irazo, until February 16. Orwell wrote his testimony of his passage through these lands in his book "Homage to Catalonia", published in 1938. A book about the Spanish Civil War.

Thanks to Orwell's writings, it has been possible to recreate several scenarios of that time. Today you can visit three trenches (Orwell Route, the Three Huegas and Santa Quiteria position) and a bunker in Lanaja. We visited the trenches.

«It is curious but after the experiences I have lived through, I have not less but more faith than before in the honesty of human beings.»" (George Orwell's words in his book "Homage to Catalonia")

The narrow corridors and the living area or "bivouac". The bivouac was out of sight of the enemy, camouflaged with branches and other elements of the terrain. This is where they rested to eat and even had latrines right there. Surprisingly, it is a rather small and narrow place.

This was a light refugee, which served to be able to store ammunition or to rest themselves.

«Nothing was happening on that front either, and we only heard the occasional whistle of a shell and, very late in the afternoon, the whizzing of a Fascist mortar that pushed us towards the upper trench to see which hill the grenades were falling on. The enemy was there a little closer, three or four hundred meters away. The nearest position was right in front of ours, with a machine gun nest whose loopholes were an invitation to waste shells. The Fascists hardly bothered to fire with rifles, but sent relentless bursts of machine-gun fire against anyone who looked out". (George Orwell's words in his book "Homage to Catalonia")»

I recommend visiting this place, because although it is small, it transports you to another era in which sadly we were also at war. We returned to the road and headed to the Cartuja.

We went inside, and what most caught my attention were its religious fresco paintings.

They were painted by Fray Manuel Bayeu (1740-1809), brother of the painter Francisco Bayeu and brother-in-law of Goya.
It is worth a visit for the beauty of its exterior, the arid location, and the art inside.

All photos have been taken by me, with my Xiaomi phone, or by my companion on the trip @vonjerico with his Xiaomi phone too, who has given me permission to publish them. He also was the driver.

Thank you! Yes, that Charterhouse is in the middle of the Monegros desert. There is nothing else around. 😊

History and the past of a place will never stop surprising us with its mystery. Too bad very few such locations are well preserved and promoted further...

That's right. These places are almost completely unknown. Monegros is like a desert in Aragon, arid and without constructions so many people pass by these roads without knowing that here they can find these historical places. Besides, both are free and can be visited by oneself. That's why I thought it was necessary to talk about them, so that more people could know that they exist.😊

Muchas gracias!
