Pioneer in abstract art – Paintings with soul – Kandinsky 📷 Malaga – Spain

I felt immensely fortunate to be able to attend this magnificent and important art exhibition. Although I am not a fan of abstract art, I am discovering that certain aspects of abstract art do appeal to me, but only particular works, and going to this exhibition has fascinated me.

The Kandinsky art exhibition is located in the Pompidou Museum, on the city's seafront promenade and pier one, making it the most accessible museum for tourists, as it is their favourite place for walks, restaurants and leisure activities, as well as spending time on the city's most famous beach, La Malagueta. For this reason, it is a museum that is very popular with tourists. There are always excellent art exhibitions that are well worth seeing.

The exhibition is located in one of the two rooms dedicated to temporary exhibitions, so it is important to check the closing dates and not miss this marvel. Before entering, there is a large corridor where a timeline of this great artist's spectacular career is on display.

Upon entering the room, there was a large screen displaying many of Kandinsky's works in multimedia form. The large exhibition was very crowded with tourists, and from the languages I could recognise around me, there were many French and Russian visitors. It is well worth a visit and I highly recommend it. I don't think there are words to describe how well organised it was. The enormous space was divided into several smaller rooms, each with the appropriate lighting to protect the paintings and each with a different colour on the walls, creating a harmonious and warm atmosphere.

As is customary in this museum, there is always a lot of security, with people in charge of surveillance, but you can also ask them questions about the exhibition, and the walls are full of historical information and explanations. I think the most important thing is that there are three different languages.

Kandinsky has been one of the most prominent artists of the modern art era and is considered a pioneer of abstract art, although this has been much debated. His contribution to this type of art is significant and decisive. The museum has what is considered the most complete collection of the artist's works, all thanks to Kandinsky's widow. Thanks to these donations, all the paintings on display belong to the national Pompidou Centre for Modern Art.

This exhibition takes visitors on a journey through Kandinsky's entire career in the different countries he lived in: Russia, Germany and France. The exhibition is divided into sections from the artist's beginnings to the height of his art. It reminded me a lot of the history and career of Picasso, who went through several stages in his painting style.

The exhibition traces Kandinsky's history, his formative years, his departure from Russia, his studies in Germany, the founding of art schools, his personal life, his travels, and finally his arrival in Paris, where he produced several oil paintings using a palette knife during his training in this technique. It is a very interesting technique that I have seen with my own eyes, but I have never tried it myself until now.

The paintings in the first part of the tour are beautiful, traditional, oil paintings of landscapes, streets, cities, lakes, lots of nature, and you can appreciate the impasto created by the palette knife, as unlike a brush, it uses much more paint and the paintings have a very particular style.

Kandinsky painted a lot outdoors, which I think is a natural and beautiful source of inspiration, as if it gave his paintings spirituality. I really liked that in the works I was admiring. I liked knowing that he had a particular point of view on art, where he related the soul to art, which is how I see it too. Art without borders.

With Germany's declaration of war on Russia, Kandinsky returned to his country. He did not paint much during this period, but then he returned to figurative art and abstraction and began to focus on geometrisation with a very primary colour palette, but without abandoning the idea of spiritual values.

In 1922, Kandinsky was named master of forms and worked alongside other well-known artists. It was a period of great artistic production for him, with numerous works in both watercolour and oil painting. However, with Hitler's rise to power, the school he had founded was closed again and he went into exile in France.

Once again, when I was in this part of the tour, I remembered Picasso, who had his heyday in France. Kandinsky expanded his colour palette there and created a new style, as if the new air of this country had transformed something in him.

This new style fused geometry, fantasy and surrealism. The works I saw from this period are spectacular, from the colours he used to the shapes and even what the viewer can see when stepping back a little from the painting. I often say that it is when you step back that you really see what there is to see. His style became increasingly refined, although with the Second World War he had to change some of his materials.

I like this abstract art, and not only do I like it, it is much more than that: it has soul, it has meaning. They are not just four lines thrown together at random; these works have spirit, they have soul, and I think that is what I like most about them.

I think no one should miss something like this. It is unique and amazing. I didn't know much about Kandinsky's work, and I can assure you that now I love it. He was a painter who literally captured the soul on canvas.

When I left the room, there was a board with papers where people could write what they thought of the exhibition, and all the opinions were excellent.

Of course, the museum shop always sells items related to the exhibitions, and it's a lovely way to end a walk, tour and visit of excellence and quality. It's a high-quality exhibition, guaranteed.
