Moments captured by observant eyes.

Photography freezes moments in history or in life, rendering them static, so that we can return to them in the form of memories, and only observant eyes can capture their intrinsic humanity.

Last month, I was fortunate enough to attend a photography exhibition at the La Malagueta cultural center, located in the city's bullring. There are always interesting exhibitions, always about photography and most of the time in black and white.

The exhibition is fantastic and belongs to the German photographer Jürgen Schadeberg. During a long tour, I was able to appreciate his vision and his great talent for seeing human beings in a different way, in their daily lives, their activities, their history, and their customs.

It is impossible to bring everything I have seen and photographed into a single publication, as I tried to capture each of his works, everything his eyes have seen and appreciated.

This photographer fell in love with the southern coast of Spain, so much so that he stayed here until his last days, capturing the essence of Spain, which he loved, its humanity, its warmth, its way of being.

I think that's why I identified with him, because since I arrived, the joy and kindness of the people was something that attracted me, and he chose to live in the same place or very close to the place I chose.

20250608_160807.jpg

On the walls, during the tour, you can see phrases that Jürgen himself said, and they are in Spanish and English.

I liked the humanity, simplicity, and truth of this phrase, his goal, the goal he uses in his camera, his eyes. Without eyes, everything you see would not be possible. This reminded me of a friend who visits me often, also a great photographer, and I dare to tag him @jlinaresp, who told me that I might not have a camera, but I had the essence to be a photographer. I think he was referring to the eyes. Knowing how to see inside people, as Jürgen did.

20250608_155802.jpg

20250608_155809.jpg

I think it is worth looking at each photograph in detail, from the faces of the people, their gestures and postures, in their daily activities, their work, their family life, vacations, walks, meetings in cafes or bars. It is as if all these photographs could be used to make a film about a specific era, the 1970s.

Jürgen was able to capture Spanish traditions, such as bullfights, religious festivals, and even the leisure time of Andalusians on the beach. Of course, they weren't all Andalusians; many were tourists.

It was a time when, for example, many English people decided to come and live in this country, mainly because of the good weather, a stable and beautiful climate.

20250608_160105.jpg

20250608_160117.jpg

There were photographs of all kinds, whether everyday, street, or artistic photography, but as Jürgen rightly said, his goal was not a more or less good lens, but his eyes. That phrase, like many others, struck me because, as an artist and given the importance I attach to the eyes, I felt an important connection.

Jürgen could see beauty in everything, with every step he took surrounded by people, and in each of those people he saw the inside, and not only did he see it, but he captured it with his eyes and his camera.

Thank you very much for joining me today, I wish you a very good Sunday. See you soon.
Amonet.

All photographs are my own.

Aww 😀🙏... Thank you so much for tagging me in this fabulous photography art exhibition post!... I'm so proud to know you remember that moment when I told you that you have great potential, the absolute instinct that someone capable of capturing history in a scene must have... A round of applause for you and your talent, dear @avdesing friend, thank you for always sharing!...

P.S.: An anecdote: This post, the photos you show, immediately brought back memories of my father. My father was a great fan of bullfighting, and had even been an amateur bullfighter during his early youth in Caracas (Venezuela). Back then, when I was a child and even as a young man, my father used to take us to bullfights in Maracay, Caracas, and Valencia. He even rented a small bus, and my uncles, cousins, and my father's friends would go there too. Those were very family-oriented Sundays of bullfighting celebrations. But one day, something changed a lot in me, and when I was 24 or 25 I became a vegetarian and I never went back to a bullfight 🙂... My father stopped talking to me for months and even recommended to my wife that she divorce me! 🤣🤣🤣... That's how we were until thanks to my mother we started talking again 🙏... But even a couple of days before her death she told me with little strength left: "You should go back to eating meat and applauding bullfighters" 🤣 hahaha... Although by then she said it in a joking tone to annoy me!...

Interesting story... are you still a vegetarian?

I eat meat when necessary for protein, iron and collagen. But I prefer fruit and vegetables. I couldn't watch a bullfight, I would suffer with the animal... it's impossible for me. I love animals and nature.

I'm glad you finally reconciled with your father; it's very good for both of your souls. Thank you always!🤗

🙂 Yes, I've been a vegetarian for almost three decades. Well, actually, a lacto-vegetarian, since I eat yogurt and even butter from time to time!... It's a long story, because in the early 90s, it wasn't unusual for me to eat steak for breakfast!... 😂hahaha!... Greetings, dear and talented friend!

I've never had meat for breakfast, ha ha ha😂. People don't usually eat that for breakfast in Argentina. Well, milk has protein, so that's good! Thank you very much!🤗

Wonderful work. Those bullfighting arena shots are fantastic. With old photograph technology, this must've been quite the process. We have it so easy with cameras nowadays.

Hello @avdesing, I love the quote you highlighted in which Jürgen Schadeberg says that the lens he uses on his camera is his eyes. It's no surprise that this German liked Malaga in the 1970s (I guess that's when the photographs were taken). Everything is emotion, it's life. You can see it in the faces, many of them already wrinkled by age.

I love seeing so many people smoking... it reminds me of my two grandfathers smoking their cheap brand of black tobacco. I don't smoke, nor do I like the smell of tobacco, but I also don't like living in a world as clean and superficial as the one I live in. Where hypocrisy hides behind good manners.

I have really enjoyed this artist you have brought us. There was undoubtedly life in this country at one point.

Un abrazo muy grande.

I have never smoked and I don't like it, but I do like the smell of tobacco; it brings back memories... of my ancestors. I prefer that aroma to other modern ones, ha ha ha.

There are too many photographs and I want you all to see them. It's worth it, and to enjoy them better, I've divided them into stages... there will be more! Thank you very much!

As I mentioned, those photographs have also brought back memories for me. Furthermore, I am passionate about portrait photography and street scenes, and this photographer is very skilled at capturing the soul, as you mentioned.

Thank you for sharing... you do a great job with the presentations.

That was indeed a great answer, that he uses his eyes instead of specifying the camera. And you too have a good eye for the world around, indeed. 😉

Wao!

Those bullfighting photos always make me feel so sad. There's no doubt this photographer had great skill in capturing everyday life. His work could be considered part of the documentary genre. The camera is never more important than the way one sees, that much is certain. Thank you, Amonet, for this thoughtful post.

This photographer has some very interesting quotes that were written on all the walls of the place. I'll bring more. It was an impressive exhibition... the eyes are the most important thing. Thank you!
