Art in ancient advertising.

Art, the style of that art, the way imagination and creativity come to life to develop an idea are amazing, especially when we talk about a time when there weren't as many tools or technology as there are today, but rather it was hands that did most of the work and then help came from the printing press.

Primitive art, art made by human hands, is something I value greatly. Often, AI can generate unthinkable things, images that are super cool in a certain way, but art, images made by hand, painted by hand, have enormous value.

That kind of art takes time, knowledge, talent, imagination, and many other things. I read in a post the question of how long it takes to make a painting, to paint it by hand. My 30 x 40 cm paintings can take me about eight hours or more, depending on the degree of complexity of the face and the details. Imagine a large painting over two meters long and one meter high. Of course, painting human faces and bodies is not the same as painting a sunset landscape.

Today I bring you the second part of a forgotten art in this era of so many things done with AI, the art of advertising, especially that which was done 100 years ago, when it was necessary to publicize the films that were coming out. Graphic artists put all their knowledge into these beautiful posters. If you want to see the first part, I'll leave it here.

As I mentioned in that post, this exhibition was held to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of the actress who appears in these posters, Juanita Reina. Just look at the faces, the expressions the artists have given them, how they have perfectly captured this actress and her charisma.

But not only that, the film itself was advertised with different posters, so there were many designs for each one, and at that time many were painted by hand, or at least some parts of them. The cinema used this method to reach people, and thanks to great collectors of this art, they are still alive today to be shown to the public.

Some people will pass by an exhibition of this kind, but I really liked it, especially standing in front of these posters, some with wrinkles from the passage of time, and admiring the strokes, the prints, the typography, all of which is an art form that is no longer in use today.

This art, together with the art of cinema and music of that era, forms part of the history of Spain, a post-war history, where these forms provided a way to mentally escape from so much disaster, so much death, so much poverty, and to bring a smile or a little joy to people. I think about it and try to imagine those moments, when a little bit of joy was enough in the face of such painful moments of disaster.

20250724_181803.jpg20250724_181806.jpg

The exhibition consisted not only of posters, but also of photographs of the artist and a small area where her films were shown. Of course, it is very difficult to capture this in photographs, but I wanted to reflect it in some way so that you can see that the exhibition was very comprehensive.

20250724_181717.jpg20250724_181752.jpg

20250724_181735.jpg

There were also framed drawings, portraits made of this actress who was so famous in her time in Spain, and it is worth noting that she always or almost always appears with a beautiful smile, the kind that Spaniards needed at that time.

20250724_180936.jpg

Art, technique, imagination, and history often come together to create something great, like this exhibition, which surely touched the hearts of the Spaniards who saw it.

Thank you very much for joining me today. I wish you a very happy Sunday. See you soon.
Amonet.

What a beautiful art collection, @avdesing! From 1951—wow, some of the first primitive art pieces from the 50s. The famous Queen Juanita; here in Cuba 🇨🇺, there are pieces of Celia Cruz in some galleries I've visited on my trip.

It's always so lovely to visit them, my friend. Thank you for sharing this treasure. Greetings and happy Sunday!! 😊🤗👏

Hello Amonet

I didn't know it took you so long to create a piece; it must have been a great job making this type of poster back then.

I'm so lucky you visited this exhibition; you saw a beautiful collection of posters.

Your photographs are beautiful, as always.

Have a wonderful Sunday.

Good afternoon @avdesing, today I enjoyed two exhibitions for the price of one. I still had to see the first part in detail... I was on vacation.

The exhibition is tremendous. I love posters dedicated to cinema, and there were some very good poster artists here. It's a shame how little recognition these artists have received, although it seems that their talent and creations are now beginning to be recognized. The process of creating the poster was very complicated. The original painting was done in gouache on paper, and then the posters we see are lithographs.

Thank you very much for valuing this art and for sharing this wonderful exhibition.

A big hug.

You know more about this type of art than I do. I'll tag @erikah to tell her how these posters are made.

To me, they seem amazing for their time. It's an art form that, as you mention, is rarely seen today. Thank you!🤗

Hi @avdesing, I don't know that much... At the exhibition of Jano, another movie poster artist, in Madrid, I was so impressed that I searched the internet to find out how the posters were made. I remember that the technique was so complicated for Jano that he changed it... I've only mentioned the notes I remember... But it's all on the internet.

It's also an art/craft that I love. It's closely related to what downtown Madrid was like when I was a child. A Madrid where going to the movies was a luxury and large posters hung on the facades of buildings.

And thank you for bringing this exhibition here. Not only are you a great artist, but you also have the gift of recognizing the value of a work where others only see a movie poster.

Thanks again. 🤗

(Un poco largo? 🤔)

There is so much art, and some of it is so old, that I like to appreciate not only how it was made, but also how long it took to create, especially when everything today is done in such a hurry. I know how much work goes into a drawing, a painting, the technique, and as such I appreciate the work of artists who are often overlooked.

No comment is ever too long, and this one is very valuable. Thank you!🤗

Thank you for this post and for other things that I value more than art... Although perhaps life is also art, and you are a great artist.

I hope you have a lovely afternoon.

I don't know the actress, I don't think I've ever seen her on screen, but looks like she had an impressive career.

Having a close look at the posters, unbelievable how fake they look 😆 I suppose photoshop was called retouching and was used heavily.

My friend who accompanied me told me that it reminded her so much of when she went to the movies as a child and saw those posters... to think that the collector has more than 3,000 of them, and they are in such good condition. I had seen some at the city's museum of arts and customs, but not of a specific actress. The exhibition was great. Thank you very much!🤗

So much design skill from another time and place. I was mainly exposed to Hollywood classic cinema growing up, so it's fascinating to see vintage art from other countries.

It's my favorite poster because of the expression on the face, it's incredible. Thank you very much!!!🤗

I like these old posters, they are so innocent in their advertising. Now it is aggressive advertising that is going on so hard. I think of when I collected movie stars, little cards, many were painted.

I'm glad it brought back those beautiful memories for you. I didn't live through those times, but they are wonderful, a forgotten art that I'm glad to have brought back. Thank you!🤗

The only place I didn’t see her smile was in Vendaval... I love that you didn’t overlook this wonderful poster exhibition in tribute to Juanita. And how lovely—there was even a space to screen scenes from her films.

It was a great exhibition, and now it's over. There's another one on right now. There aren't enough days in the week! But this one was special because of the age of the posters and the beauty of how they were made. Thank you!🤗

It's fabulous. It was like the face was familiar and I couldn't figure it out if i already seen the female on screen something like that.
