Looking At Architecture: Wat Chamni Hatthakkan and Wat Sa Bua - Thailand

Hello everyone,
When talking about Thailand, the thing that becomes attention is culture and tradition. During my trip in Thailand, I got a lot of things from the culture, including how all people still maintain traditions very strongly. As I read in several articles, that almost all people in Thailand (95%) adhere to Theravada Buddhism. This is what makes this country have many temples or called Wat.

Just like in Indonesia, if in every corner of the city you will find various types of mosques, in Thailand, you will find many Buddhist temples, ranging from big to small. That is what makes Thailand a very exotic country with a culture and religion that can become one.

Speaking of Temples or Thai; Wat , the most amazing thing is the splendor of an architecture and building design, I have never seen a temple that is not magnificent in Thailand. One example, I found a small temple on the side of a major road in Bangkok. At that time, I found this shrine when I was about to return from Lumphini park. Located on Jalan Rama I, there are two temples that stand opposite each other.

I stopped at one of the bus stops and walked towards one of the temples. First, I visited Wat Chamni Hatthakan by crossing the pedestrian overpass. I also took a photo from the top of the bridge, because it looks really beautiful from where I'm standing. Even though this is a small temple, it turns out that if you realize that this temple also has large land and buildings. In fact, this temple is bigger than any mosque in the city where I live.

The first time I entered, I smelled the aroma of incense and several other aromatics being burned in a barrel made of large stones. Filled with sand and also the following offerings with some flowers. This temple has several parts, some of which are like a place for prayer surrounded by several statues, a crematorium and also a multi-purpose building.

First, we discuss a building with the most unique design in this temple. One of the areas that you will find 4 Buddha statues such as; god Brahma, god Vishnu and 2 other statues, this building has interesting accents like there are Chinese elements with colors dominated by red and white. I saw the door used looks thick with classic elements from old houses that are often found in East Asia (China).

Shifting a bit to the next building, I saw various golden Buddha statues standing around the building, this is the main building in this temple. Become a spotlight because this is where many people pray very solemnly. Around it are placed several red donation boxes and also several incense holders and candles used for prayers. There seems to be a stark difference between the two buildings in this shrine area.

Walking a little into the temple grounds, I found a row of drawers made of cement and ceramics for storage of cremation ashes. Beautified with paintings depicting heaven and hell which place several paintings of several gods. I understand a bit of the philosophy of this temple which is visited by various ethnic tribes like Indian, Chinese and Thai.

I then crossed the road to see another temple right in front of Wat Chamni Hatthakan, there is a temple that has a very different architecture from the temple I visited before. Wat Sa Bua, has architecture like temples in Thailand in general. This temple is a bit inside an alley, unlike Wat Chamni Hatthakan which is located right on a major road.

Having a large yard and a well-functioning school, this temple was unfortunately closed when I came there. But I can still see the grandeur of the building from the outside. There are several characteristics of Wat Sa Bua, such as this bell-shaped statue, lined with several statues that are installed with a photo of the king as a symbol. It seems very clear that this temple is specifically used by Thai citizens only. I can say that because it is very different from the previous temple where there is not a single picture of the king attached.

Wat Sa Bua, this temple is very magnificent with an attractive design typical of Thailand. The building, which was painted in white that had been covered in dust, looked like it was the color of cement. Several large windows with typical Thai sizes make this temple more elegant, sturdy and understated. Sturdy pillars that stand straight add a dashing impression to this temple building. The roof of the temple is arranged in 3 levels with accents like deer antlers. The same gold element used as the Grand Palace, Wat Arun and Wat Pho is also used in Wat Sa Bua.

Unfortunately I can't go inside like the other temples. Maybe because I came too late and it was enough to make me late. But at least I can find a small temple in the city of Bangkok which is rarely touched by tourists. So, is this really interesting? Comment below!

Oh yeah @aswita, when it comes to Buddhist temples, Thailand is filled with them! They're simply spectacular! They're not too far away from each other, and the cool fact about these sacred landmarks is the excellent opportunity to meet them up close and personal, thus adding to the visitor's convenience regardless of faith. 😊

What specific architectural details have intrigued you the most about these shrines and why?

I like the detail of the carvings on every corner of the roof, very different from the many carvings that exist, very Thai. I have never found these carvings anywhere other than Thailand, especially some temples that belong to the kingdom, very distinctive and thick with 'Thai'

Right, I love them too! They're quite distinctive as being authentic Thai architectural elements and would immediately catch one's attention. Looking forward to experiencing more of your design adventures there @aswita! 😊

There are also temples in our country that show some resemblance to the Buddhist architectural features of Thailand. I have seen from online articles that the roof shape and many other designs found in temples in Korea and Japan are also found in Thai shrines. The shape of the Buddha statues is very similar. But the shapes and carvings used for entrance doors, windows and doors have different characteristics.

Whoa, I just realized that, it's like cultures rolled into one. It's quite difficult for me to know the similarities between countries, because I see a lot of similarities but I'm not sure about them. Thank you for providing good information for me :)
