The historic center of Caracas is one of those places that, no matter how many times you have walked through it, is always pleasant to visit and wander around again.

For those visiting the city, walking through the bustling commercial and administrative heart of Caracas becomes almost a mandatory experience.

Although on weekdays it is a fairly crowded area, on Sundays the usual hustle and bustle of the center transforms into an unusual calm, reminiscent of the slow pace of old towns in the Venezuelan provinces, creating a quiet and open setting that invites you to observe the general atmosphere of the area more closely.

It is easy to get lost in the architecture surrounding the plaza, characterized by its iconic equestrian statue in honor of the Liberator, Simón Bolívar, and the old Caracas cathedral on its northwest corner.

However, most of the buildings around the plaza housing government institutions—do not date back to colonial times, but rather to the republican period of the late 19th century.

These are facades that speak of a Venezuela seeking to consolidate its identity after independence, with neoclassical lines and an air of solemnity that remains intact to this day.

The imprint of colonial architecture has not disappeared and still quietly coexists inside some buildings and houses in the center, in brick arches and mud walls, and almost unexpectedly, beneath the ground, where part of the old drainage system, designed in colonial times, remains intact and still functions today.

Walking through downtown Caracas on a Sunday has its advantages—despite the closed shops amid the absence of crowds and the palpable weight of history, the historic center and its structures stand out in high contrast.
