Sacred Museum of Caracas / Museo Sacro de Caracas

It had been a long time since the last time I visited the Sacred Museum, an important historical site located in the heart of Caracas, closely linked to the city's oldest history, from its foundation in the colonial period in the mid-16th century.

Among the extensive collection of Venezuelan religious art, I enjoyed a very interesting exhibition that explored the role of religious iconography as a means of promoting and solidifying Catholic evangelization in the American continent.

IMG_20240322_113137_022.jpg

Religious art is closely related to what would be considered "criollo" or Western-rooted art in our lands.

IMG_20240322_112143_259.jpg

It is noteworthy that it was not until well into the 17th century that certain schools of painting began to develop in the city of Caracas and other regions of the country.

IMG_20240322_112110_928.jpg

This was relatively late compared to other provinces of the former kingdom. Perhaps this is due to the harshness of the early colonization years, which left little room for the development of the arts.

IMG_20240322_112804_659.jpg

Religious iconography goes beyond pictorial representations in oil; it also includes sculpture and the craftsmanship involved in the creation of saints and accessories by Venezuelan artisans.

IMG_20240322_114128_727.jpg

During the exhibition tour, there was a notable effort to name and list the most prominent figures of Catholic religious imagery in Venezuelan lands, mainly from the 18th and 19th centuries.

Some jewels and parts of ceremonial attire worn by high-ranking ecclesiastical authorities are also displayed in this venue.

IMG_20240322_115258_719.jpg

It is worth mentioning that part of what is now the Sacred Museum used to be a cemetery attached to the Caracas Cathedral, where there are still some burials, and it is possible to visit one of its quite dark funerary crypts.

IMG_20240322_115028_548.jpg

To complete the atmosphere of the place, we could hear a church choir rehearsing live in the neighboring building from the crypts themselves, which made our visit truly immersive.

IMG_20240322_115229_273.jpg

The museum admission fee is $3, which is something I'm honestly not used to paying since most museums in Caracas are mostly public and free of charge.

IMG_20240322_113408_505.jpg

The good thing is that with the same ticket, it is also possible to visit the Archbishop's House, just a few meters away, which is part of the same tourist route and which I also hope to write about in the next post.

Museo Sacro
