Perspectives on Urban Space / Miradas sobre el espacio urbano

One of the things that attracts me most about photography is that it always allows having a temporal window to explore a space, its surroundings, its social movements, and its history, having the ability to generate, from the appreciation point of view, a constant interrogative dynamic of the realities circumscribed to a place.

That is why I find cities very attractive in this sense, since they are usually loaded with elements that are repeated in their corners and that are amalgamating the fundamental pieces that are shaping the multiple identities that inhabit in contemporary metropolises.

Then I think that urban photography represents an axis for collective memory and its layers of meaning, since in it certain internal and external dynamics framed in a documentary composition can be revealed.

An important point in my appreciation of photography has to do with the psychological aspects associated with the image, precisely that play between the subjective gaze of the photographer and the sensitivity and skill to capture the signs and symbols of the context that reflect part of the collective psychology.

I think street photography has that fine thread that debates between the spontaneity of the moment and the often random position of the photographer to capture an instant that provides some representative form and significance for the other who may be able to decode the various superficial and underlying messages that give strength to the image as a daily reflection of the city and the people who travel through it.

That narrative versatility is based on the visual expression of an image that can have multiple readings and that plays between that double channel of exploration between the personal gaze and the collective fact, bringing us closer to the debate on belonging to a place and the reflective reading we can make.

Miradas sobre el espacio urbano

Una de las cosas que más me atrae de la fotografía es que siempre permite tener una ventana temporal para explorar un espacio, su entorno, su movimiento social, y su historia, teniendo la capacidad de generar, desde el enfoque que se aprecie, una dinámica interrogativa constante de las realidades circunscritas a un lugar.

Es por eso que encuentro muy atractivas las ciudades en este sentido, ya que suelen estar cargadas de elementos que se repiten en sus rincones y que van amalgamando las piezas fundamentales que van conformando las múltiples identidades que habitan en las metrópolis contemporáneas.

Entonces creo que la fotografía urbana representa un eje para la memoria colectiva y sus capas de significado, ya que en ella se puede revelar ciertas dinámicas internas y externas enmarcadas en una composición documental.

Un punto importante en mi apreciación de la fotografía tiene que ver con los aspectos psicológicos asociados a la imagen, precisamente ese juego entre la mirada subjetiva del fotógrafo y la sensibilidad y pericia que tenga para captar los signos y símbolos del contexto que reflejan parte de la psicología colectiva.

Creo que la fotografía callejera tiene ese fino hilo que se debate entre la espontaneidad del momento y la posición a menudo azarosa del fotógrafo para captar un instante que aporte alguna forma representativa y de significación para el otro que puede ser capaz de decodificar los diversos mensajes superficiales y subyacentes que le dan fuerza a la imagen como reflejo cotidiano de la ciudad y las personas que la transitan.

Esa versatilidad narrativa está afincada en la expresión visual de una imagen que puede estar dotada de múltiples lecturas y que se juega entre ese doble canal de exploración entre la mirada personal y el hecho colectivo, acercándonos al debate de pertenencia sobre un lugar y la lectura reflexiva que podemos hacer.
