Nocturnal Chronicles: Bogotá / Noctambulario: Bogotá

Comparing this visit to last year's, I'd say it was shorter yet more work-intensive. My days were largely occupied, leaving me only those liminal hours to walk and rediscover the city—either in the quiet of early morning or deep into the night.

Si comparo esta visita con la del año pasado, diría que fue más breve pero más intensa en trabajo. Esto ocupaba buena parte del dia y me dejaba huecos para caminar y conocer y redescubrir siempre en las horas liminares: muy temprano en las mañanas o bien entrada la noche.

I noticed something different about the weather this time: for similar dates, the rain fell more persistently and the cold made itself known. My nighttime wanderings were never without their faithful companion—an umbrella, that unfamiliar object in Caracas where we'd rather avoid the rain altogether, only braving the downpour for urgent matters.

Noté algo distinto en el clima, para fechas similares, esta vez llovió con más insistencia y el frío se hizo presente. Mis paseos nocturnos nunca salían sin la compañía fiel de el paraguas, ese objeto que apenas reconozco en Caracas, donde la lluvia más bien se esquiva y solo los asuntos urgentes justifican desafiar el aguacero.

Bogotanos, on the other hand (and rightfully so), don't bat an eye at the water. A matter of geography and habit, I suppose.

Los bogotanos, en cambio (y con toda razón), no se inmutan ante el agua. Cuestión de geografía y costumbre, supongo.

Another striking detail: this is a city that parties energetically into the night yet rises without complaint at dawn.

Otro detalle que me sorprendió: es una ciudad que trasnocha con energía, pero que también madruga sin remilgos.

These photos were born from my nocturnal wanderings between Chorro de Quevedo, Chapinero's nightlife district, and the Corferias vicinity near my workplace. Each frame holds traces of that damp chill, those neon- and lantern-lit streets...
