Historic Center of Ciudad Bolivar / Centro Histórico de Ciudad Bolivar

It has been at least 10 years since the last time I visited the state of Bolivar, and the truth is that I had only been to Ciudad Bolivar once and it was just a brief visit. Therefore, my expectations were high because, being the capital of the state, I knew very little about it.

To provide some context, it is important to mention that the state of Bolivar is the largest on the map of Venezuela, and this is evident due to its monumental geography and the long distances between each town.

The state of Bolivar has an area comparable to that of mainland Italy, approximately 250,000 square kilometers, occupying a little over a quarter of the national territory. It takes almost 12 hours by road to cross it from north to south.

This city was of vital importance to the Spanish colony and its commercial presence in the region in the past.

Founded in 1764 as an important river port on the banks of the Orinoco River, Ciudad Bolivar is characterized by its ancient history, due to the intense pre-colonial indigenous activity in the area.

Its thriving economy is evidenced by its monumental colonial architecture, which is relatively well-preserved, standing out as one of the most beautiful historic centers I have visited in my country.

From the city center, you can see the great Orinoco River in the background. Historical references to Simón Bolívar's stay and the importance of this city in the independence struggle abound throughout the city. Therefore, there is a lot of the imagery that constitutes Venezuelan identity surrounding this city.

Unfortunately, I had very little time to explore the historic center, which, I confess, made me a bit anxious since I had to return to my work schedule afterwards. I tried to make the most of every minute to wander through its colorful and quiet streets that still retain a certain air of solemnity.

Centro Histórico de Ciudad Bolivar

Han pasado al menos 10 años desde la última vez que visité el estado Bolívar, y la verdad es que solo había estado en Ciudad Bolívar en una ocasión y había sido de paso. Por lo tanto, tenía las expectativas al máximo, ya que siendo la capital del estado, conocía muy poco sobre ella.

Para contextualizar, es importante mencionar que el estado Bolívar es el más grande del mapa de Venezuela, y esto se hace notar debido a su geografía monumental y las largas distancias entre cada poblado.

El estado Bolívar tiene una extensión comparable a la de Italia continental, aproximadamente 250.000 km² cuadrados, ocupando poco más de un cuarto del territorio nacional. Se necesitan casi 12 horas de carretera para cruzarlo de norte a sur.

Esta ciudad fue de vital importancia para la colonia española y su presencia comercial en la región en otros tiempos.

Fundada en 1764 como un importante puerto fluvial a orillas del río Orinoco, Ciudad Bolívar se caracteriza por su historia milenaria, debido a la intensa actividad indígena precolonial en la zona.

Su pujante economía quedó evidenciada en su monumental arquitectura colonial que se mantiene relativamente bien conservada, destacándose como uno de los centros históricos más hermosos que he visitado en mi país.

Desde el centro se puede ver en el fondo el gran río Orinoco. Las referencias históricas a la estadía de Simón Bolívar y la importancia de esta ciudad en la gesta independentista abundan por toda la ciudad. Por lo tanto, hay mucho del imaginario con el que se constituye la venezolanidad circundando esta ciudad.

Lamentablemente, tuve muy poco tiempo para recorrer el casco histórico, lo que confieso, me generó un poco de ansiedad, ya que luego debía incorporarme a mi pauta laboral. Traté de aprovechar cada minuto para curiosear entre sus coloridas y solitarias calles que aún guardan cierto aire de solemnidad.
