Cycling in the rain with a bumpy finish, Route: El Calvario / Ciclismo bajo la lluvia con final accidentado, Ruta: El Calvario

After almost two weeks without riding a bicycle, yesterday I decided to hit the road again and try to complete about 15 kilometers of distance.

I opted for a new and more challenging route, which included several inclines and slopes that I knew would be a challenge for both the bike's traction and my legs.

I started with the familiar route of Parque Los Caobos - UCV, and then joined Victoria Avenue, with a steep hill at the end that later becomes the busy Fuerzas Armadas Avenue. This road has a lot of commercial life during the week; in another era, numerous Italian immigrants settled in the area and opened businesses that still endure, such as certain restaurants, butchers, and traditional leather goods shops.

After traveling along these avenues, I returned to the heart of the city center, specifically to the La Hoyada area. There, I sought the end of Bolivar Avenue to connect to the bike lane that would take me straight to my return destination: Ezequiel Zamora Park, commonly known as El Calvario.

This park, built in the late 19th century by presidential order, is inspired by Parisian gardens and landscaping, which were very fashionable at that time among the Venezuelan political class. The complexity of symbols and elements that make it up is quite extensive, and it would be worth dedicating a special post to contextualize some of them. It is possible to interpret the political use of symbolism in our country through several of the images that accompany the route.

Upon reaching the top of the park, my ride was abruptly interrupted by nearly an hour of rain, which forced me to seek shelter and rest in a nearby café. The positive side was that I met a couple of cyclists whom I had crossed paths with along the way, and while waiting and relaxing, we discovered some mutual friends and various topics of interest and shared experiences despite our relative age differences.

Once the heaviest part of the downpour had passed, as the sky began to clear, I resumed the route back to my starting point, about 3 kilometers away, this time solely on the bike lane.

Although I was riding cautiously since the lane was still wet, and I don't have much experience in these conditions, I had a dramatic fall just 500 meters from the finish line.

At the only major intersection, as I slowed down a bit and tried to turn to take advantage of the green traffic light, my bike slipped, and I ended up hitting the ground, injuring my wrist and hitting my face on the pavement. Although the impact on my face was more striking at first, my wrist was indeed sore, so I will give it a few days of rest and observation, hoping for a speedy recovery.

You visited some nice places. I like the arch very much. Also nice you met some fellow cyclist during your stop.
I has been raining on and off for days here. If it will be a bit more dry I will also get on my bicycle again.

Hey! It's been raining here almost daily, but I decided to take the risk because it's still better to go on some long rides on the weekends, especially towards the downtown area. But I still got caught in the rain - probability got me!
