Cumaná, first impressions and HBD cryptopayments / Cumaná, primeras impresiones y criptopagos con HBD

Yesterday we were driving for about 7 hours from Caracas to Cumaná for pleasant work reasons.

Although I already know this eastern city, known as the firstborn of America for its 500 years of foundation, being the first colonial city on the American continental mainland, it had been more than a decade since I last visited it, so I still have high expectations.

In addition, I will be working at the International Book Fair, Sucre State chapter. So I hope to meet many interesting people related to the literature of the region.

We are staying in the historic center, in a guesthouse made in an old colonial house, so I will be very close to the fair location, which will be around this area of colonial architecture.

Another thing that catches my attention in this city is the massive adoption of the Hive community and the daily use of the cryptocurrency of our Blockchain as a form of payment in some establishments, something that I have been following through Hive but that I now hope to see with my own eyes.

Without a doubt, I would like to experience this if I have the opportunity, although in Caracas there are some places near my house where I usually pay with cryptocurrencies, they are not really "on chain" transactions since some businesses prefer to use USDT through Binance Pay as a payment gateway.

Despite the relatively high volume of cryptocurrency transactions in the country, many are more at the level of P2P transactions, off-chain, using centralized exchanges as intermediaries.

I have no objections to this, as I am a common user of some Binance services, and I myself use Binance P2P and Binance Pay quite frequently for my daily activities, such as ordering a taxi or ordering a pizza through a dedicated app.

However, as a "crypto forward" person that I am, I would always prefer to use on chain transactions. This makes the use case of HBD or Hive as an on chain payment form exceptional.

My biggest surprise was that just a few hours after arriving, I visited a bakery in a large and modern shopping center that had a green and eye-catching sticker that read "we accept HBD".

This surprised me a lot, because it's the first time I see the HBD emblem in a commercial establishment in all this time, so I immediately asked the cashier if it was possible to pay at that moment, to which she responded positively but unfortunately the person in charge of handling the wallet was not there at that time.

This only slightly frustrated my payment experience that I hope to fulfill before my return to Caracas this weekend, so I remain optimistic about that.

Cumaná, primeras impresiones y criptopagos

Ayer estuvimos rodando durante unas 7 horas desde Caracas hasta Cumaná por gratas razones laborales.

Aunque ya conozco esta ciudad oriental, conocida como la primogénita de América por sus 500 años de fundación, siendo la primera ciudad colonial en tierra continental americana, llevaba más de una década sin visitarla, así que aún tengo altas expectativas.

Además, voy a estar trabajando en la Feria Internacional del Libro, capítulo Estado Sucre. Así que espero conocer a mucha gente interesante, vinculada a las letras de la región.

Nos hospedamos en pleno casco histórico, en una posada hecha en una antigua casa colonial, así que estaré muy cerca del lugar de la feria que será alrededor de esta zona de arquitectura colonial.

Otra de las cosas que me llama la atención de esta ciudad es la masiva adopción de la comunidad Hive y el uso cotidiano de la criptomoneda de nuestra Blockchain como forma de pago en algunos establecimientos, algo que he venido siguiendo a través de Hive pero que ahora espero ver con mis propios ojos.

Sin duda, me gustaría experimentar esto si tengo la oportunidad, aunque en Caracas hay algunos sitios cercanos a mi casa donde suelo pagar con criptomonedas, realmente no son transacciones “on chain” ya que algunos comercios prefieren usar USDT a través de Binance Pay como pasarela de pago.

A pesar del relativo alto volumen de transacciones con criptomonedas en el país, muchas se dan más a nivel de transacciones P2P, fuera de cadena, usando los exchanges centralizados como intermediarios.

No tengo objeciones con esto, ya que soy usuario común de algunos servicios de Binance, y yo mismo uso con bastante frecuencia el Binance P2P y Binance Pay para mis actividades cotidianas, como pedir un taxi o ordenar una pizza por alguna app dedicada.

A pesar de eso, como un “crypto forward” que soy, siempre preferiría usar transacciones on chain. Lo que hace excepcional el caso de uso del HBD o Hive como forma de pago on chain.

Mi mayor sorpresa fue, que apenas unas horas después de haber llegado, visité una panadería en un amplio y moderno centro comercial que tenía una calcomanía verde y llamativa que decía "aceptamos HBD".

Esto me sorprendió muchísimo, porque es la primera vez que veo el emblema de HBD en un establecimiento comercial en todo este tiempo, así que inmediatamente pregunté a la cajera si era posible pagar en ese momento, a lo que me respondió de manera positiva pero que casualmente la persona encargada que manejaba la wallet no estaba en ese momento,

Lo cual solo frustró un poco mi experiencia de pago que espero cumplir antes de mi regreso a Caracas el fin de semana, así que sigo optimista en cuanto a eso.
