Bahareque

Bahareque houses are typical Venezuelan constructions that correspond to a large extent with the cultural heritage of the native peoples of the American continent, who for several millennia have used this technique to build homes in a relatively fast and resistant way and with an efficient use of resources. means.

Its basic structure is achieved by crisscrossing cane or reed branches or some type of wooden beams, integrated and molded with mud and other organic materials, which gives the structure a certain degree of plasticity, endowing it with anti-seismic qualities, which makes it in a very safe house in that sense, and perhaps for this reason, it is still possible to see centuries-old houses of this type, in good condition, with relative frequency, even in some cities of Venezuela.

It is a type of ecological construction that almost always uses organic materials typical of the area where they are built, and they are generally light and resistant buildings, very cool in hot areas and warm in mountainous areas.

The bahareque, as a construction technique, coexisted in the colonial period with other types of walls or brick constructions, and was also adapted in some cases, incorporating metal beams, iron mesh, cement, among other variations in various types of buildings.

Currently it is possible to see this type of construction, especially in rural areas, where the tradition of building with this ancient technique is still valid in some families.

I took these photos in Monte Carmelo, a small hamlet on the outskirts of Sanare, in the mountainous area of Lara state, which begins to form part of the Venezuelan Andean mountain range.

Las casas bahareque son construcciones típicas venezolanas que tienen correspondencia en gran medida con la herencia cultural de los pueblos originarios del continente americano, quienes durante varios milenios han utilizado esta técnica para edificar hogares de una manera relativamente rápida y resistente y con un uso eficiente de los recursos.

Su estructura básica se logra entrecruzando ramas de caña o juncos o algún tipo de vigas de madera, integradas y moldeadas con barro y otros materiales orgánicos, lo que le da cierto grado de plasticidad a la estructura, dotándola de cualidades antisísmicas, lo cual la convierte en una vivienda muy segura en ese sentido, y quizás por eso, aún es posible ver con relativa frecuencia casas centenarias de este tipo, en buen estado, incluso en algunas ciudades de Venezuela.

Es un tipo de construcción ecológica que casi siempre utiliza materiales orgánicos propios de la zona donde se construyen, y por lo general son edificaciones ligeras y resistente, muy frescas en zonas calientes y cálidas en zonas montañosas

El bahareque, como técnica constructiva, convivió en el período colonial con otro tipo de construcciones de tapias o ladrillos, y además se adaptó en algunos casos, incorporando vigas de metal, mallas de hierro, cemento, entre otras variaciones en varios tipos de edificaciones.

En actualidad es posible ver este tipo de construcciones, sobre todo en zonas rurales, donde además sigue vigente en algunas familias, la tradición de construir con esta antigua técnica.
